Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Sorry you’re still feeling rubbish @EatYourFive… hope you get to feel a bit better during the day!

harriethoyle · 21/03/2022 09:15

It was amazing @sweetgingercat although now I am poor and 3kg above my target weight rather than 1kg Grin

B2B FDs for me too - good luck everyone !

KylieKoKo · 21/03/2022 14:10

I'm also fasting today.

I hope you feel better soon @EatYourFive. I wouldn't fast if I were you. You need energy to recover.

KylieKoKo · 21/03/2022 14:11

@harriethoyle it will come off really quickly. It will mostly be water from increased salt and carbs!

emmsyg · 21/03/2022 15:36

Well I had a piss poor week last week and only did one fast day so am back on the wagon today after a 1lb gain! Was travelling with work and when I got back had an afternoon tea in the lovely Culloden Hotel Belfast booked with my sister in law before her baby arrives next week so it was (kind of) worth it.

Have a nice M&S stir fry meal for dinner tonight and I'm ready for it!

Beautiful3 · 21/03/2022 17:26

Kitchen closed at 583. Hope you feel better soon @EatYourFive. Snap @sweetgingercat, that's exactly how I feel! Honestly don't know why I feel this way?! I've made more of an effort today. After my dog walk, I did my hair, put on nicer clothes and put some make up on. It made me feel a little bit better. Hope this phase passes! I had a good look in the mirror and even though I'm back to a size 10 and i look OK, I don't look great. My stomach still looks plump and squishy after baby number 2. Still feeling like I have a long way to go! I'd like to be an 8 again. Think that would make the world of difference. Going to try a back to back tomorrow. @harriethoyle ooh sounds like you had a fabulous weekend. Well done Monday fasters.

incognitodorrito · 21/03/2022 18:04

kitchen closed on 552 today here. Well done Monday fasters, see you all tomorrow!

EatYourFive · 22/03/2022 10:14

Thanks @sweetgingercat, @KylieKoKo and @Beautiful3!
I didn't fast in the end, still feeling too weak for it. Think I am on the mend now though so hopefully can join you again next week. My appetite hasn't been great so have managed not put on weight even though haven't been able to fast or exercise. Something good I guess!

Good luck today fasters!

KylieKoKo · 22/03/2022 10:28

Does anyone else find they sometimes wake up feeling a bit hungover after fast days? I am guess it dehydration because I haven't got as much water as I usually would have done from food.

harriethoyle · 22/03/2022 13:50

harriethoyle · 22/03/2022 13:53

Yes @KylieKoKo I do. A bit headachy? I definitely think it's dehydration.
1kg off overnight so you were right Kylie my 2kg gain was just bloating in the main! I'm busy today so this FD is racing by... hope everyone else is holding firm!

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 22/03/2022 16:30

@harriethoyle headachy and slightly nauseous. Pretty much the same feeling as having had cheap bottle of white wine. Water, coffee and breakfast sorted me out though.

I am fasting tomorrow. I am having a small piece of wild salmon with veggies for my main evening meal and I will be using the rest of my calories on a boiled egg, some baby bel cheese, nectarines and miso soup. Is anyone else fasting tomorrow?

harriethoyle · 22/03/2022 16:35

I'm back with a Thursday FD this week I think to undo the last of the weekend damage 😂

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 22/03/2022 16:39

Yes @KylieKoKo I also feel a little dehydrated in the morning on a second day… if it’s bad I take a little bit of lime with salt in hot water…

Beautiful3 · 22/03/2022 18:44

2nd day of a back to back. Kitchen closed at 545. Fingers crossed for a 3rd tomorrow.

Beautiful3 · 22/03/2022 18:46

@KylieKoKo I used to get headaches alot. Now I drink more water and make sure I get some sea salt. It definitely helps.

harriethoyle · 22/03/2022 18:51

Kitchen closed on 582. Looking forward to non FD tomorrow!

sweetgingercat · 22/03/2022 23:27

Kitchen closing on 689 here… I was quite hungry tonight so I bought a chocolate chip hot cross bun for breakfast tomorrow! @harriethoyle I’ll be fasting again on Thursday too…

harriethoyle · 23/03/2022 07:58

SV this morning in that my London indulgence weight is off! Normal day today then FD tomorrow to try and get closer to current target... I've got a chicken wrap for lunch and prawn thai curry for dinner, both out of the freezer. Trying to empty it before the in laws inevitably bring hampers of food at Easter 😂

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 23/03/2022 07:58

I'm buying hcb tonight for Friday's breakfast @sweetgingercat!

KylieKoKo · 23/03/2022 09:30

I'm fasting today. I've woken up feeling pretty full from my dinner last night. Let's hope that continues all day.
