Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Another 0.6 lbs off today. Not a huge loss but I am feeling a bit pre menstrual and am probably retaining a bit of water so fingers crossed I'll lose more at my next weigh in. Total loss is 7.6 pounds in 4 weeks!

Beautiful3 · 10/02/2022 13:25

@sweetgingercat I used to. I'll eat a bit of sea salt, followed by a glass of water. Then it goes away. Or a teaspoon of marmite will work, but it has calories in it.

emmsyg · 10/02/2022 13:31

Fasting today too, my scales seem determined to keep me at 13st something - I saw a 13st 0.6 last week. Aaargggghhhh, where is the 12 stone something! But will get there, a lot more exercise this week as back to the running so hopefully my knee holds up ok and that can be a regular thing again which would help!

harriethoyle · 10/02/2022 17:22

Hopefully overnight @emmsyg! How are you holding up? I'm bloody starving but trying to hold out til 6 to eat tea...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 10/02/2022 17:23

@KylieKoKo - over half a stone! Fab!

emmsyg · 10/02/2022 17:43

Hungry but a busy day! And I have no dinner planned so need to pull something together 😂

harriethoyle · 10/02/2022 18:30

Kitchen closed here on an almost perfect 501 Grin but by God, I'm so bloody hungry I could eat the whole thing again! Roll on breakfast...

Well done to all the successful fasters - it's not always easy, even when you've been doing it for a while! I fell off the FD wagon in spectacular style today: ambushed by an unexpected business lunch and with low defences due to several stupidly late nights.

No point in beating myself up over it, but I do need to (re)learn my coping strategies after 2 years working from home. I'm away for half term and not planning to fast at all since we're going skiing with the family and I know from experience that I don't have the willpower, but will be attempting to eat mindfully to balance additional calorie intake. Please be kind when I return in 10 days.....it's going to be tough!

Fillybuster · 11/02/2022 00:13

And wow @KylieKoKo!! StarGlitterballThanks

harriethoyle · 11/02/2022 07:49

Another half kilo off and, when I look at my mfp graph, it's consistently going downwards albeit in a jagged uppy downy fashion! Only 0.9kg to go to my target...

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 11/02/2022 09:28

@Beautiful3, thanks for that tip. I'm going to try that today because it's an FD for me and I have a work deadline so I really need to be on it.

Anyone else on an FD today?

Does anyone find they have a few fantasies on an FD about what they're going to eat on the next day and then get to it and find they can't really be bothered with it? This happens to me frequently!

sweetgingercat · 11/02/2022 09:36

That's brilliant @KylieKoKo! and well done for consistent losses @harriethoyle, and for sticking to it.

@Fillybuster I hear you with the skiing. We are going later in April and I already think I won't be able to stick to it. I think it's better to have a planned break than to fail. And if you are doing lots of skiing all day it will help loads.

harriethoyle · 11/02/2022 09:49

@Fillybuster @sweetgingercat I put on 4kg in a week of skiing Blush I was just so bloody ravenous every night! Had a fabulous time though, I definitely second the planned break and back on it upon your return

emmsyg · 11/02/2022 11:55

Soooo...my scales broke last night Smile , my new set of scales is giving me 13.06 this morning. Aaaarrrghhhhhhh, will 13st ever go away Confused

harriethoyle · 11/02/2022 12:05

That's so close @emmsyg - could you do three FD next week to try and get over that hurdle?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 11/02/2022 13:18

Well done kylie, harriet, fab!

Inadvertent mini today so I’m with you @sweetgingercat - skipped breakfast, just found myself having lunch at the Ivy with DH (whoops Blush) and that will be it for today I reckon. Let’s see.

Wanted to share this for inspiration, if anyone else is into podcasts:

sweetgingercat · 11/02/2022 13:48

@TheWayTheLightFalls - glad to have an FD mate today! And thank you for the podcast, I'm listening to it at the moment. It's very inspiring and interesting too.

@harriethoyle, oh dear, I better watch out and not eat too many cheese fondues then! I bet some of that 4kg was muscle weight though from skiing all day.

sweetgingercat · 11/02/2022 13:53

So everyone, tell us your really good food or snack that is low cal/low carb that you rely on on fasting days.

I have just discovered Clearspring red miso soup that is only 32cals yet is somehow so thick and filling.

And 8 cal butterscotch or rhubarb and custard sweets from M&S have helped me get through all my fast day too.

What are your favourites?

emmsyg · 11/02/2022 14:45

I’m going to give it one more week as normal as next week is an awkward one for me to find the days (without doing weekends which I hate!). I normally do a Monday but I think we might go out for a valentines lunch so it’s on to Tuesday and Thursday I think!

harriethoyle · 11/02/2022 15:05

@sweetgingercat I think it was to do with three course breakfasts, four course dinners and lunches consisting exclusively of fried onions, bacon, potatoes and eggs...! HEAVEN! Grin

OP posts:
Fillybuster · 11/02/2022 15:29

@harriethoyle & @sweetgingercat sadly I'm absolutely certain it will be weight (fat) not muscle that I gain. There's something about the combination of loads of cold fresh air and the availability of 3 freshly cooked meals a day, especially ones involving large quantities of cheese, that completely wipes out any pretence I have of having any self control. I'm a pretty good skier, so I can't kid myself that I'm burning loads of calories by working hard, and I won't even be able to tell myself that I'm doing more exercise than usual to compensate for the additional food, because I usually work out for at least 1.5 hours a day, in a far more intense way!! The only thing that might help with control are my new ski trousers which were pretty tight when I tried them on last week, so there's not much space for large lunches Grin
Ah well, I might as well enjoy it. Hopefully I'll come back under 9.10, then work on getting back to 9.3 again over the following few weeks.

Fillybuster · 11/02/2022 15:33

Oops, forgot to say: yy to miso soup, and a spoon of marmite goes a long way when I'm feeling peckish or headachey. When I'm organised, having some hard boiled eggs in the fridge is brilliant, as the protein helps with hunger pangs. Also, I found that half a can of palm hearts is a pricey but satisfying snack with minimal calorie load.

harriethoyle · 11/02/2022 15:55

We're ski food twinsies @Fillybuster Grin

@harriethoyle oh nooo sorry for hear that! I hope you won't feel too poorly with it.

A neighbour said to me yesterday that looks like I've lost some weight, it has been a long time since I've heard that! Grin So pleased that all this fasting is working and people are starting to notice.
