Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Go on @TheWayTheLightFalls! shakes pompoms from sidelines Grin

I'll be checking in tomorrow morning!

I really try to keep fasting to during the week so I can have family meals at the weekend... But I am really looking forward to joining you @TheWayTheLightFalls and everyone everyone else on a b2b tomorrow...

...especially as I have just tried on my ski trousers which I haven't worn since 2004 and they still fit me. Okay, I'll admit, they're not size 10, but a few months ago I wouldn't have got into them!

KylieKoKo · 06/03/2022 17:27

I did a Sunday fast once and found it incredibly difficult.

I'll also be fasting tomorrow @sweetgingercat. I just picked up the ingredients for a 300ish calorie prawn and veg stir fry. I'll do my second fast on Wednesday as I find that b2bs don't work well for me.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/03/2022 17:56

Kitchen closed on 500. Won't lie I have hated it and I'm starving
I have my big event tomorrow and that has pushed me on.
Fasting Tuesday as well if I can

TheWayTheLightFalls · 06/03/2022 18:34

Kitchen closed here. No breakfast, roast chicken breast with broccoli and a small quantity of potato for lunch, baked beans with broccoli for dinner. And Diet Coke. And black coffees. I’m sure it was over 500 but that’s in line with my lackadaisical approach to measuring Blush.

I genuinely don’t find Sundays bad at all! I have young kids and it feels less stressful not having to think about food for me. I know that if I wasn’t fasting I’d be eating everything in sight.

Will aim for b2b tomorrow but if I wake up ravenous it’ll be Tuesday. I’m up vv early so I know by about 4am whether a FD is feasible Grin.

Good luck Monday squad!

MultipleMum5 · 06/03/2022 18:57

Wow well done sunday fasters… nearly done now.

@incognitodorrito I had a chuckle at your lizard brain. I am just the same…. Takeaway ordered for tonight… will fast tomorrow Grin

MultipleMum5 · 06/03/2022 18:58

@absolutelyknackeredcow enjoy your big event! Sounds exciting and you will feel slinky Wink

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/03/2022 19:06

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls! Great result
@MultipleMum5 Thanks - it's very exciting but a big outing so best not post

Beautiful3 · 06/03/2022 20:27

Wow, well done weekend fasters! I couldn't have done it, at the weekend! I'm fasting tomorrow. Had a real blow out the last few days, due to numerous meals out and too much birthday cake. Hope I can lose this!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 07/03/2022 07:41

Checking in for day 2 of a b2b. I’m working today so hopefully the day will pass quickly. Weighed this morning and have sts which I’m happy with at this stage.

EatYourFive · 07/03/2022 07:44

Checking in for Day 1 b2b. Welcome @SingaporeSlinky!
@incognitodorrito I also have a habit of undoing my hard work at weekends.. I try to compensate by exercising but didn't have time for it this weekend (bloody kids parties seem nonstop now that covid restrictions are done!) so I'm not feeling brave enough to step on the scales this morning..

harriethoyle · 07/03/2022 08:29

@Beautiful3 @TheWayTheLightFalls @EatYourFive @KylieKoKo I'm checking for the Monday squad, day 1 of a b2b! Got back late last night after a week away so no chance to buy ie thins, etc for today's packed lunch. Will have to buy a sandwich which always annoys me. Fishcake and broc for tea tonight 🤞

Beautiful3 · 07/03/2022 09:58

@harriethoyle love the Monday squad. We can do this! I've adjusted to life without tea/coffee. It was tough going last week! I'll be fine now, I've got my hot lemon & lime/camomile teas.

KylieKoKo · 07/03/2022 10:29

Good luck Monday fasters!

MultipleMum5 · 07/03/2022 10:44

Morning Monday fasters! We’ve got this 👊🏻

I’ve had 2 cuppas, will be minestrone soup for lunch and then fish with veg for tea.

harriethoyle · 07/03/2022 10:54

Is it lunchtime yet? Confused

OP posts:
MultipleMum5 · 07/03/2022 11:09

@harriethoyle am sat having my soup so yes Blush

sweetgingercat · 07/03/2022 12:52

Morning (well afternoon) fellow Monday fasters... I'm in too this week and haven't eaten anything yet, but about to boil an egg. Good luck everyone, we can win this one! Look forward to clocking in later!

For those who split calories on fast days, what do you eat which helps keep blood
Sugar balanced?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 07/03/2022 16:21

@onwardsandupwards22 for me it’s all the obvious things (sorry) - no / low sugar, few carbs, lots of veg which is unlikely to spike blood sugar.

onwardsandupwards22 · 07/03/2022 16:56

So I could have a bag of steamed veg at say midday then use the remaining calories at around 4/5pm, sound like a good plan? Needs to be easy as I suffer from chronic fatigue and other conditions

sweetgingercat · 07/03/2022 17:00

Yes @onwardsandupwards22, I avoid carbs mostly because it makes me hungry and I know it delays the process of getting into ketosis. So protein and veg - mainly eggs, fish, a little bit of cheese and lots of salad. Sometimes I might have a brown pita pocket. In practice that's an egg in the morning, salad for lunch and supper with a little bit of grated parmesan and smoked salmon.

I also find if I avoid white bread, rice, pasta etc for the day after a fast I can keep the hunger at bay then too.

KylieKoKo · 07/03/2022 17:02

Sounds good to me. So far I have had a miso soup and a babybel cheese and a lot of herbal tea. I have having a prawn and veg stir fry (using low cal cooking spray to save calories from oil). Then I have enough calories leftover for a boiled egg and an easy peeler orange for a snack before bed as I can't sleep if I am hungry.

I don't know a lot about blood sugar balance but I find that basing my meals on prawns, eggs, cottage cheese (not the nasty low fat stuff) and beans and legumes and adding veg keeps me fuller. Mushrooms are very low calorie and are good for bulking out meals.

harriethoyle · 07/03/2022 17:22

Agreed @onwardsandupwards22 - some good advice from PP. I always bulk up on broccoli or stir fry veg on a fast day. Lots of bulk for very few calories.
