Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/05/2020 19:50

@theluggagerules I use one called FatSecret because it doesn't shout at me if I eat under 1000 cals (v rare occurrence anyway)

I've had another good day today. I've found a nice groove that's doing me ok for now. Not counting cals, but not eating anything sugary or any of the big 5 baddies, or snacking. If I can maintain over the weekend employing this strategy then I will be content with that, and will ramp up my efforts after the Bank holiday.

Feeling a bit blue right now as we would have been going on holiday tomorrow. Plus we're desperately trying to claw back our money from our summer holiday and it's not easy. But we will make the best of the week ahead, as best as we can at home!

@Lostmyunicorn - How was it today? Closed the day with 650 calories, and although would happily devour the pizzas and chocolate ice cream I made for the DCs, am just about coping. DH is off to work tomorrow and Sunday and I always find it easier to be strict with myself if he isn't around, if that makes sense?

Lostmyunicorn · 22/05/2020 20:20

I think about 700 cals in total - I can’t be totally exact because I made a pan of Spanish chicken and I’d worked out calories on the basis of having half but I didn’t actually have as much half, I don’t think, (really hard to work out as had chunks of chicken and cannellini beans in and I’m not counting them individually!) Anyway definitely under 800 so that’s ok.

Lostmyunicorn · 22/05/2020 20:21

I managed not to eat any oven chips left over from the DC which is a real bonus

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 22/05/2020 20:46

I've had too much chocolate tonight but at least it wasn't the whole bar like last week!
Think I'll do a fast tomorrow and skip lunch.

Theluggagerules · 22/05/2020 20:53

Thanks @NathanNathan and @thenewaveragebear1983, appreciate it. Anything to make this simpler at the moment

LarryUnderwood · 22/05/2020 23:06

1126 cals and 32g carbs today, but I did a run and overall more than 14k steps so it's been a very active day. Overall I'm happy with that, even though it's over in calories.

lightlypoached · 23/05/2020 09:15

Lovely bday yesterday and not too excessive, well it could have been much more !

Half a bottle of champagne
Half a bottle of white wine
Eggs florentine for breakfast
Picnic lunch - mostly salad but cheese was involved
1 piece of delish chocolate cake
Dinner mostly salad and a bit more cheese. And peanuts.

But 8k steps and a vigorous dance class.

Hell, it's only one day and it was a lot of fun.

Back on it today with eggs for breakfast. Aiming to skip lunch and have a decent dinner.

How's everyone else doing ?

Justasecondnow · 23/05/2020 11:37

Well I made it through yesterday - day 4. Toughest day yet. Got up, like 5 times in the eve to raid cupboards/fridge but every time realised there wasn’t much I could have that would satisfy me and keep under calories.. and far more likely wouldn’t be able to stop. Also managed a very short run in the wind!

Today I’ve had avo and eggs for brekkie and got haloumi for lunch and bolognaise and courgetti for tea. This combo will put me on about 900, probs 1000, after my many cups of tea. But feel alright about it as will run again & really need an easier day after struggling yesterday.

Almost all my meals are from the book so don’t have to calorie/carb count. Never carb counted before and can’t be arsed just yet! But when I do get into that, something like @thenewaveragebear1983’s burgers with cheese and bacon are on the list!

Hope everyone has a good weekend Smile

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 23/05/2020 13:07

@lightlypoached - sounds like a *fun@ day! Smile

@Lostmyunicorn - weighed in this morning at 10st 4lbs, which was a loss of a lb from previous day, but moving forward am going to weigh myself once a week. Took some chicken from the freezer to the refrigerator to defrost, but DH saw them this early this morning and chucked them out as out of date, not realising they came from freezer. Oh well, was looking forward to marinating them for me and DCs.

Gilead · 23/05/2020 13:53

I started today, scrambled an egg with some smoked salmon for breakfast. Was nice. Not had lunch yet.
Also weighed myself and whilst I’m very overweight I’m a stone and a half lighter than I thought I was!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2020 14:11

Some good progress, well done everyone.

I weighed myself this morning and I'd gained a bit but I felt very bloated and imagine it's water retention. I have been eating a fair bit though so maybe it's actual Weight gain? Who knows?!

Lunch today was lettuce, hard boiled egg and blue cheese with a bit of mayo. Dinner tonight is a takeaway Indian but I have already made my choice. I am going to have a tikka stuffed pepper starter and salad; had it last time and it was delicious and plenty filling enough for a main course.

As I said yesterday, I'm just ticking over for the weekend. I actually feel very strong around carbs right now and haven't been tempted at all so I'm confident that come Monday I'll be able to go back to plan. I need to rein in my portion control and start properly tracking again.

Lostmyunicorn · 23/05/2020 14:33

Oh no! Shame about your chicken! Good loss though. I’m aiming to weigh myself every 3/4 days. So far at midweek check check I’d lost 4 llbs since Monday. I ran 5.5k early this morning. I had 2 eggs with asparagus and tomatoes for lunch. I’ve meal planned dinners for the week ahead - lunch is always some variation on a huge mixed salad. Now I’m off to the supermarket. I’ll weigh myself tomorrow and report back!

Gilead · 23/05/2020 20:55

I did 916 calories today. Considering it’s my first day and I have over five stone to lose I don’t think that’s bad.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2020 21:18

I've had an ok day now and am all planned for the week ahead. I need a focussed week. I've worked out my exercise (as dh is off this week I can stick to set times) and food. Just need to actually stick to it now! I will add to this meal plan either 2 eggs at lunch or will make a little 'grazing box' with salad bits and protein all weighed out and counted in advance. The hardest thing for me is fasting when the others are eating but I think I'm just going to have to force myself to do it and see how I get on. I feel bad not eating when they are eating lunch but actually I wonder if they would even notice?!

807cal and 45g carbs

Lostmyunicorn · 23/05/2020 22:02

I’m closing the day at 700 which I think is good going for a weekend.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 24/05/2020 08:54

Weighed in a day early and I've done it! 1st gone in 4 weeks! Very pleased with myself.

Aiming for another 8-10 lb off over the next 4 weeks. Might then switch to 5:2 or might carry on for the full 12, I'll see how I get on.

NathanNathan · 24/05/2020 09:03

Well done RedLips! Amazing result.

Justasecondnow · 24/05/2020 09:15

@RedLips yay we’ll done! Good motivational fodder for those at the start.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 24/05/2020 09:16

Thanks @NathanNathan I've had the odd moment off plan but nothing like how I just to eat everything that wasn't nailed down!

7lb to get back to my pre Christmas low (not been that since November!)

NathanNathan · 24/05/2020 10:07

I haven't posted my week 7 weigh in. I had a not great couple of days Tuesday/Wednesday which meant I was only half a pound down on Thursday weigh in, but I've reset myself and now today I'm another 3 lbs down half way through week 7.

Total over 6.5 weeks is 1st 5lbs. Smile
