Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

That's brilliant @sweetgingercat, welcome to Team b2b! Smile

Going to the office today and wearing my beloved Trusted Dress (work dress I have had for 10 years!). I was so upset when she became too tight for me to wear last year, but I tried her on this morning and she fits once more!

harriethoyle · 23/02/2022 07:47

Excellent NSV @EatYourFive. I'm within 400g of pre-covid weight so I'll take that. Remembered I've got egg and chips planned for tea tonight so I'm going to do a standalone FD tomorrow rather than @Beautiful3 b3b!

That's incredible @harriethoyle! So nice and encouraging to hear about everyone's success!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 23/02/2022 08:31

Well done @EatYourFive on getting into your dress.
2lbs down this am- will take that

Beautiful3 · 23/02/2022 17:07

3rd back to back fast completed. Kitchen closed at 538. Well done @EatYourFive for getting back into your dress.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 23/02/2022 18:11

Well done @Beautiful3
So impressive
I'm doing Monday Friday and Sunday next week as I have my thing the following Monday.
Going to need a lot of support for that

incognitodorrito · 23/02/2022 18:39

I messed up my planned FD on Monday with a spontaneous dinner date so played B2B catch up Tues & Weds - closing kitchen just under 650. Congratulations @EatYourFive - your living my dream, going to get my spring / summer wardrobe down from the attic soon and hoping a few pieces will fit again 🤞

harriethoyle · 24/02/2022 12:04

Anyone fasting with me today? Just wolfed my sandwich on the strike of noon..! I think I might struggle to keep to 500 but am going to do my best

EatYourFive · 24/02/2022 17:53

How are you getting on @harriethoyle?
I'm not fasting today but have skipped lunch and only eaten a slice of bread do looking forward to dinner!

sweetgingercat · 24/02/2022 18:15

Yes, I'm fasting today @hhoyle, but have been so busy today I haven't got a chance to get on here... I'm on 262 so far, and I was hungry earlier, but I"m fine now. You'll be fine too!

Kitchen closed at 515… finishing off the day with my usual salad…

harriethoyle · 25/02/2022 06:42

Morning all, FD was the least of my worries as it turned out yesterday. Ddog 1 was in the vet hospital and last night we found out she had a very aggressive cancer 😭 no treatment possible so we let her go over the rainbow bridge. I've lost kilos of tears I think. Just such a terrible day

TheWayTheLightFalls · 25/02/2022 07:12

I'm so sorry harriethoyle. Just awful.

incognitodorrito · 25/02/2022 07:25

So sorry to hear this @harriethoyle

sweetgingercat · 25/02/2022 09:54

I’m so sorry @harriethoyle. That’s really sad… hugs to you… do you have another dog to cuddle?

harriethoyle · 25/02/2022 11:55

Thanks all, I'm just so sad today. Yes @sweetgingercat her sister is at home and is very confused - they have been together all of their 12 years so I am terrible worried about her being lonely during the day between dog walker visits when I am at work.

sweetgingercat · 25/02/2022 23:37

Sorry to hear that @HarrietHoyle I'm sure it will be a big adjustment for her, and you will be giving her lots of cuddles and love. Can you get her more toys to play with?

sweetgingercat · 25/02/2022 23:47

Hi gang...

Can we talk about sleep please?

Sometimes I find it incredibly difficult to sleep on a fast day. It doesn't happen all the time, so I don't know what causes it. I like to get a good sleep and dream a lot when I'm fasting because I've read that wild, long dreams are associated with ketosis, fat busting and autophagy.

Does this sleeplessness happen to you too? Do you know why it happens and what do you generally do to avoid it? Any tips?
