Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

It’s been a carb loaded day for me @harriethoyle so I’m going to be doing penance tomorrow with you!

Beautiful3 · 23/03/2022 18:46

3rd back to back today. Kitchen closed at 624.

KylieKoKo · 23/03/2022 19:19

Today has been fairly easy @harriethoyle

I just had some salmon and veg and will have enough calories left for a boiled egg and some babybel cheese later if I need it.

I am looking forward to tomorrow as I'm in the office and we will probably go for lunch somewhere.

KylieKoKo · 24/03/2022 08:42

1.8 lbs down from this time last week!

Hang in there @harriethoyle. I don't think I could hack 2 fast days.

harriethoyle · 24/03/2022 09:29

@KylieKoKo this is my third of the week but I am bl**dy desperate to FINALLY be under 70kg. My London jaunt put paid to that this week because I had to get my bloat weight off but if I crack down today and then the same next week and don't go too crazy this weeked I might get there?! It's so close I can almost touch it...!

sweetgingercat · 24/03/2022 11:48

@harriethoyle… I’m here with you… we can do it together! It’s sunny here, think of yourself on the beach this summer at 70k! You’ll look amazing!

harriethoyle · 24/03/2022 16:16

How are you getting on @sweetgingercat? I've got dog sitters arriving tonight so I'm starting to fret they might to use MY oven when I want to cook my fishcake 😂🙈

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 24/03/2022 16:40

@harriethoyle… I’ve been driving in my car virtually the whole day so haven’t had a chance to eat anything except a boiled egg and some pickled cabbage and miso! I’m glad it’s going well for you… keep those dog sitters away from your fish cake!

harriethoyle · 24/03/2022 20:37

😂😂 no housesitters have been harmed on this FD! Kitchen closing on 629, a tiny bit high but I had stir fry veg to use up so I had that rather than broccoli...

sweetgingercat · 24/03/2022 23:07

Well done @harriethoyle… kitchen closed here on 520… glad your fishcake went unscathed!

emmsyg · 25/03/2022 09:18

So today I weighed in at 12st 9lb!!! That's a full stone off so I am over the moon. There's a long way to go until my initial goal of 10st 7, but I'm really pleased that sticking with this is having results. Like most others, I don't do breakfast or lunch on a fast day, I just drink loads of water. I've found that once I eat, I'm then hungry so if I can put it off as long as possible then it's easier.

My husband doesnt fast, so for dinner I'll quite often have something with salad or veg that he can have with potato, so fishcakes, salmon, fish fillet, chicken breast in tomato based sauce. Fritatas, shakshuka and tomato sauce based curries where I can swap the rice for cauli rice also work well. On a lazy day a ready meal or half a pizza that comes in at 500kcal or under works too! I haven't bothered counting my milk calories in tea/coffee since starting - I only have a splash of milk in two cups a day so I'm not going to beat myself up over it when it's working.

harriethoyle · 25/03/2022 09:34

That's brilliant @emmsyg! Well done! Grin

@emmsyg wow that's fabulous, well done!

emmsyg · 25/03/2022 21:46

Thanks everyone!

harriethoyle · 27/03/2022 16:44

Who's with me tomorrow? I'm doing the usual b2b. Relatively sedate weekend so am hoping I haven't done too much damage!

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 27/03/2022 18:09

I'll be fasting tomorrow too.

Beautiful3 · 27/03/2022 18:43

I'm fasting tomorrow. I need the reset as I've eaten far too many chocolates today!

sweetgingercat · 27/03/2022 21:51

Count me in… I’ve stupidly eaten bread mostly all this weekend!

incognitodorrito · 27/03/2022 22:12

I’m in - have been a little too half-hearted during my last B2B and ate too much last week. I can see a difference from all the hard work I’ve put in and I’m rewarding myself with food … time to press the reset button.

harriethoyle · 28/03/2022 08:39

I'm already starving, I've forgotten my coat and I've forgotten my packed lunch. Happy Monday!

Morning all
Going to my first single fast after my really nasty bout with Covid. Still feeling exhausted but also fat and bloated so will see how I get on.
Seem to have put on about 4lbs which is not good news as I wasn't active (obvs ).going to take it slow in the next couple of weeks
