Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Happy birthday today @harriethoyle and @Beautiful3 tomorrow!
I have had lots to eat today (pret for lunch and halloumi, fruity couscous and a glass of red for tea) so think will do a proper FD tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 03/03/2022 08:11

Happy birthday @Beautiful3! Have a lovely day. I'm vaguely hungover so won't attempt a FD today Grin

I am @MultipleMum5

Day 2 of a b2b if I can make it! I am feeling a bit peckish but I drinking water and making black coffee to will try to hold off for a couple of hours.

sweetgingercat · 03/03/2022 13:16

I'm fasting today as well @KylieKoKo, @MultipleMum5 and @EatYourFive. So far so good. Good luck all of you...

Beautiful3 · 03/03/2022 13:52

Thank you everyone ❤ looking forward to birthday cake (chocolate gnache) and cream later! 😋 well done fasters, keep going, the day is nearly over! 👏

onwardsandupwards22 · 03/03/2022 15:45

@harriethoyle and others - anyone here suffer from M.E and successfully follow 5:2 with 500 cal fast days?

MultipleMum5 · 03/03/2022 16:20

So far so good- really struggle around this time of day but a slice of ham and a glass of juice has helped!

Hope everyone else is getting on ok today x

sweetgingercat · 03/03/2022 20:42

I've just got home. I've had a boiled egg, some smoked salmon and a miso soup so far, so I think I'll be fine.

Well done for struggling through!

MultipleMum5 · 03/03/2022 21:19

Well done @sweetgingercat.

I’m sat having a cuppa and feeling pleased with myself for completing my first fast. Can’t say I’m looking forward to another one tomorrow but maybe I’ll feel more motivated in the morning Grin

MultipleMum5 · 04/03/2022 10:24

Morning all.

Second of b2b fast today… stepped on scales this morning and I’m 3lbs down which I know is water but it’s very motivating!

Felt a bit shakey so I’ve had coffee and a few crisps for the salt.

Anyone else fasting today? Can’t wait for my sausage Sarnie tomorrow!

emmsyg · 04/03/2022 11:13

12st 11 today after yesterday's fast WooHoo!!! 2lb to go for a stone off and I really feel so much better for it!

For anyone who hates calorie counting even on a limited fast day, my husband ad me into trying Huel shakes and I actually quite like them! They are 400kcal per shake but have all the nutrients of a proper meal (and are vegan, so helping me increase the amount of vegan food that I eat). I don't have them on a fast day because I really enjoy my food and like having a proper dinner, but I've been replacing lunch with one on my three non-fasting days at work and they do really fill me up!

MultipleMum5 · 04/03/2022 11:51

Well done @emmsyg! How long has it taken if you don’t mind me asking?

I haven’t used Huel but do use protein shakes for time to time- for convenience more than anything as like you say some are nutritionally complete.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/03/2022 11:51

I'm on a Friday and Sunday fast this week - so far so good

sweetgingercat · 04/03/2022 12:17

Morning all fasters... well done @MultipleMum5. I did my first b2b last week and I felt SOOOO good afterwards! I didn't really feel hungry. And loads of people gave me support on the day and helped me through. You can do it too!

I used to get headaches and feel a bit shakey in the early days as well. Someone here suggested having a bit of salt, so on fast days I have a squeeze of lime and some salt in warm water first thing. It's definitely helped.

Good luck to everyone fasting... stay strong!

emmsyg · 04/03/2022 13:00

@MultipleMum5 I started on 16th December, and I just do two regular fast days a week, and am not really careful at all on the other days. I've had a knee injury so also done very little activity in that time, although I got back to running last week, so hoping that might help me keep to a steady pound a week. I'm perfectly happy with that. I don't feel like I'm dieting and I'm still eating all the things I love without too much moderation!

emmsyg · 04/03/2022 13:01

When I say regular, I should clarify that I do two 500kcal days, and not back to back!

Itsadilemma · 04/03/2022 14:25

Hello everyone! I'm new here and going for some inspiration and motivation. I have to do a mixture of low carb (under 40g per day) and fasting in order to lose but occasionally throw in a higher carb day to mix things up a bit. I have a lot to lose and am peri so need all the help I can get!

SingaporeSlinky · 05/03/2022 08:58

Hi all, just found this thread, hope you’ll have me!
I’ve been doing 16/8 for about 6 weeks, as well as exercise and low cal eating (usually aim for 1200, some weeks 900 when I start to see a plateau / to compensate for a higher cal weekend etc)

I go to the gym after school drop off in the morning, so I’m working out at the end of my fast period (7pm - 11am) get home at around 11am, which is when I have a coffee with honey and milk, then wait until I’m actually hungry to eat lunch. I guess I’m asking for advice on whether this seems madness, or if I should stick to it, because it’s more effective for fat burning? Welcome any thoughts.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/03/2022 10:21

Checking on a Sunday fast - I know no one will be stupid enough to join me but I have a big event tomorrow and I want to look sleek
Bored and annoyed

incognitodorrito · 06/03/2022 11:00

Not fasting today but getting really annoyed at myself for having 0 restraint at the moment during NFDs. I’m good at my FDs but go overboard, every.single.weekend ! I start off with good intentions and it tends to go to pot by midday. I managed to eat 3000 cals yesterday…. wtaf !?! It’s like my lizard brain takes over. Back on my B2B FDs tomorrow but might add a 3rd FD on Weds to compensate for the glutenous greedfest that was yesterday.

incognitodorrito · 06/03/2022 11:01

And welcome @SingaporeSlinky … I have no answers but it’s lovely here and good luck @absolutelyknackeredcow for today.
