Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Good morning, unfortunately I now have covid and feeling pretty rough so no fasting for me today, will see if I feel better towards the end of the week and might try and do at least one FD.

Good luck everyone!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/03/2022 11:19

@EatYourFive I have also gone down with the Rona.
Feeling rough too
Get well soon

EatYourFive · 14/03/2022 11:23

Oh no sorry to hear that @absolutelyknackeredcow! Hope you feel better soon!

sweetgingercat · 14/03/2022 11:31

Morning b2bers and fasters… signing in for the first day… feeling a bit worried as I only fasted twice last week and went to two birthday parties and snacked out a bit. It’s great to get back to a fast day and hoping it goes smoothly…

Sorry the ‘Rona’s got you both, rest up well and hope you both have mild cases…

harriethoyle · 14/03/2022 15:23

Oh no @EatYourFive @absolutelyknackeredcow! Hope you both have it as mildly as I did...

TheWayTheLightFalls · 14/03/2022 15:46

@EatYourFive @absolutelyknackeredcow sending good wishes to you both, I hope it’s mild. I’m off for a PCR test, in related news.

Things have been much easier today than yesterday, I think just because I’ve been busier. Had a supermarket sarnie for lunch (bleurgh… the only thing I could find in calories) and planning small portion of beef stew for dinner later, with a mountain of broccoli. Otherwise just black coffee and rooibos teas. How are others doing?

harriethoyle · 14/03/2022 16:17

@TheWayTheLightFalls I'm doing ok - like you I've been really busy and it makes it so much easier. Fishcake and broccoli tonight!

harriethoyle · 14/03/2022 18:52

Kitchen closed here on 491 which gives me some wriggle room tomorrow if necessary...

Thanks all - feeling a bit better tonight after eating my body weight in food today. My body was screaming for it

incognitodorrito · 14/03/2022 20:21

@TheWayTheLightFalls

Ha, incognito, are you also up with young kids? Grin
Yes @TheWayTheLightFalls, my nearly three yr old and I are normally up with the birds. Kitchen closing at 540 today. Off to bed shortly to avoid temptation. Congratulations to the Monday Fasting Crew !
TheWayTheLightFalls · 15/03/2022 08:41

600g down this morning which I’m v pleased with as I was expecting a gain. Now 68.5 - 3.5kg to go. Definitely finding the last stretch tough and I think I’ll need to stick to b2bs to make a go of it.

Good luck Tuesday fasters!

harriethoyle · 15/03/2022 09:39

That's excellent @TheWayTheLightFalls - I definitely think b2b sheds the weight faster although I have no idea of the science behind it..

Anyone else on day 2 of b2b with me? I am HUNGRY this morning but busy today so should be able to hold out until lunchtime for my tuna thin. Salmon for tea tonight I think.

KylieKoKo · 15/03/2022 11:08

Checking in for a fast day today!
I didn't do my usual Monday fast as I met a friend for lunch. I will try and do a b2b unless I wake up starving tomorrow.

sweetgingercat · 15/03/2022 11:30

yes @harriethoyle, I am on a second fast day. I got through my first day with a friend here serving salmon and salad for supper and so far I haven’t felt hungry. I always feel so much happier and healthier on an empty stomach! Good luck to you and @KylieKoKo!

harriethoyle · 15/03/2022 18:13

Kitchen closing on 736 which gives me 1226 for both days. Happy with that!

OP posts:
Beautiful3 · 15/03/2022 19:21

Kitchen closed at 618. Today was a second back to back. Going to try a third back to back tomorrow, fingers crossed.

sweetgingercat · 15/03/2022 19:37

well done @harriethoyle and @Beautiful3! I haven't had supper yet because I tend to eat a bit later but all good so far.

I've also discovered some food that was really really helpful. Probably like everyone here, I am always looking for something that feels substantial to eat but isn't really! Today I found 80g of packaged kimchi from Waitrose that is only 38 kcals for 100grams and it was totally delicious and saved me from having dressing with my salad. I'm a happy faster today with that!

Hope you are getting through covid okay @absolutelyknackeredcow and @EatYourFive.

Mulberry10 · 15/03/2022 21:16

Hi can I join you?

I’m on week 5 of 5:2, but i don’t know if I’ve lost any weight because I’m not getting on the scales. I’m somewhere in menopause and it seems to make my weight fluctuate illogically, even if I eat very little - which is incredibly demotivating. So I’m aiming to go by clothes rather than weight.

Anyway I’m finding 5:2 very manageable so far. I fast on Tuesdays and Thursdays when I tend to be in back to back meetings, so I often couldn’t eat anyway. I’m also wondering about trying to add in 16:8 on eating days. Would that work? Do you think it would contribute anything?

V grateful for any advice!

KylieKoKo · 15/03/2022 22:54

All done on 499 for today. I'm attempting a b2b tomorrow.

@Mulberry10 sometimes I'm not hungry the day after a fast til early afternoon so I do an accidental 16:8 but I'm finding that I'm losing without having any special rules on eating days but just being mindful of not eating when I'm not hungry. I have given up alcohol for the time being which is probably saving me few hundred calories over the week!

harriethoyle · 16/03/2022 08:52

Welcome @Mulberry10!

Good luck today @KylieKoKo. I'm back hovering above my GW, 1kg to go and a FD tomorrow. However we have a very indulgent weekend planned in London and so I'm aiming to get to GW by the end of the month 🤞
