Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@sweetgingercat I never have issues falling asleep, but do find I wake up and can’t get back to sleep on some FDs. No solutions here but would be interested in hearing of anyone has a remedy.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 27/02/2022 07:27

Morning all, signing in for a Sunday fd.

sweetgingercat · 27/02/2022 22:26

That's interesting @incognitodorrito because that also sometimes happens to me. Let's hope some more fasters come along soon to talk about it.

@TheWayTheLightFalls - hope your fast day went well... will be joining you tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 28/02/2022 07:01

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls! Anyone joining me for a b2b?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/02/2022 07:12

Morning! May try for a b2b today because I woke up feeling v not hungry. Minor SV too. Good luck sweet and harriet.

EatYourFive · 28/02/2022 07:21

Good morning, definitely in for a b2b! My weekend involved way too many carbs and I am too scared to step on the scales this morning, I think I undid all my progress during the week.

@sweetgingercat I also have no trouble falling asleep on FDs but do sometimes wake up at night and then can't sleep again. No idea what would help though.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 28/02/2022 07:58

Morning all - doing a single today and then singles on Friday and Sunday due to an event next Monday.
Going to be a hard week! Grin

absolutelyknackeredcow · 28/02/2022 08:00

@harriethoyle hope you are feeling better after your sad loss

harriethoyle · 28/02/2022 08:33

Thanks @absolutelyknackeredcow Wine

Lovely to see 5 2 thread going strong for years on here. Strenght to you all!!! Can I please join in too, I have been doing 5 2 since Jan this year, I read this thread for inspiration, Now I m wavering :-( and I feel I may get back on track if I join in here and update my status.
Today is my day 1 for the week, I am going to do back to back and be done with it. some veggies steaming in the instant pot, will have chicken soup and some fish later in the day! and miso soup.

Beautiful3 · 28/02/2022 10:25

@strangerInStrangeLand hello and welcome.
Today's my fast day, and I'm already struggling! Not sure how today's going to.pan out.

Beautiful3 · 28/02/2022 10:31

@sweetgingercat I never have trouble going to sleep, but I do wake up around 3am. It's as if that's all the sleep my body needs?! I normally get-up, let the dog out and breathe in some fresh air. Then I head back to bed, usually I can go back to sleep for a few more hours.

Beautiful3 · 28/02/2022 10:32

That only happens when I'm fasting, by the way.

incognitodorrito · 28/02/2022 10:33

Totally overdid it with pizza & Chinese takeaways at the weekend so here for my B2B today & tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 28/02/2022 10:52

I also struggle to get to sleep on day 2 of a b2b at times. No idea why, I just feel super alert. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice change from my usual knackered state but I'd rather have it in the morning than at bedtime...!

@Beautiful3 Thank you. Yes Life in the fast line is indeed wonderful ! :D
@incognitodorrito me too overdid the weekend and still wavering today . Doing back to back as well

Strength to all the fasters today

Beautiful3 · 28/02/2022 17:34

Kitchens closed at 604. Today has been very hard! I'm surprised as I normally breeze through them! Have felt the hunger all day! Will attempt a 2nd back to back tomorrow, fingers crossed. Well done Monday faster 👏

sweetgingercat · 28/02/2022 18:15

Evening everyone! I'm fasting today and like you, (@Beautiful3), I'm finding it a little hard! It always seems harder after a few days of eating, particularly if I've had some bread (especially white bread). If I do a B2B again, I hope tomorrow will be easier!

Welcome @strangerInStrangeLand... I joined a little while ago and found this is a lovely supportive place to be!

@HarrietHoyle, that's how I feel, sometimes i feel so buzzing full of energy, and super alert that it's hard to sleep. Any solutions anyone else?

I am hoping to do a B2B this week, but I'm aware tomorrow is pancake day and my kids will want to have fun with it... Does anyone have a super low cal pancake recipe please?

strangerInStrangeLand · 28/02/2022 18:31

Kitchen closed at 500 ish, soup lots of vegetables and coffee with coffeemate.
I m with you guys for the back to back tomorrow. Hope it will be easier. I hope to make it with in 500, as I have indulged too much over the last week.

harriethoyle · 28/02/2022 18:32

Kitchen closing here on 658. It's been a busy day so not too hard... @sweetgingercat I love pancake day but I'm b2b tomorrow because Wednesday is my birthday and I intend to eat all of the cake! I've got a Colin the Caterpillar waiting in the utility room for Wednesday morning breakfast if I have my way...! Cake

harriethoyle · 28/02/2022 18:33

Welcome @strangerInStrangeLand. Don't forget on b2b days you get 1300 to split over the two days! So you're doing super well on 500ish today

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 28/02/2022 19:45

Well done everyone ! I'm kitchen closed on 550

EatYourFive · 28/02/2022 20:07

Day one done, 560 calories. Well done today's fasters and good luck tomorrow fellow b2bers!

incognitodorrito · 28/02/2022 20:26

Kitchen closed at 460 cals today, was very motivated to come in under 500 cals today, probably helped that I’m still full of pizza & chow mein from the weekend. Well done everyone !

sweetgingercat · 28/02/2022 22:40

Kitchen closed here at 491. Hopefully with the extra calories I can eat a little pancake tomorrow evening that my kids are so desperate to toss! Well done everyone... it's a b2b for me too tomorrow... see you all on here!
