Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Hi @frumpety , it really depends on you. A lot of low carbers say 50g a day, max, which equates to about 200 calories worth/25% of your 800. If you're able to drop lower, or can have occasional very low carb days you will notice the difference. Although similarly, if you eat more carbs but as a result, eat more fibre, that can be just as effective. it really is the quality of carbs rather than the amount; 50g sugar is going to have far more negative effects than 50g carbs from green leafy veg.

Hi all,
Hungry! Might have a billion drink as that tends to help.
Tomorrow night I am doing an online zoom sangria making thing so will likely be over Cals due to booze. Should I go for 500 on food and hope that it's ok? Or stick with 800 and then accept it'll be over for that one day? I am considering generally being more relaxed at the weekend (principles not counting cals) anyway just to make this long term possible woe for me.
Thanks!

Bestbees · 04/06/2020 10:49

I meant bouillon not billion!

Also turnips? I have them in my veg box. Could I sub celeriac for turnip and parsnips for carrots in the root veg soup for example?

frumpety · 04/06/2020 11:33

Thank you @thenewaveragebear1983 , the shakes have oat and rice flour in which is probably why they are higher in carbs. Just need to work out the carbs in the other stuff I would be eating and drinking or buy some of the Fast 800 ones as they are much lower carb Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/06/2020 12:14

To be honest, I'd give oat and rice flour a swerve. It's no different (in fact probably worse as you just drink it rather than have to chew it) that eating rice (which is not allowed on bsd/fast800). If you want shakes you can use your own recipe (I do: milk, peanut butter powder, frozen fruit, olive oil, chia seeds/flax seed etc in my nutribullet)

@fufulina fantastic loss!

Everyone is persevering so well in this lockdown.

Week 10 finished for me yesterday and weighed in at 141.4 so 20lb lost now. But as I said it was 19lb two weeks ago and I had hoped to be at 140 by now. Not going to set myself a new target, will keep trundling along and let it come off eventually!

DD didn't wake up for a night feed last night so that makes today much more possible to be a good low carb day 😂

agteacht · 04/06/2020 12:53

@mumoflittlemice I think the approach you describe is fine, it's basically what I do - low carb still but more than 800 cals. Though possibly not ideal when you get to the last few pounds.

However i would agree with Kimlek (I think it was Kimlek!) that you should avoid porridge.

Why don't you try our almond flour porrridge ☺️

2 tbsp almond flour
2 tbsp flaxseed
120ml unsweetened almond milk

And you can add in berries or nut butter etc.
I was having it every day at one point, now about 3x week, and it really helps. Less than 200cals and about 2g. Plus it's yum

agteacht · 04/06/2020 12:55

@Bestbees booze is my downfall too 😂
I relax a bit at the weekend but don't go mad. I wouldn't be able to just ignore the diet. It would send me into a spiral of doom! But I can consciously eat more and drink more if that makes sense.

Justasecondnow · 04/06/2020 13:11

mumoflittlemice I hear you with it being tough. It is a slog isn’t it. Plan to stick with principles but ease up on cals as suggested by others sounds sensible. I reckon I quite often hit 1000, even 1200 when having a bad day. Better than falling face first off the wagon into a pile of cakes/scones!

Your thoughts were great to read fulfina reminded me why I’m doing this too - yeah vanity plays a part for me but actually being fit and healthy is more important.

And I tried to compare turnip and celeriac cals and carbs for you bestbees but got confused by US sites differing amounts and so on. As far as I can tell they’re both low cal & low carb so I don’t see the harm.

agteacht I think your a bit of a hero for doing this with a baby. God I was of a mess of a human being the first year of motherhood!

Week 3 weigh in tomos. I’m nervous!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/06/2020 13:35

Even 1500 calories of nutritious, high fat /protein and low carb will be ok. It's still probably less than tdee and if you were to do 5:2 in that way you would still lose weight IF you stick to the med diet on the higher cal days as well. This plan is so flexible, you can sit at the beginning of the week and factor in your plans, work commitments, social things or just simply wanting a day off and it is totally workable. The thing that can derail you is not planning it. Even yesterday when I went completely off plan for a day it's ok, as long as you have a plan in place to draw it back in.

Talking of planning, my menu suggested the mango smoothie for brunch today but I was surprised that it featured in the plan (blended tropical fruit is surely high in sugars?!) and I didn't trust myself quite frankly to have that and then not end up eating birthday cake. So instead I had avocado, balsamic vinegar, feta and mixed tomatoes on a piece of rye bread and it was very tasty albeit slightly hipster-tastic. I felt like I should have served it on a slate tile with my coffee in a jam jar...

bear you mean you didn’t serve it on a slate? Outrageous!!! I’m intrigued that your plan said to have a mango smoothie; what planner? I’ve also been wondering how your tummy tightening went? I’m guessing it’s stopped now but did you notice any difference. My tummy is looking very crepe paper ish!
bestbees I’m so disappointed it wasn’t billion. The Sangria issue won’t be just the alcohol but the fruit juices with it. It’s wine and orange juice mostly isn’t it? Neither great. Could you have just a low cal tipple of your choice? I’m trying to think of a pink drink! Tbh I’d have a night off and count it then fast longer the next day but I’m NOT a good example. Re your veg box - celeriac, swede, turnip will all be much of a muchness re cals and carbs. I stopped my veg box as so tired of getting swede and turnips in summer. Made a good mash though.
frumpety I try to stick to under 40g carbs but mine will be the worst kind.... alcohol 😋 Id certainly not waste them on rice or oats in a shake! In the fast800 there’s a few shake/smoothie recipes. If you’re interested let me know and I’ll post them. I don’t have shakes, smoothies so no idea if they’re good.
ageteacht crikey you’re doing soooooo well! I think my start weight and yours were similar and our goals except you’ve almost reached it in 10 weeks whereas I’m taking 10 months!!
I’ve had a weird day and not stuck to plan. Did a ploughman’s type picky lunch for all the kids and DH and kinda picked as I did it. So probs too much cheese and garlic jam!! Now on G&Ts and bizarrely just had 3 squares of white chocolate as the youngest offered. I don’t even like white choc. Why do I do this? Haven’t yet started cooking dinner! Oops!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/06/2020 19:09

@Kimlek by planner I mean my own plan I wrote myself on Sunday. It did come from the fast800 book though. It sounds nice but I'd imagine way too sweet on an empty stomach for me to hold any hope of not needing more carbs. My collagen actually did go well, I had 4 out of 6 treatments. I do need to return and I think I'm going to restart using the remaining 2 I have paid for plus add on the extra four to make a course of 6 again. It is annoying and expensive, but otherwise my money is wasted, I don't think just having 2 more will he as effective. It definitely reduces the crinkled look. I have pics somewhere on my phone, I'll have a look

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/06/2020 19:22

Also today: brilliant start with my hip lunch and my new coffee machine (Lidl special buy!) and dinner all planned...,but there's a stinking great legend of Zelda birthday cake on my kitchen counter and every time I went into the kitchen it was there being all cakey and delicious and I have to admit I'm not that strong.... so closing the kitchen today on 680 cals, 37g carbs plus one slice of chocolate cake. I did scrap my yogurt and berries off the menu to accommodate for it. 11k Steps (although 7k was a run so I've actually not done a huge amount).

Tomorrow: run in the morning, plus c25K with ds as well or we won't fit all our runs in this week. Small lunch factored in, plus dinner will be steak and salad, and I've allowed for 2 glasses of red wine - and can do this in just slightly over 800 cals provided the cake goes into a tin and gets hidden away!!

I’m really impressed that you are running @thenewaveragebear1983. I pushed the double pram up a big hill today and felt sick and weak!

I’m finishing on 811 and 17g of carbs. Really really want to quit right now. I’m cold and blah and would love a cup of tea and some chocolate. I need to make it to bedtime without cracking.
I’ve decided to do 3 more days which will make it 2 weeks. Can’t think beyond that atm.

agteacht · 04/06/2020 21:35

Ah you're very kind @Justasecondnow - but strangely starting it when my DD was 3 months was just what I needed. I was feeling soooooo frumpy and no one needs that when they are sleep deprived and struggling with a newborn! I had lost the first baby weight and could easily have stayed around 160lbs then without this diet. So I'm grateful for it. But I do think it's DDs fault that the last couple of weeks have been difficult 😂
Good luck with your week 3 weigh in tomorrow!! Most people find their losses slow then (mine certainly did) but back to normal within a week or so - just keep ploughing on true if that happens to you!

@Kimlek your post made me laugh!! Just had some dark choc and wine so I can relate 😂
Hope you got to your dinner in the end!
I started around 161lb, how have you been getting on? Any loss is worth having!!

What's this about a less crinkly stomach bear??
Despite the weight loss my tummy definitely will take a while to look normal again. And then I'll probably have a second child 😂

@Postmanbear have the cup of tea!
Are you eating enough fat? Maybe you should play around with your macros. Add in something low carb like some more cheese or have you tried the heck chicken chipolatas? 2 for 75cals and less than a gram of carbs! Maybe a cup of coffee with cream?

Honestly if it helps tomorrow just add a little in - if that stops you cracking altogether.

bluepixie · 04/06/2020 21:43

@kimlek I am similar to you! I just can’t do this every day! So I’ve lost a stone (well 13 pounds one more to loose to get back to my one stone loss) but it’s taken me 3 months! I started 11.9 and now 10.10. I was 10.9 two week ago but then went off plan completely put on 5 pounds (!) and have lost 4 so far this week.....

Anyways least it’s going down but wish I was more like those who manage daily for ten weeks! Amazing willpower!

Today was terrible. Drawing a line and starting again tmrw. Def won’t be 10.9 tmrw....but hopefully sat!

I suppose I’m doing my own 5;2 versions of this but some weeks it’s been more 2:5!!!

bluepixie · 04/06/2020 21:46

@Postmanbear it is though! I would think about upping ur cals or carbs just a little to make it more bearable. I tend to hit about 900 a day and 30-40 carbs and I can do and not want to eat my hand off!
I find a spoon of almond butter/Babybel/coffee with full fat milk/cooked chicken/boiled egg to take that edge off helps. I end up nearer 900 cals but I’m also not dying of hunger!

agteacht · 04/06/2020 21:47

But @Cream123 think about it - you've basically maintained a stone weight loss, that's definitely worth being proud of 👍👍👍

bluepixie · 04/06/2020 21:53

Yes that’s true! (Minus the 5 I put on!) I am pleased and it’s the first time I feel able to keep going and not stop till I get to goal. I’ve not weighed below 10.10 for 10 years now and I usually give up about now. Feel better clothes fit healthy bmi. But then it creeps up

Not this time! Going to get to 10.3 or maybe 10.
:)

Well done on ur pound loss-ur so close!

Postmanbear · 04/06/2020 21:54

Thank you @agteacht and @cream123, I will try and change things a bit tomorrow. I think I’ve got a bit too Atkins like with the diet. Today I’ve basically eaten eggs, cheese and chicken 😳.
I was doing much better when I was eating more salad/veg and following the recipes. I might do the chorizo and chickpeae tomorrow because that was nice and filling and had more good carbs in it.

agteacht · 04/06/2020 21:58

@Postmanbear don't be so strict that you fall over. You can do this... you ARE doing it!!

@Cream123 do you think our bodies know when we hit a certain weight and rebel??? I've always struggled to get below 10.3 (just above where I am now). The only time I remember getting properly into the 9s was when I was getting married. I can't remember what I ate apart from tuna and egg salad 😂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/06/2020 22:01

@agteacht I had a collagen lift on my stomach in feb/March but only got 4 treatments out of 6 done before lockdown. I have had 3 Giant babies and 2 c-sections and my stomach definitely shows it! It definitely improved the appearance of my stretched skin but I'll need to go back to finish the course once salons can open again

OP posts:
agteacht · 04/06/2020 22:04

I will have to google that @thenewaveragebear1983 sounds amazing!!
I have a little c-section pouch in trying to get rid of. I should probably wait until I've had the second baby before spending money on improving it though (can't believe I'm even saying that with a 5ish month old 😂)
