Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@harriethoyle yes me! 2nd FD this week. Next week I will be on holiday and not fasting so will probably have some damage control to do after.

And congrats for reaching your 70 kg target, that's amazing! Grin

harriethoyle · 07/04/2022 08:39

Thanks @EatYourFive 😁 this thread has been instrumental in keeping me going! 70.2kg this morning so I should shave a bit more off overnight 🤞🤞🤞

Great work @harriethoyle! What was your starting weight again? I am hoping to reach the magical 60 kg limit (I'm quite short) over the next month. Think it is achievable unless I really undo all my hard work during my holiday next week! Will try my best not to, at least there should be much less focus on eating in comparison to the Christmas break which saw me put on 3.5 kg..

harriethoyle · 07/04/2022 13:37

I was 77.1kg in Oct 2020 @EatYourFive when I started properly sticking to 5:2 every week as opposed to just doing it when I felt too fat! 😂 at that stage I was a size 14-16. Am now a size 10-12, erring towards a 10 and intending to maintain just by keeping 2 FD a week in my life. I'll do 3 a week before and after holidays I think but I can't see any reason this WOL won't work for me for the rest of my natural days Smile

By the sound of it I am similar to you @EatYourFive in that I put on weight amazingly easily 😂🙈 doesn't come off aa easily though!

@harriethoyle it is so encouraging to see sone results! I weighed around 71 kg (on a good day!) a year ago, lost a bit with 5:2 but then stopped doing it in July and regained it all. My final wakeup call was when I renewed my passport photo in November and my cheeks were so much wider than in the old passport that I just had to do something about it! Grin
I bought some size 10 jeans this week, feels great to be able to wear smaller sizes again doesn't it!

EatYourFive · 07/04/2022 19:06

Kitchen closing at 650 tonight.

harriethoyle · 07/04/2022 20:02

Kitchen closing here at 550. Man, today has been HUNGRY 😂🙈

absolutelyknackeredcow · 07/04/2022 20:35

I was fasting - managed at 480 cal day.
It's not easy when the kids are around though 😁

EatYourFive · 07/04/2022 21:09

Oh wow well done you both! I had lots of junk today (snacks) and no proper meals, not the best way to fast but there you go, it's been a stressful day so I'm just glad I managed to get through it.

harriethoyle · 07/04/2022 21:15

I would really struggle if I wasn't just feeding myself @absolutelyknackeredcow... There's much less temptation flying solo!

Signing in! Ideally for a b2b but let’s see how today goes. I’ve been up for hours (boo) but am off for a gardening course this morning which should keep my hands busy and mind off food.

harriethoyle · 10/04/2022 21:39

Anyone with me tomorrow? Weekend has been SO indulgent so I've got a lot of pre-Easter reining in to do...

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/04/2022 08:37

Joining for a b2b. Singles do not work for me at all so actually really looking forward to it

harriethoyle · 11/04/2022 08:50

Do you feel back in the groove @absolutelyknackeredcow? I find singles SO much harder than b2b..!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/04/2022 09:59

I have felt very frustrated that I haven't been able to do them. Main thing with singles is I don't get significant drop from them. So fast, slightly lighter and then eat again and it just goes back on. With a b2b is much more of a drop

incognitodorrito · 11/04/2022 10:30

I’m on it today after a few madly indulgent days in Paris, too scared to go on the scales and feel super bloated so really need some damage control..

harriethoyle · 11/04/2022 10:52

Yep agreed @absolutelyknackeredcow - that's EXACTLY how I feel. All the pain, none of the gain (well, loss!)

@incognitodorrito how wildly glamorous, I love it! Definitely worth a few days of self-control on your return

OP posts:
TheWayTheLightFalls · 11/04/2022 16:22

I didn’t b2b in the end today but carried through the Sunday fast ‘til 11.30am or so. Back on it tomorrow.

Nearly there Monday crew!

KylieKoKo · 11/04/2022 16:42

I am back from holiday but have injured my leg so will not be fasting while it heals because I am already miserable enough about it. Hopefully will be back next week!

incognitodorrito · 11/04/2022 17:20

Get well soon @KylieKoKo and hope you managed to enjoy some of your holidays.

Thank you @harriethoyle - I’d forgotten how beautiful Paris is, I’ve caught the travel bug and want to see as much of Europe again as possible !

KylieKoKo · 11/04/2022 17:26

Thanks @incognitodorrito I hurt it on the way home so it could have been worse. I am just feeling sorry for myself and have convinced myself I need calories for recovery Grin

harriethoyle · 11/04/2022 18:39

Oh no @KylieKoKo - what happened?!

Just waiting for tea to cook in the oven... should come in at c.582 cals.

Kitchen closed at 602, oh so hungry !

incognitodorrito · 12/04/2022 07:34

2nd day of B2B today. Anyone else joining ? Woke up feeling a lot less bloated than yesterday so that’s given me lots of enthusiasm to power through today.
