Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

So I could have a bag of steamed veg at say midday then use the remaining calories at around 4/5pm, sound like a good plan? Needs to be easy as I suffer from chronic fatigue and other conditions

I’d chuck a boiled egg or grilled chicken or something in there, otherwise you’ll likely not feel satisfied. Something like miso soup with boiled egg and lots of broccoli is typical for me, or tuna salad, or baked beans with veg, or dhal.

EatYourFive · 07/03/2022 18:34

Kitchen closed at 528 today. Had some bolognese sauce and a small portion of pasta for dinner. I also usually avoid carbs on fast days but planning a lunch time run tomorrow and runs on FD2 are usually really hard work.
How has everyone been else getting on?

Thank you. Ideally I was hoping to keep the majority of the cals for my 4/5pm dinner but I've realised I can't manage to fast completely until then and so need something to eat at lunch to make it more sustainable. Hence was thinking low cal veg may suffice.

I tried a protein bar which worked really well but its 227cals so leaves me with too little cals later on

Beautiful3 · 07/03/2022 20:11

Kitchen closed at 513 today. Well done Tuesday fasters.

Beautiful3 · 07/03/2022 20:12

Oops I meant Monday fasters!

KylieKoKo · 07/03/2022 20:47

I'm about to make a boiled egg which will make my total 480 calories for today. Looking forward to eating more tomorrow then I'll do my second fast on Wednesday.

MultipleMum5 · 07/03/2022 21:28

Well done fasters. Went a bit over at 550. Might see how I feel and do a mini fast day tomorow, then fast again on Friday.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 08/03/2022 06:24

Morning all, signing in with a nice graph Grin showing my weight loss since Nov. Now at 69kg, down from 78. I’m definitely a slow and steady type, but it works for me.

Good luck Tuesday fasters!

Beautiful3 · 08/03/2022 07:54

Who's fasting today? I'm going to try a back to back.

harriethoyle · 08/03/2022 08:44

I'm with you @Beautiful3. @MultipleMum5 why don't you try and b2b? If you were 550 tomorrow you'd have 750 to "spend" today...

EatYourFive · 08/03/2022 09:25

@TheWayTheLightFalls that's a beautiful graph, well done.

FD2 for me today.

DD has just tested positive for covid, I really really don't want to get it now, have a big party to go to on Friday and have been looking forward to it so much. Not been out for months and now that I have lost some weight I was also going to wear a dress that I haven't been able to wear for years. Will be gutted if I can't go.

KylieKoKo · 08/03/2022 09:52

@Beautiful3

Who's fasting today? I'm going to try a back to back.
Not me I've woken up ravenous after yesterday's fast! I'll be fasting again tomorrow.

Good luck Tuesday fasters!

KylieKoKo · 08/03/2022 09:52

Fingers crossed she feels better soon @EatYourFive

MultipleMum5 · 08/03/2022 10:09

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls

@harriethoyle my friend is coming for lunch today so I’m not fasting today.

Does anyone know if there’s any evidence re b2b being more effective? Or from personal experience? I will do another b2b next week.

harriethoyle · 08/03/2022 11:27

I find Mon/Tues b2b easier @MultipleMum5 because a) my weekly fasting is out the way by Weds morning b) I'm into the groove by the Tues and so it doesn't feel as tortuous (for me anyway) as two singles c) it means if you are recovering from a period of no FD ie Christmas week you can pop a third FD into the week on Thursday and still enjoy your weekend days (which obviously include Friday!) No idea if it's more effective or not...

ARGH @EatYourFive that's so vexing. Fingers crossed you stay clear. Lots of handwashing and try and use separate bathrooms etc

Gah eat. Keeping everything crossed for you.

Does anyone know if there’s any evidence re b2b being more effective? Or from personal experience?

I find it more effective for weight loss as well as easier (I often wake up after a FD not at all hungry), but that’s anecdotal.

sweetgingercat · 08/03/2022 13:07

Yes I’m fasting here. Kitchen closed last night at 495 so I have some wriggle room today.

@MultipleMum5… this is my third b2b. Prior to that I used to fast on Mon, Wed and Fri. After a few weeks of that B2b is not difficult. In fact I found the second day is a lot easier as you’re already not really hungry from the day before. Like @harriethoyle I can do another day on Thursday and I’m over for the week.

What convinced me though was listening to a doctor on a podcast which was posted earlier in this thread. The doctor demonstrated that you would increase the rate of fat burning by fasting two days in a row because you were already fat burning from the night before.

EatYourFive · 08/03/2022 18:48

Kitchen closed at 560 here.

DD seems fine and if it wasn't for the positive test would never know she had covid! I feel like I have a tickle in my throat, hoping it's just in my head. I really want to go to the party on Friday.Sad

Beautiful3 · 08/03/2022 19:05

2nd back to back today, kitchen closed at 602. @EatYourFive hope your daughter's okay and that you don't catch it. @KylieKoKo I'm going to fast with you tomorrow. @MultipleMum5 I used to fast 2 days spread apart but discovered by an accidental back to back, that I lost more weight. I find it easier to do back to backs because my appetites reduced. Most weeks I can do 3 in a row.

harriethoyle · 08/03/2022 21:46

Kitchen closed here on 580. Planning a croissant for breakfast Grin

Kitchen closed at 731 and I am feeling GOOD!

Sorry to hear about your daughter @EatYourFive and crossing my fingers you’ll be okay for your party!

Granola for me this morning, which I am really looking forward to!

EatYourFive · 09/03/2022 08:29

Woohoo went below my initial target weight for the first time this morning! Have now lost 8.8 kg since early November which seems amazing! Have now set up a magical new target 59 kg, not seen the scale dip below 60 kg since my 20s but here we go!

harriethoyle · 09/03/2022 10:04

Fabulous @EatYourFive!! Well done! I didn't weigh this morning because I've been staying with friends (long story involving me being a dickhead, losing my car keys and DH being away with the spare...!) so I'm going to do another FD tomorrow and then weigh on Friday to see where I am...

KylieKoKo · 09/03/2022 10:30

I am fasting today but my period is due in the next couple of days so I think it might be a tough one. Wish me luck!
