Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Congratulations @emmsyg - what an amazing start to the weekend for you ! Despite being triple jabbed, I’ve managed to catch Covid, most likely at the gym .. ! Heavy cold symptoms which is a bummer as I’d planned to get lots of diy done whilst children at their Dads. Yesterday was a beige food out the freezer day as couldn’t be bothered cooking fresh, hoping this doesn’t undo all the good work of my FDs.

emmsyg · 19/02/2022 14:49

@incognitodorrito I had it while being triple jabbed too, had a new symptom every day for 4 days, but was ok after that- the fatigue lasted a while though! Hope you’re ok, there’s always time to fast after (although I didn’t have much of an appetite during it anyway!)

harriethoyle · 19/02/2022 15:16

@incognitodorrito I'm triple jabbed and am currently on day 9... terrible headache and fatigue on days 3 and 4 but apart from that no worse than a cold. Am back on FD's next week!

incognitodorrito · 19/02/2022 17:23

Seems a lot more common than I realised..! Guessing then it could have been a lot worse with no vaccination. I must have a different strain @emmsyg as I all I wanted yesterday was carby food, today am able to exercise a bit more restraint ! Hope your feeling better @harriethoyle and good luck with next weeks FDs, hoping to be back on mine Monday 👊

harriethoyle · 19/02/2022 17:30

Yeah sadly @incognitodorrito save for days 3 and 4 I have had no appetite reduction whatsoever! I was really hoping for a slimming strain of covid Grin

Grin at slimming covid. If only eh?

Signing in for Sunday. It may be a mini or OMAD effort today, because I've promised the 4yo an outing to the local shopping centre as a treat and I expect we'll have lunch too. Will try to look up restaurant options in advance and choose something with good healthy options.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 20/02/2022 17:29
Grin

Kitchen closed here. Went to the m&s cafe in the end, and had 335cal worth of sandwiches and a black Americano for lunch, then a ready made soup with lentil and turmeric (somewhere between 131 and 262 cals - I ate a funny quantity). Lots of rooibos tea to come, maybe Diet Coke. TOTM here so I don’t rate my chances on the scales but it’s been easy enough at least. And I didn’t realise M&S was feeding kids for free during the hols, so had a bargain lunch Smile.

Good luck Monday fasters!

KylieKoKo · 20/02/2022 18:34

I'm fasting tomorrow. Dp's family are visiting in the week so I'm not sure I'll get a second fast in this week.

harriethoyle · 20/02/2022 20:47

I'm back and fasting tomorrow! Going to be painful as I've an extremely early start but I'm busy on the plus side...

Nice to have you back @harriethoyle, hope you didn't suffer too much!
Marking my place here, day 1 B2B.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/02/2022 07:53

Hoping you are feeling better @harriethoyle
I'm b2b this week Mon / Tues
I also did an non planned fast on Saturday as I went out on Friday night and dinner did not agree with me at all 😩
Looking forward to seeing all the Monday fasters

harriethoyle · 21/02/2022 08:19

I was very lucky @EatYourFive in that I only had one really bad day and worked remotely for the rest of the time. I was very unlucky in that after day 4 my appetite came back with a vengeance and seeing my DH was isolating with me, we saw covid off with wine and takeaways! ;-) Couldn't bear to get on the scales this morning so I am going to wait until Weds when they'll be a bit more respectable after a b2b. @absolutelyknackeredcow can keep me on the straight and narrow!

Beautiful3 · 21/02/2022 09:04

I'm fasting today. Have a feeling I may struggle because the children are off school, I'll be making food/snacks all day! Glad you're feeling better now @harriethoyle. Ooh well done @emmsyg!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/02/2022 09:21

Keeping you on the straight and narrrpw @harriethoyle
You need to do the same for me
I have a big drinks thing in a couple of weeks and I need to look sleek

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/02/2022 09:38

Morning. Going for a b2b in the end I think. Woke up not very hungry so will see if I can power through. Good luck others!

harriethoyle · 21/02/2022 09:46

Same @absolutelyknackeredcow seeing a group of old friends mid March and want to sashay in looking fabulous!

KylieKoKo · 21/02/2022 11:49

I am really tempted to sack fasting off this week as I can't do 2 days due to DP's family visiting. I know logically one fast is better than none so please help keep me on track today!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/02/2022 12:05

Gah kylie. Just think how much better you ll feel once you’ve got one solid FD in the bank.

KylieKoKo · 21/02/2022 12:09

@TheWayTheLightFalls

Gah kylie. Just think how much better you ll feel once you’ve got one solid FD in the bank.
I know. I am being ridiculous. It doesn't need to be all or nothing.
incognitodorrito · 21/02/2022 12:13

One FD will sink your daily average calorie intake for the week and give you a bit of space for a treat @KylieKoKo

KylieKoKo · 21/02/2022 12:17

I am thinking it might help me not gain as we have meals out planned.

harriethoyle · 21/02/2022 12:28

Exactly @KylieKoKo. It's also important to get away from an all or nothing mentality, which can lead to disastrous NFD's in my experience! 1 FD far better than none. You got this!

sweetgingercat · 21/02/2022 14:28

Hi all, I'm here today, fasting too! I was at the vets this morning so didn't get online until now. There are lots of people fasting today, great news!

@KylieKoKo, I had to forego one day of fasting last week because I had a friend round for lunch and my partner wanted to take me to dinner. It felt much better to make a decision not to fast and keep going for the other two days, that way I was still in control and hadn't fallen off the wagon... You've got this and we're here to help!

@harriethoyle... sorry to hear about your non-slimming version of covid, and here's to a swift recovery!

sweetgingercat · 21/02/2022 14:35

@TheWayTheLightFalls... thank you for the podcast you posted. I listened to it all and that doctor was incredibly interesting, thoughtful and supportive. It really made me think through fasting for longer periods. So far I'm doing three days a week, all one day fasts and his thoughts about insulin, ketosis and leptin made me think that it would be more helpful if I did fewer, but longer fasts. I'm beginning to understand the point of doing a B2B!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/02/2022 15:26

He was really passionate no, sweet? It was something like two hours all in Grin.
