Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Morning,
Day two of b2b, yesterday I finished on 550 so a few more calories today to play with.
I don't low carb, because I'm veggie and it's very hard! However I do try to choose protein rich food on FD to try and keep me fuller for longer. Omelettes, protein yogurts, babybels, poached eggs.

However I'm not the best person to ask as I've been the same weight for the last month and a half. Despite 2 FD a week, but add in 3 strength workouts. So I'm hoping I'm losing fat and gaining muscle. But who knows!

Cocopopsss · 15/02/2022 12:11

Thanks @KylieKoKo and @TheWayTheLightFalls.

No breakfast today so let’s see how I get on.
Well done everyone, brilliant start to the week!

FarangGirl · 15/02/2022 15:18

Hi all. Hope I can join in.
Lockdown followed by escaping lockdown to stay in hotel (with the most amazing breakfasts plus a free afternoon tea) followed by an injury = weight gain! I hit 70kg and decided I need to get to my target weight of 63kg (given myself a year until my next birthday!!). I gave noom a go but lost nothing and 5:2 has always worked for me in the past. Gone back to 5"2 for a few weeks now and finally the needle is moving and I'm down to 68kg.
Looking forward to learning some tips and tricks!!
FD2 tomorrow...

Beautiful3 · 15/02/2022 16:55

2nd back to back done today. Kitchen closed at 566. Well done everyone.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 15/02/2022 17:29

Welcome @FarangGirl!

Closed here - 2x ready meals at 308 cals each + mountain of broccoli + Eclair sweet. So small amount over but broadly fine. Some rooibos tea to come.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 15/02/2022 18:51

Well done the Tuesday fasters
I'm kitchen closed on about 650 so about 575 over both days
Welcome to all the newbies Smile

EatYourFive · 15/02/2022 19:33

Kitchen closing at around 540 tonight. Well done today's fasters.

Welcome @FarangGirl! Lots of people here do fast days back to back and it has certainly made a difference for me; I find fasting much easier this way and the weight is coming off quicker, too.

incognitodorrito · 15/02/2022 21:14

Kitchen closed at 691, average of 639 cals over both FDs.

Nobble · 15/02/2022 21:39

Just completed my first b2b fasts inspired by this thread! Averaged 600 ish both days. I did 5:2 about 5 years ago and lost 2 stone, I've spent 3 months doing map to no effect so hoping I get some success back on 5:2!
Can I ask where the 650 calories for b2b votes from? I seem.to have lost my book and wondered why the allowance is more if b2b?

FarangGirl · 16/02/2022 01:20

The b2b concept sounds interesting! Is it meant to be more effective? We're away next week so was thinking of adding in an extra dayt his week and an extra day the following week. I was going to do Friday but I prefer not fasting at weekends.
Are you not ravenous on the 2nd btb day? I wake up really hungry and looking forward to breakfast!

EatYourFive · 16/02/2022 07:32

I actually find b2b fasting easier than two separate days for some reason and I feel less hungry after a fast. I started in November and have lost 6 kg since, and that's with a two week break over christmas. I usually fast Monday and Tuesday, and then eat sensibly Wednesday and Thursday, ie. no chocolate, no wine, often skip lunch but have a normal dinner. On Fridays and weekends I tend to have some wine and maybe a take away and/or other treats. It seems to work.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 16/02/2022 07:57

Another b2b er here - it's definitely easier than two single fasts and I get them over with on my busy working days.

Tiny gain here - annoyed about that. Might have been going to wild on my non fast day

absolutelyknackeredcow · 16/02/2022 07:57

Too wild on my non fast days

Nobble · 16/02/2022 08:34

I wanted to get the fasting days out of the way so Monday and Tuesday work well in that respect. I felt ok but very cold and tired yesterday on the second fasting day. Lots of warm drinks and a hot water bottle helped.

I'm going to try to delay eating until lunch time if I can to try and get some more fat burning in. I have at least 3 stone to lose and a decent weight loss at the start will help my motivation!

Cocopopsss · 16/02/2022 09:18

So I had a great FD yesterday, but an awful night’s sleep. Anything I can do to counteract this?

Really impressed with the low calorie numbers here!

KylieKoKo · 16/02/2022 15:57

NFD but absolutely ravenous today!
I am on my period so that might be why but I can't stop eating. Hopefully I haven't completely undone my fast days!

DietTillDie · 16/02/2022 19:17

Started 5:2 for the first time in my life. Day one so far. Really hard as I am SAHM with 2DC at primary and a FT working husband, who can't ant will not cook.
Did anyone had 'brilliant' idea to take hunger-stopping pills on the days of fasting? I don't think I will have enough willpower to do another day without so 'help'. My weight stayed the same for at least 5 years, I am always on some type of restriction (keto, low carb, vegan, SW), but only manage to lose 5 kgs max, even if I keep pushing myself for 4 months at the time. I always come back to my 'ussual' weight (105 kgs) and I am fed up.
I have no willpower left in me. Help!

Beautiful3 · 16/02/2022 19:19

3rd and final back to back done. Kitchen closed at 582. Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow! Well done everybody.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 16/02/2022 20:04

Hard no from me, sorry. Intermittent fasting is about permanent lifestyle changes/ways of eating imo, so quick fixes aren’t a go-er - you’re setting yourself up to fail.

I have a similar lifestyle to you by the sounds of things. I think the way I make it work is pre-prepping my 2 day food the eve before, and eating a v large volume of low-cal food (broccoli, veg stir fries, soups…) so I can’t possibly be hungry. Good luck, you can do this!

Cocopopsss · 16/02/2022 20:31

@DietTillDie
I’ve just started 5:2 again but I found that if I had a cup of tea (with just a little milk) then I’m ok for the morning. And keeping myself busy so I can’t just snack on random stuff or think too much about breakfast. These 2 things have meant I can eat at around 12.30 without feeling ravenous. I eat a 2 egg omelette and bit of toast and tea, keeps me full for a while. Also carry on drinking tea or water throughout the day. Then go on to have lots of veg and protein for dinner. It has been quite bearable.

incognitodorrito · 17/02/2022 07:02

Someone here mentioned a teaspoon of marmite with a little lemon juice in hot water - that really helps me on FDs. I could normally snack and munch all day, but since setting Monday & Tuesday as my B2B FDs, I’ve actually started looking forward to them as it resets my eating habits for the week, especially after the weekend. These are also the days I work which makes it easier as distracts from eating. I’m tracking everything i eat on MFP since early Jan and seem to reach a daily calorie intake average of 1400 (I’m very short), which is also what my Trainer at the gym recommended as daily cal intake in order to loose weight. I didn’t really notice much in the first 3 weeks, that was also the hardest time, but I’m really starting to notice my trousers getting looser and that is a big motivation for me as I just want to fit into my, purchased pre covid, summer clothes !

FarangGirl · 17/02/2022 13:14

Well, my b2b was a failure. Maybe because it was also FD3. Started off going to a meeting and someone having picked me up a latte (with full fat milk). i needed coffee so drank it! Then managed OK with a miso soup and a konjac jelly but was super hungry at dinner and was finding it hard to focus on work by that point. Ate a big plate of salad and chicken breast but then I had to do some cooking for my DD for tomorrow and started picking at that which then ended up with me eating a gorgeous fresh sesame roll that DH had brought home (with butter of course).
So the plus is that I definitely ate below my TDEE but not sure the B2B is for me! Does it get easier? Or is it because it was a FD3 B2B?

incognitodorrito · 17/02/2022 14:19

@FarangGirl i thought the concept was 2 FDs and 5 BMR/TDEE/% off TDEE days. Quite a few here do 3 FDs, unsure why but I’m guessing it’s to accelerate their weight loss ? Managing 2 complete FDs and staying within your TDEE will still result in weight loss. I think I’d crash and burn if I did anymore than 2 FDs in one week.

FarangGirl · 17/02/2022 14:30

@incognitodorrito

yeah, i've never done more than 2 FDs in a week. But was trying to bank one up for next week when I'm away Grin

Guess it was too much!! Although I might have managed if I'd planned better and not started prepping and cooking food for DD's event tomorrow.

emmsyg · 18/02/2022 21:17

So this morning I finally saw a 12 on those scales! 12st 13 so nothing amazing, but so glad to break through that barrier!
