Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Gah, harriet. Never mind, plan for next week.

Weighed this morning and am up a little bit, 1.5kg, which after a long and sometimes indulgent holiday is fine by me. Aiming to hold out until 1/2pm today since I'm at work and busy, then will break fast.

Good luck any Weds fasters!

KylieKoKo · 30/03/2022 08:42

1.2 pounds down from after my fast day last week. I'm absolutely ravenous after my b2b thorough.

Beautiful3 · 30/03/2022 09:40

@EatYourFive I'm fasting again today. Yesterday's didn't go as well as I ended up in the 700s!

EatYourFive · 30/03/2022 10:12

Yay @Beautiful3 we can do this! What are you aiming for today? I'm trying to dave most of my calories for tonight and have a decent dinner.

Beautiful3 · 30/03/2022 12:51

@EatYourFive -Same here. I'm not eating until dinner time. Most looking forward to pasta with salad!

My friend said she'd join me this week, as her doctor reccomended it for her diabetes! But she can't seem to crack it, just yet. My will powers quite good, most weeks (apart from the week before a period!) Do we have any advice for a beginner? Could she do 800 calories a fast day instead, to start her off?

EatYourFive · 30/03/2022 13:56

I will make a healthy gousto meal for the family tonight and have a smaller portion myself. My appetite still isn't quite back to normal so fasting hasn't been too hard so far, guess that's something positive to come out of covid!!

No advice for a beginner but I remember it was really hard to start with and I kept getting headaches and feeling dizzy. Guess she could try and drink lots of sparkling water and make sure she includes plenty of protein in her meals. And keep telling her to persevere as it does get easier! And miso soups of course are great!

Beautiful3 · 30/03/2022 18:53

Thanks @EatYourFive some good advice, I'll pass it on. Good tip regarding the sparkling water, think I'll try that too. 3 back to backs completed. Kitchen closed at 523. Looking forward to my warm weetabix in the morning, like you wouldn't believe!

EatYourFive · 30/03/2022 19:38

Oh wow @beautiful3 that's amazing well done! Not sure I could manage 3 days b2b!
Kitchen closing at 650 here, I'm happy with that as it's my first week back after covid. Hopefully next week will be able tondo b2b again.
Gonna now go and put the ingredients in the breadmaker, can't wait to wake up to the the smell of freshly baked bread tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 31/03/2022 08:15

I'm going to do another FD today and skip planned lunch out... anyone with me?

I’m away for the next week and a half so will not be fasting until I come back. I started fasting back in December with this break in mind and feel really good, having stuck at it, lost weight, cracked the whole hunger carb thing and feel much better with my body already, even though I still have a long way to go… thank you for all your support and help and being great faster friends! I’ll be back! And good luck next week!

@Beautiful3 When I started, I would do one fast day over two days, so start on Monday afternoon for example and finish at Tuesday at the same time. Then I’d gradually build up, one day the first week then tmwo the next and after a couple of weeks revert to whole day fasting… I found that much easier…

Beautiful3 · 31/03/2022 09:57

@EatYourFive I hope you're enjoying your freshly baked bread today! @sweetgingercat that's actually a really good idea! Thanks, I'll let my friend know. I've had my 3 weetabix this morning! Looking forward to pizza tonight!

harriethoyle · 31/03/2022 11:44

@sweetgingercat have a great break!

Kitchen closing here on 582 after my impromptu FD. Please be kind tomorrow, scales!

Another 0.6kg off to leave me 800g above target...AGAIN 😂 3 x FD next week to see if I can crack this!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 01/04/2022 09:31

@harriethoyle so frustrating isn't it.
I have put on all the weight I loss since January when I got covid.
So another 5lbs to lose before my hols at the end of May. Doing a Friday fast which I hate

harriethoyle · 01/04/2022 09:43

Friday fasts are heroic @absolutelyknackeredcow! Hopefully your gain will be lost as quickly as it came on...

600g is nothing @harriethoyle

Will you move to 6:1 once you get to your target weight?

I am going on holiday next week so no fasting for me!

harriethoyle · 01/04/2022 13:37

I know @KylieKoKo but I am just so BORED of gaining and losing the same 1.5kg each week! I think I will stick to 5:2 when I'm at target because I maintain on 2 and lose on 3 and don't have to think at all about what I eat at the weekends. If I did 6:1 I think I'd have to be more restricted NFD and that doesn't work for me...

Morning, signing in for a Sunday FD here. Not hugely organised in terms of food so I expect it’ll just be versions of what my family is eating but with much more veg and no carbs. Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine!

incognitodorrito · 04/04/2022 06:53

Morning ! FD here today, won’t be B2Bing as taking my little one to Paris tomorrow to celebrate her 12th birthday for a few days. Back Friday night so might make Saturday a FD. Good luck fellow Monday fasters !

EatYourFive · 04/04/2022 08:25

Good morning, I'm also fasting today but not sure yet if I do B2B, still not fully recovered from covid. Will just see how I feel.
Good luck today!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/04/2022 09:13

Very impressed by @TheWayTheLightFalls Sunday fast!

I'm. Just. so. Heavy

Covid and TOTM has just done something to my control and I can't stop eating. Have gained half a stone since before Covid.
Singles don't work for me at all but because of work dinners they are the only thing I can do this week.
Hoping to be able to b2b next week and have promised to get my non fast days under control too

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/04/2022 09:15

Fasting today though

harriethoyle · 04/04/2022 12:18

Hi gang, signing in for my b2b and another FD planned for Thursday. @absolutelyknackeredcow try tracking on NFD on something like my fitness pal... might make you feel more accountable? Or do an IF on a work dinner day to limit the damage... you've got this!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/04/2022 16:34

Yes I need to get back to tracking food ok NFD. I use my fit bit and found the pattern of 2 FDs, 2 tracked days and 3 free days was enough to lose. It's just so boring though
