Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Hello all! Slightly went of track tonight but will see how things look in the morning. Have significantly injured myself running - think it's tendonitis but it's all swollen and painful to walk. Also, a friend did a 'low impact' workout for me on Sunday and I'm in so much pain! I definitely need to focus on getting in shape these days not just food!

Lets see what the damage is in the morning but hopefully not too much!

Postmanbear · 16/06/2020 22:11

924 calls today and 54g of carbs. Bit carby today but I had pizza and salad for dinner and it was so worth it!

I’ve been sticking to under 1000 calories for the past 10 days and it feels much easier and I’m not really hungry. I know he says 800 is the ‘magic number’ that causes metabolic changes so I don’t know if I’m doing it all wrong now! I’ve tried googling to see why 800 is better than 1000 etc but can’t find anything. Any thoughts?

Kimlek · 17/06/2020 07:18

10.9.2 this morning
Had no booze yesterday. I drank a bottle of elderflower pomegranate presse instead (150 cals) so a lot better than wine but quite calorific. Bought some no Prosecco for when I do fancy wine.
I’ll have a brisk walk with a friend today. Probably have the cheese frittata with a salad for lunch. I’ve forgotten what I’ve planned for dinner so will add later. I’m still feeling very down. Walking on egg shells with DD1. She’s rude and dismissive which drives me nuts. I had too much wine on Saturday, lost it with her and was very unreasonable. Feel like a bad mother. I know she hates me but that’s what teens do. Thing is I don't like or respect my own mother so I’m terrified it won’t change with my own daughter and I’ve no idea what to do about it. Like I said, it’s a whole other thread but it’s affecting my mood big time and my efforts here. I don’t want to be woe is me either though!! Onwards and downwards!

Kimlek · 17/06/2020 07:24

Sorry that was all very selfish!
postmanbear I think whatever works to be honest. 1000 will still be below your TDEE so you’ll still lose. I don’t think many of us average 800 over the course of a week. I certainly don’t but my loss will be slower obviously.
Aw pheonix hope your tendinitis recovers quickly!!
You all seem to be very much on track 👏🏻

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/06/2020 07:33

@Kimlek Thanks that sounds hard, I don't really have any advice I'm afraid but you can always chat it through on here. And it's completely understandable that it will affect all areas of your life, including your food/wine consumption. Life is really tough for a lot of people at the moment. Do you think your dd is suffering from the effects of lockdown more than she is prepared to admit? Teen mental health is so challenging at the best of times isn't it? My dd is 16 and she has become so introverted the last few months. It's so hard for them (and their parents!)

@Postmanbear 800 just simply isn't sustainable for me long term. I was thinking last night actually that if I aim for 800, I usually end up around 1200 (which sounds like a shocking effort but actually is half my average daily tdee so is probably a good amount for me) and if I can do 1200 and less than 50g carbs I can have my meals and an evening snack, or a couple of glasses of wine, or a 'treat' and still stay on track. Mentally that feels more doable long term than having every day 'failing' to stick to 800.
In September I will have a new job 5 days a week and I may restructure my routine then to cut calories back as I'll be able to make a packed lunch and then not have anything else. Currently, with my nose never more than 2t away from the trough, it's very hardSmile

@Kimlek that sounds so hard. I work with teenagers and it can be a really challenging time.have you been in touch with school? They may have some resources that might help support you and her. If you want to pm me I can send you some as well.

@Postmanbear I agree with the others. And surely maintaining 1000 everyday is better than where you were before? Are you still loosing weight? Also perhaps over time you might be able to cut by 50?

As for me I was so hungry yesterday evening! I ended up having a pear, some cheese and rather a lot of PNB. Reminding myself that this is not a punishment diet and better to stay on track with types of food, but it is frustrating. I was definitely hungry though, not emotional eating. Weight is the same.i would love to see the 9s this week, currently 10.1.

Today's plan is
Lunch- spicy butternut squash soup with some prawns and yoghurt
Dinner is fake duck stirfry followed by Yog and berries.

Typing that out I seem to do better when I have enough cals for Yog and berries so perhaps that should be my go to snack.

Good luck everyone

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/06/2020 08:15

@Bestbees yes I agree about the yoghurt/berries. Yesterday I had strawberries crushed up in some mascarpone and it was very nice as well. Having some fat in the evening helps me sleep so I try to save mine for a pm snack.

10.8.8 today for me, a pound off from my little upwards blip yesterday which is good.

Bestbees · 17/06/2020 08:35

Well done @thenewaveragebear1983. I might save my Yog and berries good idea. I have been fasting for 18 and eating for 6. This would take me more to 15/9 which isn't so good. Maybe I should eat them as pudding?

Kimlek · 17/06/2020 08:55

Oh @bestbees that’s so kind of you I’ll definitely PM you! Thank you!!!

collywobble · 17/06/2020 08:58

I had another good day yesterday I had an egg and smoked salmon wrap for lunch followed by the Prawn korma from the recipe book . I've had it before and it was delicious. I made cauliflower rice from a fresh cauliflower rather than supermarket ready made and it was so much nicer . The weight loss has stalled at the moment but I'm persevering as I know I messed it up at the weekend with too much wine so now that's stopped it should kick into action again.

Kimlek · 17/06/2020 09:01

Thank you @thenewaveragebear1983 We had awful time with bullying through her GCSEs last year. How she coped I’ll never know. Except I now know that she’s been self-harming all along. For at least 18 months if not 2 years. Found out after I lost it with her on Sat. Can’t tell her I know as it throws her younger sister under the bus. I’m not very good at this mother business. I do seem to mess up quite a bit. Not all the time but...

Cocobox · 17/06/2020 09:10

Hi everyone, didn’t lose yesterday, not sure about today’s food but probably

B Coffee
L Salad leaves, feta, olives, tomatoes
D Salmon (if it defrosts in time) cavelo nero and whatever else veg needs eating

Cocobox · 17/06/2020 09:14

So sorry to hear that Kimlek, poor girl being bullied. Don’t blame yourself, being a parent is so hard, we are all just doing our best. Flowers

bluepixie · 17/06/2020 10:14

Oh @Kimlek I’m so sorry to hear ur having such a hard time. And sorry DD was being bullied....It seems such hard work being a teenager these days.....I have no advice about teenager girls but be kind to yourself it sounds hard work xxx

Coolcazza · 17/06/2020 10:29

Hello!
I'd like to join you all please. I started the diet 3 weeks ago and lost 5lbs. Then the 2nd week I fell off the wagon, now back on the wagon and lost 4lbs(including the 2lbs I put back on on the middle week. I have a carb addiction and I'm an emotional eater. I started at 12st.1lbs now at 11st.7lbs. my dream is to get to 9st.3lbs.
@Kimlek hello, I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties going on with your daughter. It's so difficult trying to have open communication with teenagers. My niece has self harmed and I know it's not a consolation but I think it's quite common and not down to your parenting. The pressures from society are immense.

Kimlek · 17/06/2020 11:36

Welcome coolkazza! And thank you for your kind words!
I love you lot!!
I think I’ll do the duck pancakes tonight for dinner. Was going to be tomorrow night but they’re easy and I’m exhausted!!

collywobble · 17/06/2020 11:46

Sorry you're having a hard time @Kimlek teenage daughters are difficult and the relationship between mother and daughter is invariably tested throughout these years . I too had a difficult relationship with my mum and worried I would have the same with my daughter when the teenage difficulties set in . We got through the other side and it does make for a stronger bond because of the tough times . She probably just needs you as her safe sounding board ( battering ram sometimes ) I hope she's okay .
Would you also mind sharing your recipe for duck pancakes as I need a very easy meal for Friday evening.

bluepixie · 17/06/2020 11:58

My plan today
Avacado quark raspberry smoothie
Lunch brocolli and Stilton soup
Dinner Thai marinated prawns and green beans
80mls of milk for coffee and olives for a snack
Should be 750 and 25 carbs x

Bestbees · 17/06/2020 13:04

Those of you interested in reading about nutrition and food I really recommend James Wong how to eat better. Just revisiting it and there is loads of I retesting stuff including rating types of fruit e.g. which berry is better than which and how berries eaten with other foods helps reduce insulin response. It has nice recipes too which are often suitable/adaptable. I enjoy roasted onion flowers.

Bestbees · 17/06/2020 13:16

Sorry me again! Another good example is that milk produce reduce the absorption of some of the berries goodness but nuts improve it. So I am going to try my berries with 10 almonds tonight instead of yoghurt. Will just much them, but could flake and toast if I could be bothered!!

Closing at 761 and 31g carbs
Ended up having some peas with dinner hence went up a little!

Justasecondnow · 17/06/2020 21:22

Hi all, esp to new joiners! remaining pretty on it today - 890 cals 70 carbs. Pretty carby but all BSD recipes so can’t be too bad I hope.

Tuna and butter bean salad
Lamb hot pot
Milk for tea
Sugar free jelly

And a 5k run. Polishing my halo! Ha! Funny when it all clicks. It usually doesn’t last so capitalising whilst I can. Also been upping my self care, aside from exercising. Reading another ‘princessing’ and weight loss thread. I can’t quite get behind the term princessing but like the idea of looking after myself with moisturising etc. whilst trying to lose weight - the idea of being kind to yourself and investing in yourself. Nails will be done tomos. Also means I can’t look in the fridge!
