Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Day 56 and closing the kitchen at 928 calories and 37g carbs. Thanks to everyone for the supportive messages, I think I'm back on track now. With any luck the scales will eventually be kind to me again. 🙂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/05/2020 21:37

@PhoenixMama hi! How are you? Don't worry, We're not all behaving ourselves here Blush!

I'm all set for the week ahead though , menu is planned out using a keto cookbook and tomorrow's food is all calorie counted and pre-calculated. I am dreading the scales tomorrow but it has to be done. This is the best time in my cycle for some serious focus so I need to capitalise! Made a red cabbage coleslaw (all cal/carb counted) and a quinoa and pea salad (ditto) so tomorrow's food will be that, plus roast chicken. I have made a chia seed smoothie pot with flaxseed and alpro yog which is setting overnight. I plan to save that for a supper/pudding but may have it at lunch if I get hungry.

Feeling motivated!

Hi all

An okay-ish weekend for me... let's see

Made this - it is so nice!!!

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 04/05/2020 07:38

Morning everyone.
I had an excellent first week, I went over cals a bit a few days (not more than 1000 though) and I was surprised how easy it was to stop snacking when I normally can't stop eating!

AF arrived yesterday morning but my first full week weigh in this morning shows 7.5 lb off so I am ecstatic about that! Here's to another good week!

Teaismynewfriend · 04/05/2020 07:58

Morning all
An update on my moderating experiment of mixing up fast days, sensible days and treat days into the week. It absolutely does not work for me. I can't go in and out of the zone, once I'm out of the zone I just can't get back in. So, it has to be all in.
At least I know!! If moderation was for me I wouldn't be overweight!!! Grin

I am using up leftovers today (bsd friendly ones) and will do my meal plans for the rest of the week. I need 3 meals but will keep them small and no snacking.

I'm so impressed with you all! Keeping going at this time of so much mental stress.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/05/2020 08:26

Weighed in this morning, it was a lot. I am very close to going up a stone bracket and I do not want that so more determined than ever now.

It's the weekends; they've always been tricky but right now they are a free for all! But I can definitely focus during the week so that's my first goal. Will deal with the weekend when it comes!

Morning everyone

Sorry for dropping off! I was getting very annoyed at myself! It was working doing 5 on plan and 2 off . I was loosing and I could get back onto it. But as the weight cane off quickly at start is now slowed down and I’m finding it harder to get back into the swing...

Anyways I succeeded over weekend to have sat night off but then yest I got st back on it. And I’m back in zone. So maybe the key is only 1 day off as 2 was becoming 3/4/5. I also think that it’s getting harder to loose so I have to be strict and a few bad days is setting me back now. So time to refocus.

Anyway I’ve not lost anything last week (actually put on a pound :(. ) . No surprise. So back yest was in at
900 and 30 carbs
Today hoping for 800 and 31 carbs

Weigh in Friday. Hopefully see a move! Made fish pie for dinner with celeriac it looks lovely!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 04/05/2020 12:21

I’m back. The weekend was a terrible, but I can’t slide off the wagon completely, so this is me getting back on. I know the next day or so will be really hard... but I can do it. Lots of positive thought!

WellHurrahAndHuzzah · 04/05/2020 12:27

Day 3.

9 stone 4.6.

Meal plan: feta salad for lunch. Curried parsnip soup for dinner. Milk in tea / coffee.

bluepixie · 04/05/2020 16:58

Kitchen closed
924 and 34 carbs
Too many calories but have started potty training and it drove me to dark choc!!!

NathanNathan · 04/05/2020 17:11

@thenewaveragebear1983 @waterproofed @agteacht @Whattheladybirdsaidnext and anyone else who gave kind words and great suggestions when I was fed up last week - thank you Daffodil I really do appreciate it.

I've managed to make myself continue, the ate two wraps and four crackers (nothing in them, just the plain wrap and plain crackers) day was Thursday last week, since then I've stuck to under 37g carbs and under 900 cals every day, this morning as a reward I'd put on a pound.

It's actually starting to defy logic. I'm not expecting answers, I'm happy that I seem to be fixing my binging habits, but I do wonder how to long to wait before admitting defeat.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 04/05/2020 18:14

Finished 731cal, 13g carbs

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 04/05/2020 18:17

Any chance it’s hormonal and you are retaining water?

NathanNathan · 04/05/2020 18:21

Don't think so, mid cycle. Maybe I need to really make the effort to get cals under 800 and carbs under 30?

agteacht · 04/05/2020 18:26

Oh no @NathanNathan
Remind us, it's week 4 you're in now? Could you have a couple of days with carbs under 30g to see? I don't see why you're gaining / plateauing though. My only advice really would be to keep going. I'm sure more water would help but I'm never very good at drinking water myself. I can see why it's getting difficult for you, you deserve a whoosh!!!

NathanNathan · 04/05/2020 18:29

Yes week 4 and still 15 stone (6 stone overweight) so not that last little bit or anything.

How many glasses of water a day do people get to? Today I've had 4 or 5 and going to toilet very frequently...

agteacht · 04/05/2020 18:30

Congrats @RedLipsAndRosyCheeks on a great first week result.

AF has also arrived for me, meaning my periods are definitely back now post pregnancy. A 31 day cycle which due to my PCOS never happens, generally much longer. So here's hoping this sort of regularity will continue helped by this way of eating I genuinely believe.

agteacht · 04/05/2020 18:32

@NathanNathan annoyingly I think all you can do is persevere a bit longer as I don't think there's anything you're not doing right :(

I'm rubbish at drinking water so am interested to hear what others drink too!

NathanNathan · 04/05/2020 18:44

I've decided I just need to be even stricter, make sure I am under 800 and not over, and under 30g of carbs and record every glass of water.

I'll report back in a week!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 04/05/2020 18:47

I try and get 2-3 glasses of water (very tall glasses, 600ml sort) cup of tea, 2-3 coffees (depends on calories for the milk, I drink black tea) then hot squash in the evening or apple tea and another glass of water.

CiorstanMI · 04/05/2020 19:34

Weigh in for the end of week 8 is 66kg (10st 5.5lb) which means I'm back to where I was about 2 weeks ago, but at least the scales have started moving again. That's a loss of 17.5lbs in 8 weeks.

@NathanNathan as you'll see from the above I know how frustrated you must feel as I've effectively stood still for nearly 2 weeks and nearly gave up entirely a few days ago. However, it seems to have started moving again so do hang on in there. I'm sure you'll start losing again if you persevere.

Day 57, closing the kitchen at 832 calories and 53g carbs.

agteacht · 04/05/2020 19:42

Oohhh @NathanNathan just had a thought, what about measurements, have you taken any?

@CiorstanMI yay well done the scales will keep rewarding you from here I know it. I'm sorry if I've asked you before and forgotten but what weight are you targeting?

I weighed my little 4 month old this morning, she is getting so heavy! She weighed exactly the amount I have lost since starting this almost 6 weeks ago (15.2lb). It was a bit eerie! Also makes me appreciate what I've lost as I really struggle to carry her around for too long. 6 weeks ago I was carrying that within my own body plus her as well!

NathanNathan · 04/05/2020 19:42

Well done @CiorstanMI!!

Are you moving to maintenance now you've done 8 weeks?

Your willpower to keep going is amazing, I will think of you when I want to crack!

agteacht · 04/05/2020 19:43

Pressed send too soon. What I was about to say is @CiorstanMI you need to find something that weighs 17.5lb. You'll be astounded!

whensmynexthol1day · 04/05/2020 19:53

@CiorstanMI we have pretty much identical stats! I stared at 74.5kg and now 66.6 after 8 weeks. Lost 0.4kg last week so hope this isn't the start of some sort of stall. Really keen to keep losing as close as I can to 1kg per week. What is your goal? I want to get to 56kg so will be continuing on plan for a while...
