Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done all the Monday fasters
I'm kitchen closed on 586 today

Beautiful3 · 21/02/2022 20:03

Kitchen closed at 490. Going to have a second back to back tomorrow, fingers crossed.

EatYourFive · 21/02/2022 20:17

Kitchen closing at 582 here tonight. Thankfully today was a busy day workwise, always makes fasting easier. Half way there, well done today's fasters.

harriethoyle · 21/02/2022 20:29

I reluctantly got through my fast today.

harriethoyle · 21/02/2022 20:38

Well done @KylieKoKo! The reluctant ones are the biggest wins!

It's not over yet. I'm painfully aware that the chip shop is open Grin

But I'm trying to stay strong.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/02/2022 20:55

Oh everyone has done so well!

harriethoyle · 21/02/2022 21:30

Have chippy tea this week as a treat @KylieKoKo. A pleasure delayed is a pleasure enhanced!

Hi all.... kitchen closed at 538 for me today with my usual salad. Thinking about trying a b2b for the first time. Let's see how long I can stretch it tomorrow! Well done everyone else. I love Mondays when so many of us are fasting together!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 22/02/2022 07:48

Well done @sweetgingercat - honestly do a b2b. I always have a slice of dry slim bread for breakfast on day 2 and that really helps me.

Good drop over night for me. Ridiculously busy day not sure I would have time to eat tbh

EatYourFive · 22/02/2022 08:25

@sweetgingercat Give it a try, I honestly find b2b so much easier than two separate days, and feel less hungry after fasting. There are so many of us doing b2b on Mondays and Tuesdays that it almost feels like a team effort!Smile

TheWayTheLightFalls · 22/02/2022 08:28

Gosh, Mondays on here are brilliant! Surprisingly easy sun/mon b2b here. Still hovering around the 70kg mark but during TOTM and no gain I can live with that. Good luck Tuesday fasters.

Beautiful3 · 22/02/2022 09:13

It's my 2nd back to back today. Hope its a good one! Good luck Tuesday fasters!

sweetgingercat · 22/02/2022 13:16

Thanks @absolutelyknackeredcow and @EatYourFive for your support and encouragement. I've just added a brown pitta to my usual slice of salmon and salad and all is going well so far! I'll feel really euphoric, I reckon, if I make it through the day and join you B2Bers. @Beautiful3 kudos to you for doing 2 B2B. How does it feel on the third day?

I've also just realised that doing a B2B gives you much more flexibility during the rest of the week, which would be a bonus!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 22/02/2022 13:58

@sweetgingercat @Beautiful3 @EatYourFive @harriethoyle Team B2b! We can do it

Beautiful3 · 22/02/2022 14:12

Love that @absolutelyknackeredcow, thanks. Yes we can do it! @sweetgingercat the 3rd day is effortless, because I genuinely don't feel hungry, at all. The 3rd back to back fast day started off as accidental fasts, now I knowingly add them on.

sweetgingercat · 22/02/2022 14:58

Thanks @absolutelyknackeredcow, you've just strengthened my self control by a few miles! I love this group... it's so supportive.

@Beautiful3, well done! Do you think you've lost more weight doing them?

Beautiful3 · 22/02/2022 16:46

Kitchen closed at 623. Hoping for a 3rd tomorrow, we'll see.

@sweetgingercat I restarted fasting in January because I desperately want to look good again, for my 40th. I've been doing 3 days to maximise weight loss. It is working more quickly. I've gone from a 12/14 to a 10 (top and bottom). Bought some new size 10 jeans yesterday, I'm feeling good again.

EatYourFive · 22/02/2022 17:30

@Beautiful3 that's amazing! I'm also hoping to buy some new jeans in size 10 later this spring, I've been a 12-14 for ages. I can now fit into some office clothes that I bought just before the first lockdown and have never been able to wear (office shut, then clothes got too tight).

I weighed myself at lunch time today and it showed 62.9 kg. I was 69.8 kg in November when I restarted 5:2. I think I will shift my target to 60 kg soon, that's a weight I have not revisited since my late 20s..Grin

Beautiful3 · 22/02/2022 17:39

Thanks @EatYourFive. Well done on your weight loss too. You're doing so well. You can do this, keep going 💪 👏.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 22/02/2022 17:52

Bonkers day at work
Have a headache as don't think I drank enough
Still have a good 400 calories to play with when I get home

EatYourFive · 22/02/2022 19:04

Kitchen closing at 640 tonight.

harriethoyle · 22/02/2022 19:25

@EatYourFive and @Beautiful3 amazing victories!

Kitchen closing here on 585. 3rd FD on Thursday I think... unless I don't wake up hungry and follow @beautiful3's b3b lead!

sweetgingercat · 22/02/2022 21:14

Kitchen closed at 658. I did it! I never thought I could a B2B, but I was never hungry during the second day and with the 150 extra calories it actually made it easier! Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement. That was brilliant @absolutelyknackeredcow.

I'm def going to do it again next week and I'll prob do a third FD on Thursday with you Harriet.

Congrats all! Best bloody thread ever on mumsnet!
