Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done @EatYourFive that's amazing! Second fast day tomorrow so will weigh in again after that . Next week I have a work trip/afternoon tea/St Patricks Day plans so I have no idea when I'm going to get fast days in apart from Fri/Sun, hate doing the weekend but needs must

MultipleMum5 · 09/03/2022 10:37

Good luck @KylieKoKo you can do it.

Thanks for the info re b2b ladies. I’m definitely going to do another b2b next week.

I work shifts as a nurse so I can’t fast when on shift, I need to be able to eat and have my wits about me (anyone else feel like this? I know most prefer to be busier but I’m scared of being lightheaded and making a mistake).

KylieKoKo · 09/03/2022 11:56

Thanks @MultipleMum5 I am already feeling peckish ...

Beautiful3 · 09/03/2022 14:08

@KylieKoKo you can do it! I'm on my period too and dreaming of chocolate! We re already more than half way through the day, so nearly there! Tomorrow I'm going to eat a picnic bar!

KylieKoKo · 09/03/2022 17:14

@Beautiful3 I am going to Nandos with colleagues. The thought of that is getting me through.

Beautiful3 · 09/03/2022 17:15

Kitchen closed at 602, that includes a biscuit later. How you do @KylieKoKo?

KylieKoKo · 09/03/2022 18:26

I'm currently on 360 but still hungry despite just eating a small piece of wild salmon and some veg.
I'm going to have a couple of boiled eggs later on this evening so I don't go to bed hungry. It's taking every bit of my willpower not to order in a kssdove carby takeaway. Fasting just before your period is horrible.

sweetgingercat · 09/03/2022 19:47

Well done @KylieKoKo, you can do it! and well done @beautiful3. And fab @EatYourFive... that's great news!

@harriethoyle I am not fasting with you tomorrow because it's my DH birthday. I'll be doing it on Friday instead. Anyone else going for a Friday fast?

harriethoyle · 09/03/2022 19:51

Happy birthday for tomorrow to Mr @sweetgingercat!

Well done @KylieKoKo you've done it. You can eat what you want tomorrow. I agree the few days before you're due on, are the worst in terms of hunger. I'm really looking forward to having a lovely sandwich tomorrow!

onwardsandupwards22 · 09/03/2022 22:28

Any advice on when to begin fasting post covid? I'm on day 5 and feel dizzy and weak just yet. Wondering how long to wait

harriethoyle · 10/03/2022 05:53

@onwardsandupwards22 I'd wait til you feel near back to normal. I had a full week off fasting.

Anyone fasting with me today? I'm 1kg away from my goal weight so hoping today's FD will take a few more grams off and maybe I'll get there next week?!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 10/03/2022 08:39

NFD for me harriet but eek, good luck, that's really exciting you're so close.

KylieKoKo · 10/03/2022 08:53

After my painful fast day yesterday I was -just about-- under 12 stone for the first time in ages. And I'm due on my period so will probably be retaining some water. I'm ravenous today though so hopefully I won't eat my deficit back!

harriethoyle · 10/03/2022 11:16

You'll be super slinky next week @KylieKoKo!

You'll be super slinky next week *@KylieKoKo*!
@harriethoyle I had chips at lunch time and dp has twisted my arm into getting Thai tonight so I'm not sure about that!
KylieKoKo · 10/03/2022 18:54

@MultipleMum5

Well done *@KylieKoKo* you must be feeling so pleased!
I am pretty happy. It makes the pain of premenstrual fasting almost worth it ....
EatYourFive · 10/03/2022 19:27

Well done @KylieKoKo!

DD2 got covid symptoms today so unfortunately the party I have been looking forward to for months is a no go now. Sad I'm still testing negative but just don't want to risk making it a superspreader event. Gutted. Feeling a bit rough so pretty sure will test positive over the weekend. We'll see. Having some wine tonight as feeling sorry for myself.

EatYourFive · 10/03/2022 19:28

Should add DD1 is absolutely fine and DD2 not feeling too bad.

harriethoyle · 10/03/2022 20:33

Awww @EatYourFive I'm sorry to hear that. From experience, wine made both pre covid and actual covid MUCH more bearable! 🍷🍷🍷
