Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Nice to see you are back @absolutelyknackeredcow! Sorry to hear you also had a nasty case of covid. I also had it really bad but ongoing nausea and loss of appetite have prevented me from putting on much weight. Still not fully recovered but will try and do a small 800 kcal fast today and see how I get on.

Good luck today everyone!

sweetgingercat · 28/03/2022 14:43

Welcome back to the Monday fast @EatYourFive and @absolutelyknackeredcow, we've missed you both and I'm glad you are beginning to turn the corner.

I'm getting on okay here, since I've discovered pickled cabbage and kimchi. They make salad much more exciting!

harriethoyle · 28/03/2022 18:13

Kitchen closing here on 745. Bit higher than I would have liked but frankly delighted to have stuck with it!

Kitchen closed at 589. Always find Mondays (the first day) so hard! Well done Monday fasters!!!

incognitodorrito · 28/03/2022 19:54

Closed at 615 - think I may go to bed early to avoid the roast chicken in the fridge..

Beautiful3 · 28/03/2022 19:56

Going to do a back to back tomorrow, anyone fasting tomorrow?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 28/03/2022 20:14

Thanks @sweetgingercat ! I missed you all and would have loved to avoid the Covid. Kitchen closed on 510. Happy with that Smile
TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/03/2022 20:18

I’m back from hols and with you tomorrow @Beautiful3. Had an early supper today to kickstart things.

sweetgingercat · 28/03/2022 20:57

Well done everyone! I haven't finished yet (as I'm a naughty late supper eater).

But I am particularly proud of the fact that I marzipanned a cake today and didn't eat ANY of the marzipan. That's never ever happened in my life before!

I'm with you tomorrow @Beautiful3 and @TheWayTheLightFalls and anyone else joining too. Tuesday is always easier than Monday isn't it!

See you tomorrow

EatYourFive · 28/03/2022 21:35

Thanks @sweetgingercat, it's good to be back. Kitchen closed at 650, happy with that. Will try and do another FD later on this week but won't be doing b2b yet, hopefully next week.

KylieKoKo · 28/03/2022 21:39

I just finished up on about 500 calories. I'm going to do a b2b as it's that or weekend fasting which is out of the question. I'm going on holiday on Tuesday next week so I'll probably just do a fast day on the Monday and get back to 2 a week the week after.

harriethoyle · 28/03/2022 22:16

@Beautiful3 @TheWayTheLightFalls @sweetgingercat I'm joining you all tomorrow!

Good morning b2bers, fasters and NFDers!

My kitchen closed (late) last night at 622. I always add a brown pita bread on a B2B and it keeps the hunger at bay nicely.

What is everyone having for 'breakfast' on a fast day? I usually don't eat this early in the morning, but my go-to breakfast at the moment is an egg with pickled cabbage and miso. Before 5:2 I could never have imagined having this odd combination! Some variety might spice things up a bit more though!

harriethoyle · 29/03/2022 08:37

I just have black coffee @sweetgingercat. I find breakfast makes me hungrier and I begrudge wasting the calories!

Tuna thin for lunch, fishcake and stir fry veg for tea tonight. Feeling strong!

Beautiful3 · 29/03/2022 08:54

@sweetgingercat I save my calories for dinner. That way i can have a pretty normal dinner with the family. I hate having 3 tiny meals.

KylieKoKo · 29/03/2022 10:21

I am on day 2 of a b2b today.
Good luck fellow fasters.
@sweetgingercat I don't eat til as late as possible on fast days so don't have breakfast. I normally have a miso soup with some salad mid afternoon.

harriethoyle · 29/03/2022 13:16

My tummy was runbling SO loudly at work I was frightened everyone else in the room would hear it... from about 10.30am!! Managed to hold out til 1.10pm for lunch which I have wolfed down like a snake swallowing a goat...!

OP posts:
Beautiful3 · 29/03/2022 17:53

@harriethoyle haha I've been starving today too. Ended up eating too much! Feels pre menstrual. Kitchen's closed at 732. Going to try another fast tomorrow.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/03/2022 19:48

Not the easiest FD today as the fridge was almost entirely empty after our hols… which should be great for a fast but really wasn’t Grin. Let’s see!

sweetgingercat · 29/03/2022 19:50

I have also found today really, really hard. That's partly because I was driving almost all day and didn't dare drink anything because I couldn't find anywhere to stop to have a wee! Eventually I ate a box of grapes and I'm still starving, but I've got hardly any calories left to play with Sad ...

sweetgingercat · 29/03/2022 19:51

Kylie Ko Ko, miso soup and salad is a favourite in this house too!

harriethoyle · 29/03/2022 22:00

Just think of tomorrow's breakfast, gang! I'm having toasted veda...

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 29/03/2022 22:59

I'm all done. Slightly peckish but I have hot cross buns for breakfast tomorrow so I'm thinking of that! Hopefully I'll have lost some weight in tomorrow's weigh in and this won't have been all for nothing.

EatYourFive · 30/03/2022 06:59

Anyone else fasting today? I might try and do another

harriethoyle · 30/03/2022 07:23

Slightly disappointing loss in that I'm now 1.4kg above TW and can't do another FD this week to get a bit closer but I can do 3 next week. Basically I've realised that 2 FD maintain my weight and 3 I lose. So I'll have to keep plugging away to get under 70kg!
