Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Weighed in with a 1.5k loss in a week Smile

Celebratory wine tonight HmmWine

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 29/05/2020 18:18

751 cal and 23g carbs. And an hour walk at the pace of a 7 year old.

bluepixie · 29/05/2020 18:24

Saw my parents first time in months today. All over 2m away and took our own picnic As a result ended on
1000 and 40 carbs (should have eaten less but it was there tasty and we were having fun. Excuses :/ )
Done 15000 steps at least....

bluepixie · 29/05/2020 18:46

Ps re taking a week off

I took 2 off and have put on 5 pounds which is just so depressing. I wish I hadn’t! I feel like I’m nearly back to where I started. But I also have no willpower unlike most the ladies here so I can’t do so many weeks in a row! To be fair I was going to give up. But I can’t and I must get to goal! Not looking fwd to scales tmrw as feel like I ate too much today

Postmanbear · 29/05/2020 19:30

Ending on 844 and 39g of carbs. I’ve drunk loads of water today but haven’t done any exercise at all.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 29/05/2020 21:20

Some chocolate happened tonight. At least it was dark and it wasn't as much as it could have been! I think I need to start buying the 85% again. I don't like it as much so I wont eat as much!
Recon I'll end up maintaining when I get to Monday weigh in. That'll be week 5 weigh in so not a catastrophe.

Lostmyunicorn · 29/05/2020 23:01

I haven’t counted today but I reckon I’m probably around 1200. Ate a couple of biscuits.... back on it tomorrow.

Kimlek · 29/05/2020 23:29

Oh dear! First day back calorie counting after 2 months of ‘maintaining’ at my half way point. Who knew peanut butter had such a high carb count?
Fasted til lunch, had cottage cheese and I ear for lunch (no walnuts) 4pm snack was an apple and tiniest dollop of peanut butter. Dinner was gorgeous... Chilli & ginger fish from fast 800 recipe book with sprouting broc & cherry Toms. Also had 3 slimline G&Ts. My carbs are a whopping 87!!! And I’m blaming the peanut butter that I thought was low carb hig protein! 23g carbs in 20g of the stuff. How does that even add up?

Justasecondnow · 29/05/2020 23:53

Well done lightlypoached weigh in day for me too 2lbs down in week 2 down to 10’7. But only been short week to lose weight - moved weigh in day from Monday to Friday. I prefer a pre weekend weigh in. Time for damage limitation!

Good thing about this diet is even if you slip up a bit you’re on pretty low cals, so even 200 cals up means you’re still not exactly going nuts! Looking at you spicy lentil recipe in BSD recipe book calorie counted as a side for 4 and not a main for 2... should have know with 400ml coconut milk the cal count i was used was off!

I hope All that makes sense. Just had two slim line g&ts and it’s gone to my head. Cheers!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/05/2020 00:06

@Kimlek I think your figs are wrong there for the peanut butter. It is calorific but I don't think it is that high carbs?!

I've read the fast800 book today and have just told dh about this 'new' diet that I'm going to try next week Grin

OP posts:
RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 30/05/2020 06:25

@thenewaveragebear1983
@Justasecondnow that is a good point re going over 800 cals but it still not being too crazy.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 30/05/2020 06:45

I'm going to dig out some week 1 willpower and have no chocolate for the next week. I might do one of the meal plans again the week after because I quite enjoyed all the food decisions being made for me.

Kimlek · 30/05/2020 09:31

bear Love your cunning plan!! Yes MFP definitely has the numbers wrong for meridian peanut butter. Can’t possibly be 23g of carbs in 20g of product! I’ll check the tub. It now makes me doubt everything on MFP.
I was inspired by someone else on here to buy some fancy new scales (Renpho from amazon £30) the app measures body fat, sub and visceral plus bone mass, muscle etc etc. it’s given me some extra goals to work towards. Or, resistance training. I don’t really do exercise other than walk the dog. I was playing tennis before lockdown. Anyway, I’m going to read the section in the original book about his exercise plan. But good to know Visceral is in the healthy range.
DH bday today and the girls have made pavlova instead of cake, which I adore so that’s going to be tricky to avoid. We’ll do a bbq for tea and Im following recipes from fast800 so calories etc should be correct. Lunch will be picky bits although I think I’ll do a proper counted salad otherwise I’ll have too much cheese and a rather delicious garlic chutney!
It’s good to be back counting and starting my second phase. And joining you all properly! My goal all through lockdown was to maintain at around 11st. So I’m pretty chuffed to be starting phase 2 at 10st 11 with goal 10st.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 30/05/2020 09:50

Morning people!

@Lostmyunicorn - Think it's important not to feel guilty or ashamed for enjoying food!!

Weighed in this morning: 10st 2lbs - so one pound to go before I am within, 'healthy BMI...'

Not sure about others, but easier for me to diet in warmer weather as don't feel much like eating anyway...

Having gazpacho soup for lunch and salmon with salad for dinner, burgers and chips for DCs

fufulina · 30/05/2020 10:03

Thanks @Postmanbear. Down again this morning (after an inexplicable 0.5kg gain yesterday), so 7.4kg off in total so far and on week 4, day 6.

I’ve been struggling getting enough protein (I track with MFP), so have introduced a protein powder yoghurt thing that I make with DHs protein powder (it’s a flavourless, pure protein one). 30g Greek yoghurt, 50g blueberries, 4 strawberries and half a scoop of powder (15g) whizzed up in the blender - 117 calories, 6g carbs and 17g protein! It means I’ve hit a minimum of 50g every day for the last few days. And is delicious. Almost like a mousse!

I’m edging closer to 80kg which is my self-imposed limit for alcohol. When I get there, I can have a gin and slimline.

Onwards and downwards!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/05/2020 10:14

@Kimlek thanks! I always try to 'hide' the strictness of the plan and the calorie counting really but I think that's really affecting my ability to then stick to plan. I figure, and after reading the book again yesterday, that I actually need to be strict and need to tell the family I'm being strict. I think dh was surprised when I said how much I have gained in lockdown and how unhappy I am about it so he was quite supportive.

Today, we are just having a chilled day. I am taking ds out in a bit to do couch to 5km, but not running myself today. I will do a hiit workout this afternoon if I can be bothered or maybe just yoga. Food: I'm about the have a smoothie to use up a few frozen fruit bags in the freezer, lunch will be salad and dinner will be meat cooked on our raclette and salad again.

I'm all planned for next week, list written. I need to make ds's birthday cake but I will actually make that today and freeze for ease of decoration and also to remove temptation on Monday when I'm in the middle of day 1!

Kimlek · 30/05/2020 10:26

MFP had the decimal point in the wrong place re the carbs in the peanut butter. It’s 2.3g carbs in 20g of product, not 23!! I’m not trusting MFP so moving onto fat secret to see if that’s a bit better. Enjoy the lovely weather everyone!

Gilead · 30/05/2020 10:38

3.5 lbs down this week. I'm happy with that.

Justasecondnow · 30/05/2020 11:01

Well I did my 10k... 11k in the end and enjoyed it, pace decent for me too. Had porridge before, electrolyte drink and a energy gel thing (it was yuck!) so covered all the bases! Happy I can do it low cal/carbs ish with a few tweaks. Thanks for the advice thenewaveragebear1983

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks totally with you on the using the book recipes- if I was using my own a few extras would creep in I think. I have made the odd mistake with the recipes and had a bit more than intended though. More me than the books fault but sometimes I think it could clearer.

Having said that I like the sound of fufulina’s protein smoothie. So might get some protein powder to try it.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. I’m full of the joys on my runners high!

bluepixie · 30/05/2020 11:39

Hi @Kimlek amazing u Maintained and also lost some!! I’m no longer your twin thought measuring 11 today as I put on 5 with my 2 week off . But hopefully will catch up with you soon and get to my goal too which 10.3

Mfp often wrong!!

Just had a lamb mince thing for lunch was which cals but no carbs. Danger zone tonight when the gin comes out

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/05/2020 21:48

All set to start tomorrow. All treats have been 'disposed of' and just finishing the rose wine. I'm really really really determined for this week now. Took my measurements today and will weigh tomorrow morning and then I'm hiding the scales! All family have been briefed and issued strict instructions regarding treats and goodies. I took photos today and I was not happy with what I saw so I'm using that as motivation!

Starting tomorrow. Will run as early as possible because of the heat, just a short one. Then will fast as long as possible. Dinner will he lemon and thyme skewers from the fast 800 book with salad. I'm not shopping till Monday so will make do on what I have in until then.

mumoflittlemice · 30/05/2020 22:20

Hi all, can I join please? I've been skim reading some of your old threads while starting off on my low carb/high fat/ intermittent fasting journey.

I'm about 8 days into doing fast800 with fasting between 16:8 - 20:4 just depending on how the day goes. I weaned myself down for a few days before I started really getting serious, cutting out the obvious carbs (bread, spuds, pasta, chocolate, biscuits etc) and have lost about 5.8lbs so far. It's been ages since I've been able to get under 11st, which used to be unheard of for me unless I had just given birth! Blush This morning I got to 10st 12.6 lbs so that was big for me.

I've been feeling pretty good, actually mostly really good, much to my astonishment and none of the low blood-sugar shakes which I suffered from prior to this WOE especially when dieting. Today however, I really struggled energy wise and ended up having to take a nap on the sofa for 2 hours which is just not a thing I would normally do. Yesterday I was pretty low and tearful too, which I just put down to lockdown crap and this morning in the shower I noticed my muscles were feeling quite achey. Is this 'Keto-flu' do you think and if so, what's the advice from those of you who've experienced this? How long does it go on for?
I read that a small amount of good quality carb can help so I had 2 multigrain crackers with some organic hummus at dinner.

I guess I had got a bit cocky with how well I've been doing as far as sticking to the right foods and how I've been feeling etc. Never in my life did I think I'd be able to fast for these periods of time and feel fine and not get shaky and feel dreadful, but I just haven't.

Anyway if it's ok, I'd like check in with you guys instead of lurking. I've got about a stone to lose now to reach my goal and I really must stick with this through thick and thin, as I think it might be the only thing that I actually can sustain. I've had a really rough couple of years and I want my body, energy and health back; I think this is the way I can achieve it.

MOLM Smile

Kimlek · 30/05/2020 23:22

Hello & welcome @mumoflittlemice I’ve never had keto flu as I don’t think I’ve ever got my carbs low enough for long enough but it does sound like it. Hoping you feel better now.
Agh @Cream123 you’ll be twinning with me very soon I’m sure! I’m pleased you’re back!
Bit of guesswork re calories etc today as trialing ‘fat secret’ rather than MFP and not sure how to put recipes in. Had zero pavlova so v impressed with self. B’fast was a tiny piece of choc bar thing from fast800 recipe book that DD made and apparently only 100 cals. Could have eaten 10 as very yummy. Lunch was picky bits that I ended up skipping. Bravo me as we had lots of cheese and chutneys. Dinner BBQ of burgers from fast800 recipe book; coleslaw from same book, bbq peppers, courgette and corn cob. Plus 2 very large G&Ts. All counted at around 900cals.
Planned the next few days and ordered cluck and collect so should all go to plan. Need to find a replacement for gin!!

bluepixie · 31/05/2020 08:15

Yest was a write off again.
I’ve now got dh promising me to bring no sugar into house (it’s now all except except some dark choc in cupboard) and also no more alchol for 2 weeks as this is when I break.

I’m starting again ....again. And this time I’m doing it! I have nothing coming up in the next 3 weeks till my bday. Date wine night has been cancelled for now. No Chocs cakes or treats in house. so I have NO excuses.

Well done kimlek! That’s good going.

Good luck @thenewaveragebear1983 ! U can do it!

Kimlek · 31/05/2020 09:06

You can do it cream123 as can bear. We all can do this!
If your birthday is in 3 weeks time you are almost my twin cream 🤗
I’m 10.10.0 this am - lowest I’ve been for a long time. I’m fasting til lunch which is picky bits so will have to put things into ‘fat secret’ prior to my mouth. Dinner is another BBQ with drumsticks from the fast800 book, coleslaw from the book, peppers, courgette and corn. So should be a similar count to yesterday (900). I’m going to try to lay off the booze. I’ll walk the dog with eldest DD this evening when cooler. I need to find some free online resistance, toning up exercise that’s not too tough.... if anyone has any ideas please? I still haven’t started Adrienne yoga that I said I would back in Jan. I’m really bad at getting started with any form of exercise.
