Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Day 2 of a b2b. I have woken up feeling a bit hungry but will try to hold off until at least lunch. I am having a big black coffee now and have planned garlic prawns for lunch, cooked in a tiny smidgeon of butter as I hoping having a bit of fat will help to fill me up a bit.

KylieKoKo · 16/03/2022 10:24

OK I am starving. I am going to have to have a boiled egg and a miso soup I can't concentrate on work!

Givemestrengthorvodka · 16/03/2022 11:17

Hi all, I'm new to this. I've 3stone to lose and tried cutting calories but I blow it all at the weekend and then struggle to get started again. So I'm trying to be much stricter. No booze for rest of March, really interested to see how that impacts on my eating habits. I'm doing the fast 800 and 16:8 eating window. I'm enjoying quite a bit of exercise just now so will go over 800 some days in the first couple of weeks as throwing in some carbs for the days I'm running. Looking forward to being part of this thread.

My starting weight is 15.11 stone. Overall goal is 3 stone but first hurdle is to get to 14stone 9lbs.

Started yest and came in at 710 cals. So far, so good today.

MultipleMum5 · 16/03/2022 15:49

Hi all, just checking in. On 1st day of my b2b… going ok so far, fish with veg for tea which I can’t wait for.

You poorly people with covid… get well soon Flowers

MultipleMum5 · 16/03/2022 15:50

Keep going @KylieKoKo nearly there now!

And welcome @Givemestrengthorvodka Smile

Beautiful3 · 16/03/2022 22:08

3rd back to back fast today, ended on 531. Looking forward to tomorrow! Well done Wednesday fasters!

harriethoyle · 17/03/2022 08:23

Well done @Beautiful3. I'm still in awe of your b2b2b!

Anyone fasting with me today?

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 17/03/2022 09:04

Another 1.5llb compared with this time last week Grin

Beautiful3 · 17/03/2022 09:15

Thanks @harriethoyle sampled one of the home baked cakes for, red nose day, for breakfast! 😋 Those 3 days really help me shift it faster, I can feel it. I love it, feels like a nice reset for the rest of the week. Have a good fast day today, you can do it 💪

harriethoyle · 17/03/2022 09:31

Fabulous @KylieKoKo!!

Good work kylie!

EatYourFive · 17/03/2022 10:34

Unfortunately no fasting for me this week, will see about next week. Covid has affected me much more than I expected (thought it was only supposed to give you mild symptoms!), back to work today but only because I'm getting so behind this stuff.
How are you getting on @absolutelyknackeredcow?

Good luck today's fasters, really hope I can join you again next week.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 17/03/2022 11:41

Similar @EatYourFive - it's been mega grim.
I'm surprised how hard I have been hit and there is no way I can fast. Might be able to do some singles next week but need to get better first

Lots of love to you @EatYourFive

EatYourFive · 17/03/2022 12:11

Oh no sorry to hear you are suffering as well @absolutelyknackeredcow! I'm quite surprised how bad it has been, I no longer have fever but my chest feels really heavy and I get out of breath just from talking and just feel rough in general. Funny how it affects people so differently, DC1 had mild symptoms and got over them quickly, DC2 has been really poorly and still has a bad cough, DH who is vulnerable is still testing negative!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 17/03/2022 12:58

I still have a Temp although no cough as yet.
None of my family have got it yet which is a miracle

incognitodorrito · 17/03/2022 14:51

@Givemestrengthorvodka - Welcome ! I also started exercising along with 5:2 and would recommend avoiding scales if you can. I started January, I’ve dropped a dress size and friends have commented, yet I’ve not actually lost that much, Im building muscle so that once the fat drops off, here’s hoping it’s all nice and toned underneath.. ! I’ve also found I cannot skip breakfast, even on FDs as it makes me grumpy. A ton of thinly sliced cucumbers and two boiled eggs on these rice bread things I’ve found in home bargains are more than enough and I’ll skip lunch and have a late afternoon snack and then dinner.

incognitodorrito · 17/03/2022 14:58

If anyones interested in bulky bread like food during FDs, i discovered these at home bargains, not a taste sensation high, but, they are alright and go well with boiled eggs, soup, prawns, cottage cheese etc and they fill you up - 18 cals a disc !

5:2 thread 97: life in the Fast lane is a wonderful thing!
Givemestrengthorvodka · 17/03/2022 15:21

@incognitodorrito thank you. 3rd day and so far so good! I'm going to try a run later today so will see how energy levels are feeling (not that I've ever found a run easy!).

Those little discs looks like a great option...will hunt them down.

Hope everyone that is currently feeling poorly is back on form soon

Beautiful3 · 17/03/2022 17:57

Ooh they look good on a fast day @incognitodorrito, thanks.

sweetgingercat · 18/03/2022 13:24

Hi all, anyone fasting today? I am, I’ve had a friend staying all week, she’s just gone and I’m back on focus (although I did manage my b2b earlier.

Sorry to hear coronavirus has hit the board a bit too hard and hoping you both feel better soon. It seems everywhere right now.

After my kimchi discovery earlier in the week I am now onto sauerkraut… low calorie, filling and fermented!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 20/03/2022 17:30

Hi all, signing in but not signing in - on holiday so having a break and back after. Not really fasting on hols but doing plenty of walking to counteract the eating.

Beautiful3 · 21/03/2022 07:07

@sweetgingercat I'm fasting today too. We can do this 💪 starting to have those wavering thoughts where I'm not losing weight quickly enough and feel "fat". Not sure what's going on with me today?! Going for an hours walk with the dog after the school run, that should lift me up. Good luck Monday fasters.

EatYourFive · 21/03/2022 07:49

I'm still on the fence whether to fast today or not. Had already decided would do at least one FD& but have now woken up with headache and nausea - bloody covid! Will have a cup of coffee and see how I get on.
Good luck today!

harriethoyle · 21/03/2022 08:01

Morning @Beautiful3 I'm joining you in a FD. Doing usual b2b and probably Thursday this week after an incredibly indulgent weekend in London which took in Tom Kerridge's and Angela Hartnett's restaurants!

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 21/03/2022 09:03

Morning @Beautiful3 and @harriethoyle… yes I’m fasting today. We can def do this! @Beautiful3 strangely I have similar feelings to you… first of all fasting doesn’t seem to be such an incredible huge effort any more, which is great, instead it has become a bit boring, which is not so great. Also I feel that I’m not losing quickly enough, which is actually rubbish because I was able to wear my pink jeans for the first time in years last week. And it’s really slow to go on my tummy which is irritating, but then I’m menopausal so not so surprising… I guess we might have hit a little mental/physical hurdle and we just have to plough on through with a bit more exercise, water etc to shift those reluctant pounds! Sounds like your long walk is a great idea! I’m going to go cycling a bit later today too… @harriethoyle that sounds like a lovely weekend!
