Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Good day today for me too. Sounds like there been a few good mondays. Yay us!

My efforts:
Cheese, ham and coleslaw - a bread less sandwich of sorts.
Steak fajitas (no wrap)
And milk for tea

Comes out about 750 cals & 47 carbs and fit in a little run too. I do feel proud of myself when my list is short and not full of little bits and pieces I’ve had to add on. I’m also trying hard to not to give into cravings - it’s not even hunger it’s just that I just fancy something. Trying to remember the enjoyment of the something is transitory and I’d much rather succeed on this plan.

And Happy birthday kimlek sorry it sounds like you’re having a tough time Flowers .

Justasecondnow · 15/06/2020 20:28

Sorry typo 850! Not quite that good!

agteacht · 15/06/2020 20:45

Thanks @PhoenixMama
Happy birthday @Kimlek hope all okay

PhoenixMama · 15/06/2020 20:57

My day sucked. Light salad for lunch and veggie sausages for dinner and now I'm tired and want to cry. Under 800 cals though but calling it a night!

Kimlek · 15/06/2020 21:31

Nightmare few days and back up to 10.10 because I’ve hit the vino hard. Things with one of my DDs is bad. Shes not in a good place and I’m making it worse. Our relationship is dire at the mo. But that’s a whole other thread. it’s making me very sad and I’m finding it hard to focus on meal planning, prep etc.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2020 21:51

@Kimlek ThanksI hope you and your dd are ok

Kimlek · 16/06/2020 07:27

10.10.8 this morning which is 3lbs up since Thursday. I made a cottage cheese frittata on Sunday so will have some of that for lunch. I think it’s quite calorific though as I added goats cheese. It tastes a bit too cheesy! Tonight will be pan fried salmon (love a crispy skin) with carrots & green beans (plus mash for the others).
Lunch - 380
Dinner - 353
Milk for coffee - 50
No blooming booze!!!! Just under 800 and 27 carbs. Need to do this!!

Bestbees · 16/06/2020 07:27

@Kimlek Flowers I do hope things begin to improve for you and your daughter.

Official week 2 weigh in here. 1.75lb off so ok but not amazing. I think that's its probably down to some extra wine on Sunday and a carby but on plan day yesterday. Given that I am planning one higher cal day a week and trying to alternate with vegetarian days I think my weight loss will be slow but I am happy enough with that. Hoping to break into the 9s this week at today's weight is 10.1. I was 10.0.5 yesterday so it's close. I have noticed because I weigh Every day that I have a pattern of down, down, up. I wonder if that is common?

@PhoenixMama I hope today is better

@thenewaveragebear1983
@Justasecondnow well done on your successful Mondays Smile

Bestbees · 16/06/2020 07:30

@Kimlek your food sounds great, I love crispy salmon skin.

My food today:
Mackerel and egg salad for lunch
Turkey chili with courgetti for tea. Berries and yog.

I am almost certainly too carby as I add lots of green veg, but given I am a healthy weight I think that it's good to eat them right? Just reread my clever guts book.

Does everyone eat lots of leafy greens?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2020 07:52

@Bestbees yes the little up/down fluctuations can be very common. I'm half a pound up despite a good day yesterday. The water fluctuations of our bodies are so temperamental, and really half a pound isn't actually a lot of water (weigh it on your kitchen scales and see it for yourself) it's no wonder we have these mini gains.
I do eat a fair amount of veg but I do count it, at least roughly eg. Portion or tablespoon etc (life's too short to weigh lettuce)

OP posts:
Kimlek · 16/06/2020 08:26

I need to eat more leafy greens and salads but tends to be stir fry type veg. Never fancy salad if it’s a chilly day.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 16/06/2020 08:33

@Kimlek - Am also having a challenging time with DD1 (13). Probably hormones, but wow. Such hard work, so extending solidarity. Smile

Weighed in at 10st. Huge psychological aspect as had been on 10 st 1lb for seemingly ages.

Cocobox · 16/06/2020 09:17

Another good Monday here, just ate cold roast chicken, lettuce and tomatoes. I found two tiny deer ticks on my leg, got a bit of a fright, checked the whole family over. It put me off food for a few hours so I ate very little and am another 1 1/2 lbs down.

Day 5 (W1) - the plan
B Coffee
L Asparagus and poached egg
D Welsh lamb chop (just 1) and a tonne of Swiss chard, small amount of lentils, onions

500 ml golden ale (150 kc)
30 mins on cross trainer which is 3 miles for me.

I will try and tot up the calories on this and see if it is ok, I know lamb has quite a few calories. If it’s high I will drop the lentils. Not dropping the ale! I know that’s bad.

Hope everyone has a good day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2020 09:50

Just had a lovely superfoods smoothie. I don't normally eat breakfast but in the interests of mixing things up a bit I thought I'd try. The rye bread I had yesterday didn't cause me up graze all day as I sometimes fear and I wondered if maybe I am trying to be too strict on carbs when I'm running and then it results in my insatiable sugar cravings later on. So a smoothie of chia seeds, flaxseed, pumpkin seed all soaked overnight in soy milk, then this morning whizzed you with peanut butter powder, summer fruits and ice. Very nice!

I have remembered it is my wedding anniversary on Thursday, and Father's Day on Sunday. Dh wants a millionaires shortbread so I will enlist the dc but I will also make myself a slightly more sweetener-ed version of my almond brownies for myself so I have something else instead.

Cocobox · 16/06/2020 10:00

Thanks thenewaveragebear1983 it’s my wedding anniversary today! Remembered last week but forgot this morning, we will have champagne with our lamb chops Grin.

PhoenixMama · 16/06/2020 12:27

Hi all - yesterday I was under cals today I'm up 1 lb - ugggghhh! I'm really stressed right now too which probably doesn't help! Onwards & upwards!

bluepixie · 16/06/2020 14:32

Back to 10.9 After my Sunday carb fest
God sake I will drop one day below this weight. I’m sure ur all as bored as I am of being 10.9!!!
Anyways so far today
Brekkie - smoked salmon and Half a slice of low carb bread
Lunch - tuna salad
Dinner - trout grilled courgette
Aiming for 750 and 20 carbs to push over this hurdle!

U can do it kimlek! Hope ur ok
Sorry @PhoenixMama will be down tmrw if u stick to plan today. The ups and down (quite literally) on this diet is so annoying!

fufulina · 16/06/2020 14:56

Lots of brilliant motivational chat today and yesterday, thank you. I had one meal yesterday - a portion of the aubergine-instead-of-pasta lasagna (delicious!) and green salad. So about 570 cals and 27g carbs. Down by 0.8kg this morning. And less cross Blush.

Ruminating on everyone’s experiences of staying the same and breaking through certain weights and I realised that where I am in broadly where I have always stopped - for the last 4 years. Homeostasis, @thenewaveragebear1983! Need to push on through.

Well done on all the losses and postpone thoughts. Flowers for those having a tough time. Onwards and downwards!

fufulina · 16/06/2020 14:56

Positive thoughts!

whensmynexthol1day · 16/06/2020 17:11

Impressed with all the positivity today!

Ended up in hospital related to my heart condition yesterday so had a very carby 24 hours! Basically it's carbs or starve in hospital! Obviously I'm not focussed on the diet right now but refined carbs make me feel generally crap - sore tummy and super windy which I just don't need right now! Although it's not a totally bad thing to remind myself every now and again why I really do need to pass on the hot buttered toast ...

Going home in the next half hour I hope so that I can get a good night's sleep!

bluepixie · 16/06/2020 17:35

710 and 27 carbs
Not feeling full but not eating anymore!

Makegoodchoices · 16/06/2020 19:08

Closing up at 787 tonight - although may have a bovril in a bit as I’ve got a headache. Not amazing food choices but good willpower today - nothing until 1pm and then two meals. Most of my lockdown eating is from boredom.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2020 20:47

@whensmynexthol1day oh no, hope you are ok?

I've had a good day. 1200 cals, 47g carbs. 14k Steps, 7k run, and a whole afternoon of solid graft smashing up a tile floor.

There's treats in the cupboard but you know, I'm going to have a slither of cheese instead. I have a mint magnum in the freezer and I've challenged myself to see how long I can keep it for!

Tomorrow: run with ds, maybe a quick one for myself in the morning too. Continuing to smash my tiles! Food will be sardines in roasted pepper for lunch and dinner will be the lentil and coconut curry from the book, but without the chicken. Thought I'd try a veggie version this week.
