Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Oh no @harriethoyle. Hopefully you won't be too ill with it!

KylieKoKo · 12/02/2022 23:00

I'm attempting a fast day tomorrow as it's that or b2b next week which I didn't enjoy last time. Is anyone else mad enough to fast on a weekend?

incognitodorrito · 13/02/2022 06:51

@KylieKoKo I’m not brave enough to attempt a weekend fast, too much going on with kids ! My trainer at the gym has recommended no more weigh ins as I’m exercising and won’t see my progress on the scales. Jeans do feel a teeny bit looser, but I like seeing the numbers drop. Does anyone else avoid the scales ? Get well soon @harriethoyle.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 13/02/2022 07:19

I hope it’s as mild as can be @harriethoyle and Mr Hoyle.

Me! Grin I don’t find them that bad tbh. Had my last meal done by 5.30pm yesterday, let’s see how we go. Good luck kylie.

Beautiful3 · 13/02/2022 16:08

Oh no! @harriethoyle I hope you feel better soon. Flowers
I've pigged out yesterday, unlike me really. Worried I've undone all night my good work in the week. I'm fasting tomorrow, who's with me?!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 13/02/2022 17:28

Kitchen closed on an indeterminate number of calories here - 290 cal pie type thing for lunch + broccoli mountain + Thai noodles for dinner and a small quantity of miso soup w/cauliflower. And an Eclair sweet at 32 cals. And heaps of rooibos tea. The pie really wasn’t a good choice; I was ragingly hungry an hour later. Anyway. Hopefully at least a mini. How did you get on @KylieKoKo ?

Good luck tomorrow beautiful3

Beautiful3 · 13/02/2022 18:18

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls. Thanks, fingers crossed I can fast tomorrow, I always find the first day the hardest.

harriethoyle · 13/02/2022 18:22

Thanks fellow fasters ❤ I was pretty unaffected yesterday and got a bit cocky but today's headache has been excruciating and unshiftable until about 30 minutes ago 😭 definitely won't be fasting as usual tomorrow but on the plus side I've got barely any appetite so shouldn't do too much damage!

Oh poor you @harriethoyle - sending you lots of love 💜
I'm on for a b2b today - anyone with me

EatYourFive · 14/02/2022 08:59

@harriethoyle hope you feel better soon!

@absolutelyknackeredcow I'm in, day 1 B2B!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/02/2022 09:17

We can do it @EatYourFive

EatYourFive · 14/02/2022 09:48

@absolutelyknackeredcow definitely! Just over 1 kg down from this time last week so feeling motivated (and trying to ignore my rumbling tummy!).

Poor you. Get some rest and hopefully you'll be better soon.

I fasted yesterday instead of my usual monday fast as we're going out for a Valentine's Day lunch. Hopefully will be less crowded than this evening.

Hi All,

Having tried 5:2 and keto in the past but not getting very far, I would love to give 5:2 a proper go and this thread is very inspiring!

I have a few questions if someone can guide me pls…
Is it best to do the 5:2 with 16:8 timings on both FD and NFDs?
Should I aim for very low carbs on FDs?
NFDs are low carb too, right, but with a but more wiggle room?

(I might be mixing it up with keto, but 5:2 is also low carb, high fat, high protein, correct?)

Lastly, what is the best way to time meals on FDs, skip breakfast and have early lunch and late dinner?

Thanks so much.
(I have about 8kg to lose but atm I don’t really exercise so I hope that daily walks and reducing calories eaten will do the trick! But also, I want to be healthier and fitter so I hope these are changes that I can keep up with in the long term. Having a sweet tooth and my penchant for picking on the kids leftovers doesn’t help though!)

KylieKoKo · 14/02/2022 14:13

Hi @Cocopopsss

Is it best to do the 5:2 with 16:8 timings on both FD and NFDs?
On fast days I don't eat anything until I really have to and normally start with a miso soup mid afternoon but different things work for different people.
On NFDs I just eat when I am hungry so it depends how I feel

Should I aim for very low carbs on FDs?
I don't think there are any rules on this but I find that veg and proteins fill me up for few calories

NFDs are low carb too, right, but with a but more wiggle room?
I don't try to limit carbs on NFDs and I am losing weight but I am pretty fat. I imagine that things like this will make a difference more as I approach a healthy weight. I have gone from obese to overweight without low carbing. I do a lot of exercise though so it might be wise to cut carbs if you aren't exercising. I think some of the other people will be more knowledgeable on this than me.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 14/02/2022 17:52

Great answers @KylieKoKo!

@Cocopopsss you tend to just find your rhythm imo. For example I’m happier skipping brekky and having a mountain of veg with a strong flavour sauce/soup for lunch and dinner, but others will have an omelette or something and do one meal a day. Different strokes.

EatYourFive · 14/02/2022 18:56

How are all fasters getting on today? Kitchen closing at 467 over here.

incognitodorrito · 14/02/2022 20:23

Kitchen closing at 588, I’ve also completed an hour of strength training at the gym, so although I didn’t feel hungry, I want to increase my protein intake and “treated” myself to a steamed chicken breast for dinner …

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/02/2022 20:33

Kitchen closed on 550 on first day of b2b !

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/02/2022 20:33

Well done the Monday fasters

Beautiful3 · 14/02/2022 21:34

Well done everyone. Kitchen closed at 475. Going to try a second back to back tomorrow.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 15/02/2022 05:42

What an active Monday here, well done all!

Signing in for my Tues fast. V busy morning ahead so just coffee and tea for now, then dhal and yet more broccoli later, probably x2.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 15/02/2022 07:20

Morning all ! Signing in for a second day b2b. Small drop over night which was disappointing. Busy day so hoping that will help

EatYourFive · 15/02/2022 07:47

Also here for Day two b2b. Not weighing myself until tomorrow morning. Not that hungry even though the breadmaker was on overnight and the house was filled with the smell of freshly baked bread this morning. I find b2b so much easier than two separate days, was always ravenous atter a FD before.

KylieKoKo · 15/02/2022 10:41

I ate loads yesterday and have woken up still feeling full so I going to fast today instead of tomorrow as planned. I will have to go to the supermarket to get stuff for my meal later which I hope won't be too painful!

I will be having a prawn, pepper and mushroom stir fry later on with miso and maybe an apple if I need something mid afternoon.
