Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

The tips from this thread from before are super helpful, I had a packet of miso soup late last night at 35 calories , stopped me for going for crisps or something :-)
The vegetable soup for lunch is cooking already and have some ready to eat chicken noodle soup for the night.

@sweetgingercat does it help with your sleep if you ate most of your calories for dinner? Turmeric nutmeg and milk is calming and good before sleep, camomile tea is 0 calories and calming.
They taught us this in yoga - worth trying for like 5/10 mins or so.
Left nostril breathing:
Inhale slowly through your left nostril. After a deep inhalation, hold the breath inside and close your left nostril with right ring finger. Pause for a few seconds. Release the right thumb; exhale slowly through right nostril

@strangerInStrangeLand I do eat most of my calories in the evening and eat late too! I will try camomile tea and some left nostril breathing, thank you!

It's a relief to know that it's not only me, even if it's a bit disabling. I seem to sleep better in the morning. I had a wild dream that my old politics lecturer turned up on the doorstep and I was embarrassed because the cat had weed in the fireplace. Weird!

How is everyone doing today with b2b? It's going okay so far for me. I think the horror of everything that is happening In Ukraine right now is distracting me from thinking about food...

I work on my FDs so am happily distracted. Have got tons of energy at the moment and love the lighter mornings, so was up and out with the dog at 7am. The effects of 5:2 are making my spaniel very happy. Haven’t seen @KylieKoKo on here for a while, hope you’ve recovered from your in-laws visit last week ?

Second b2b completed. Kitchen closed today on 785. I was less than 500 yesterday so content with the two overall. Well done everybody! Knowing you are all out there keeps me on the straight and narrow!

Morning everyone can I join you?

I did 5:2 about 9 years ago and dropped the lowest I’ve ever weighed and felt great. Another 2 kids and covid and I gained 3 stone! I’ve lost 1 stone but would love to get back where I was.

I’m going to start with b2b fasts from tomorrow. You seem like such a lovely bunch Smile

I think giving up tea and coffee has definitely made fasting so much harder. My teeth have become quite yellow, so time to ditch it! But filter coffees definitely made me feel fuller.

No new record low weight this morning which was disappointing, may do another fast tomorrow.

yesterday was fail :-( I creeped up to 700 calories, but So hungry ate a thai takeaway at night :-( and dark chocolate :-( lot of it :-(

It was easy for the past 2 months, Its become so hard last week and this! I wonder why? Its not even PMS week or anything
I eat good amount on the other days - 1800 calories , I tried 1500 calories on NFD It was not sustainable. I need to get over this hump !!!

Off to Rome tomorrow and will be indulging !!! So badly need today to be a success !

I hate black tea, so I am still having milk in mine, but thinking of going for alpro almond milk because it's much lower in calories. Can I get used to the taste though!

I am fasting today for the first time in a while as we had family visiting last week and I woke up with a headache on Monday so decided not fast.

I have wild salmon and veg roasted in low cal spray for dinner. I have had nothing so far and done a strength and conditioning class. I will survive until tea time on miso soup and lemon and ginger tea.

Keep going @EatYourFive. You're doing so well. Today was not a 3rd fast day for me! I was so hungry I actually ate weetabix...I don't like cereals normally. Think it's just those 2 under my belt, for this week. Tomorrow's my 40th birthday, so there will be cake, and meals out. Happy birthday @harriethoyle 🎂 🥳 🎉
