Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Sorry, end of week 6/start of week 7 weigh in.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 24/05/2020 10:22

Great work @NathanNathan!

Gilead · 24/05/2020 10:32

Brilliant, @NathanNathan!

Kimlek · 24/05/2020 10:53

@thenewaveragebear1983 I’m wondering how you make your celeriac chips. Dyou boil first then fry or oven cook or something else please? Are they crispy?
I’m also rather impressed that your Indian takeaway does something that sounds so delicious as tikka chicken stuffed pepper!!

NathanNathan · 24/05/2020 10:59

Thank you! Also interested in the process of celeriac chips...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/05/2020 11:41

Just cut the celeriac into chip shapes and drizzle with oil. I use Schwartz chip seasoning (or Nando's peri peri chip powder) although that does have sugar in - but you use such a small amount I see it as a worthy sacrifice; or wedge seasoning (buy a sachet, I make a sachet last 3-4 batches) then oven bake. They are slightly wetter than a traditional wedge but you can get the edges quite crispy in a hot oven with oil.
The best chip replacement though is halloumi fries. Just cut it into thin chip shaped and shallow fry in some oil until crispy, (fry them longer than you really think they need if that makes sense) but you have been warned. They are amazing.

@NathanNathan - incredible!

@Lostmyunicorn - was fairly gutted about the freezer thing, mostly as the only thing left was a block of tofu which is difficult to get excited about.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/05/2020 11:44

@Kimlek I always use the starter menu for Indian takeaway, often things are drier (eg tandoori seasoned, dry grilled) rather than in the heavy sauces. Definitely worth checking if yours does anything similar. The starters are huge and easily enough for a main plus I have salad etc. Then as there's no sauce, there's no need to have bread etc.

@NathanNathan amazing work, well done Star

Well done @NathanNathan too! It’s my first week weigh in tomos and I’m equally excited/ nervous..!

Re. the celeriac chips do they still have the celery taste? @thenewaveragebear1983
Celery is my nemesis. The one veggie I can’t stand!

Big yes to halloumi though. Had it grilled yesterday. Delicious!

Postmanbear · 24/05/2020 12:56

I’ve been following the thread for a while and have finally finished the book and plan to start tomorrow.
You’ve all done so brilliantly on it, I’m very impressed!

I have menu planned the first 4 days, feel really daunted by the very small amount I am going to eat! 1 stone to lose to get to pre baby weight.

Kimlek · 24/05/2020 13:01

Thanks bear I hate peeling celeriac so haloumi is a much better option but no doubt calorific!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/05/2020 13:58

Oh yes, the halloumi is calorific. And Moreish. I am such a bad influence, don't listen to me

@NathanNathan that's brilliant progress

I weighed today and I'm 0.9 kilo down 😬

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 24/05/2020 18:36

880 cal and 16carbs. Was going to be less cals but I forgot to budget for the cooking oil.

agteacht · 24/05/2020 19:02

Amazing @NathanNathan 🥰

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/05/2020 19:43

Had a good day today. Weighed in this morning at 10.10.5 which is now my official starting weight for my relaunch of fast800 this week. Lunch I had chorizo, avocado and cheese, and dinner was roast gammon and salad. I am having a g&t tonight though, but have made it very clear to dh that despite him being 'on holiday' I am not drinking this week. I have done a massive 23k Steps today (13k was a run) and I am exhausted and aching all over!

This week I'm planning some nice simple meals and some long fasts and have factored in some running and also some hit workouts and yoga. I'm looking forward to it. Not weighing myself now until Friday so it will be interesting to see what I can achieve in a week and will hopefully kickstart myself to get back on track for the longer term. My goal is ideally to lose 1 more stone but for now, just to get to 10.3 which was my previous lowest weight would be good.

Anyway, have a good bank holiday Monday and week ahead everyone!

I had a good day... then I ate a bar of dark chocolate. So finished on 1426cal and and 38g carbs.

Wish I had the willpower to stick to this! How bad is that do you think? Carbs aren’t desperately high I guess?

waterproofed · 24/05/2020 22:25

Hello, checking back in as week 5 is nearly done, but I had a big binge in week 4 (3k kcal in a day) and another two (2K kcal Sat + Sun) this week.

Will weigh in tomorrow but I know it will be a gain.

I’d love to have a nice disciplined week this week to see if I can move the scales in the right direction. I don’t even necessarily want to lose any more weight - just maintain my loss and stop sugar bingeing.

About to get my third period in lockdown, so that can’t be helping things.

I stopped using sweetener a couple of days ago as I think it was leading me to binge and stopped drinking my zero calorie sports drinks because I think I’m having too much salt in my diet and therefore retaining water. Still doing yoga but not getting out of the house much which might be part of my problem. I probably need some cardio, so it’s time to pick up running again.

agteacht · 24/05/2020 22:30

I wouldn't be too stressed about it @Whattheladybirdsaidnext - carbs still good as you say. I average about 1000-1100 cals a day over the course of a week and continue to lose. Not saying everyone should do that but keeping carbs low is the key if the cals creep up.

Sounds like lots of people are very determined - here's to a good week!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 24/05/2020 22:44

Thanks, I hope you are right! I just got back to the weight I was before my last binge!!
I will weigh in tomorrow and see what happens. And go to bed now! It was tiredness that was the killer. Night everyone...

Justasecondnow · 25/05/2020 08:28

First weigh in after week 1 - 6lb down! 11.1 to 10.9. So happy with that normally takes me 4 weeks of dieting. I know a lot will be water and it will slow. But it gives me the motivation for week 2.

Good luck for the other weigh ins today.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/05/2020 08:59

@Justasecondnow brilliant well done Star

Week 1 over for me now and after initially feeling unmotivated by the scales not moving it's a 4lb loss for me . I'm over the moon with that as I was always low carb so I don't think much of that would be water. I think the most important thing is that finally my scales are moving in the right direction this lockdown when everything else has failed. The first 4 days were really tough . I had dreadful headaches but I found as soon as I increased my water intake they lifted on day 5 ( I actually thought I was drinking a ton of water but when I was mindful about it I realised I wasn't) . I feel great at the moment very energised.
