Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closed at 650 for second day on b2b.
I can't wait for tomorrow though - it's been a long day! Well done @harriethoyle - good to hear that husband is out of the gown

Beautiful3 · 08/02/2022 20:01

Second back to back done today. Kitchen closed at 566. Well done everyone.

EatYourFive · 08/02/2022 20:23

Well done everyone. Kitchen closing at around 590 here tonight.

harriethoyle · 09/02/2022 09:46

Half a kilo down on this time last week if that makes sense... Inching towards my current goal albeit frustratingly slowly and a lot of up and downing! Considering another fast tomorrow to consolidate...

@harriethoyle half a kilo a week when you're close to your goal weight isn't slow at all!

KylieKoKo · 09/02/2022 09:55

I am fasting today is anyone else?

harriethoyle · 09/02/2022 10:27

True @KylieKoKo but I know perfectly a slightly indulgent weekend with wine (which I am going to have in the face of the dressing gown of doom!) and I'll be back to where I was this Monday and last Monday. The see-sawing is very frustrating!

Bit of a loss here - another pound down
Well done for all the losses

sweetgingercat · 09/02/2022 13:09

@KylieKoKo I am fasting today. It's my second fast of the week - I fast on Mon, Wed and Fri. So far so good... How about you?

Last week I bust my Wed fast, and I realise it was probably because I had been eating white bread on my NF days which seemed to up my hunger levels. Now it's brown only...

I am not weighing myself by the way. When I do I get too obsessed and then despondent when I don't lose what I think I should. It becomes an up and down emotional thing which I am determined not to get into. But I know I'm losing from my clothes becoming looser and I think I'm going to measure myself too. Does anyone else do this?

Beautiful3 · 09/02/2022 13:18

@KylieKoKo me too!! We can do this!

EatYourFive · 09/02/2022 13:32

My weight was also down a bit from last week, yay! I am now 1.7 kg from my original goal but thinking of shifting it and aim for something sub-60 kg, not seen since my late 20s. Or maybe that's just too ambitious...Hmm

KylieKoKo · 09/02/2022 13:44

@sweetgingercat I fast on a Monday and then another day that's convenient, normally a Wednesday or Thursday. I have done two b2bs before but I find it really hard to concentrate on the second day so I try to avoid them. I don't think I could cope with 3 in a week!

sweetgingercat · 09/02/2022 14:00

@KylieKoKo, well done! I have never done a b2b because I think I wouldn't get on very well. With 3 fasting days I think it's only for a day and I can eat tomorrow. That seems to make it easier.

KylieKoKo · 09/02/2022 18:01

After all that it's looking like I might have to do b2b next week! Sad

I'm hoping that things don't end up panning out that way though.

Beautiful3 · 09/02/2022 19:04

Well done everyone. Kitchen closed on a 3rd back to back, at 598.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/02/2022 19:23

@Beautiful3 I don't know how you do 3 in a row
I've so impressed
I've just eaten a burger

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/02/2022 19:23

I say burger because that's how bad my restraint is !

Beautiful3 · 09/02/2022 19:51

@absolutelyknackeredcow honestly, it's much easier doing 2/3 in a row. You feel less hungry and genuinely full when you do eat. Monday to Wednesday are my busiest days. I can't fast with rest days in between, I get so hungry.

Beautiful3 · 09/02/2022 19:53

@absolutelyknackeredcow your Burger sounds delicious! I'm looking forward to croissants for breakfast tomorrow!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/02/2022 20:00

I can do two @Beautiful3 but I think three would be so hard

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/02/2022 20:00

Do you do 650 cal?

Fillybuster · 09/02/2022 23:10

Early check in for a FD tomorrow. Monday went ok-ish in the end but I toppled into a big tub of celebrations at work today and had to eat my way out BlushBlushBlushNot helped by the giant (and delicious) burrito I had for lunch. Thought I'd offset the damage with soup for supper, but on reflection realise I also ate a whole bunch of other things....total calorie intake for the day probably approaching my target for the rest of the week!

sweetgingercat · 09/02/2022 23:20

So today went fine, except I got a really terrible headache at the end of the day. I drank loads of water and it didn't go so eventually I had a little brown pita bread and a slither of cheese and it's gone now. Does anyone else have headaches? I've had slight ones before, but this was SO bad. I was wondering whether it was because I didn't really eat supper the night before, or because I should eat a bit more salt. My other half says a bit of salt with a squeeze of lime juice in water in the morning on an FD should help.

Not sure what I'm going to eat tomorrow morning. A croissant sounds delicious!

Beautiful3 · 10/02/2022 06:59

@absolutelyknackeredcow usually 500 ish but under 600.

harriethoyle · 10/02/2022 07:40

@Fillybuster I'm fasting with you today! Anyone else?
