Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Well done everyone. I agree about doing measurements, it can be very motivating if the scales aren't moving.

I've had a good day today. Food excellent, carbs fairly high as I had my overnight chia pot thing but it was nice and was a good mid afternoon pick me up. I kept busy all day painting a VE Day mural in poster paint on my garage door!

In answer to the water question, I drink loads. Gallons! Probably 5-6 pints a day, although I do exercise a lot so probably need more. It's just a habit I've got into to down a pint of water a few times a day. I drink 3 cups of coffee too but nothing else.

Thanks @agteacht and @NathanNathan. I like your tip about finding something that weighs 17.5lbs. I suspect my baby niece weighs about that by now but until lockdown ends I'm not going to get a chance to hold her ☹️ so I'll have to make do with bags of sugar or flour.

I'm going to keep going to the 12 week mark if I can because I want to lose 30lbs, that will take me to 9.5st, so I've still got a way to go.

Hey, @whensmynexthol1day, yes we are stats twins aren't we. It's nice to know someone else is losing at a similar rate to me, it makes me feel I must be managing reasonably well. Well done us 🙂

bluepixie · 04/05/2020 20:18

Ps glad To hear af arrived @thenewaveragebear1983

Yes well done @CiorstanMI I also often think of u when I want to wobble (today included!)
Stayed strong Halo but wish I could eat Cake

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/05/2020 20:23

You could load a rucksack with 17.5lbs of tins or bottled water and carry it round the house for a bit. You'll be amazed how heavy it is. We do it at bootcamp, with dumbbells to show how much weight we've lost, and then run laps of the field.

So started this week, easily eating within 16:8.
Logging calories on MFP, cutting carbs, thus week averaged about 1000 calories per day, due to several in and around 800 then a bit of a disaster today involving a chocolate croissant.
Dropped 5lbs in a week so quite excited! Got another couple of stones to shift so looking for company.
Had to invest in some Fybogel today, any alternatives/suggestions/reassurance that my reluctant digestion is just in shock?

LarryUnderwood · 04/05/2020 22:00

Checking in at 859 cals and 44g carbs. Last week was my 'easing in' week so I'm officially kicking off the 8 weeks from today. Weekend was really hard and I went a bit crazy on the booze - and then snacks- but in my defence it was my work leaving drinks and other celebrations. Nothing going on now so I should have a clear run. Still, how do you guys get through the weekend without slipping?

WellHurrahAndHuzzah · 05/05/2020 07:16

Day 5.

9 stone 5.

No idea what I'm going to eat today, which seems like a bad idea!! Perhaps some tofu and veg miso soup? And then scrambled eggs for tea.

Keep going folks!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/05/2020 07:37

@RobinsonXmas hi, welcome. You can use things like chia seeds or flaxseeds in things to increase your fibre, plus obviously the usual like plenty of water and green veg.

@LarryUnderwood oh yes, the weekends are my absolute nemesis. I find I eat earlier than weekdays which sets me off eating, and then by the evenings I've lost the plot. I suppose the trick to success is to plan really well and treat it like a normal weekday as much as you can.

I had a great day yesterday and I'm all set for another one today. I've worked out my food/calories in advance. Lunch is salad, Dinner is chicken satay skewers with PB, garlic and lime. I've made my chia seeds again as a snack/pudding. Another day keeping busy; some gardening to do, will go for my run this morning, and I really need to do some yoga today as I'm all tight. Then work this evening - so a very busy day for me!

Have a great day everyone!

Today
Eggs spinach and my low carb bread - ps it’s only on Ocado but it’s really quite tasty and 3.5g carbs
Lunch feta salad
Dinner chicken curry with cauliflower rice

Weigh in tmrw and sat am - I’ve decided to have 2 weigh in days and only 1 evening off a week as ow my weekends are massively setting me back!

LarryUnderwood · 05/05/2020 11:16

@thenewaveragebear1983 yes planning is key. Weekends we tend to have a takeaway as treat and I find it so hard to resist, plus I really crave wine.

However, had a good day yesterday and weighed myself this morning - 3lbs down despite Friday-Sunday basically being a train wreck. So very happy with that and feeling more determined today!

waterproofed · 05/05/2020 12:22

Hello fellow fasters, just checking in with you to share my plateau. I ordered some new fangled scales which measure body fat - will update my weight and all the stats when they arrive.

Day 18 and I think this is by far the longest I’ve ever gone without sweet treats in my life. My skin looks so much better - I did not realise so many of my breakouts were entirely self inflicted. Better still, my cravings are gone. I had some cake over the weekend as it was DS’s birthday and I could honestly take it or leave it. It’s as though my sweet tooth is finally broken!

Very much enjoying this WOE even if my weight is stagnant for now.

@thenewaveragebear1983 I am addicted to the Secret World of Slimming Clubs pod. Love all the banter. Also, thank you for all the running tips. It’s only Tuesday and I already managed to squeeze in 10K over the last couple of days. Who even am I?

Nice work waterproofed I would loooove to break my sweet tooth!

I have been remotivated by listening to R4 World at One where they discussed inflammation in the body caused by obesity.

Started today being as strict as possible: 16:8, have planned food to under 800 and 30g of carbs.

Trying a week of this to get out of my plateau hopefully!

WellHurrahAndHuzzah · 05/05/2020 13:57

Urgh well I crashed and burned a bit this morning.... Ate WAY too many walnuts and mature cheddar for breakfast :-/ it was like I just couldn't stop!!

I'm going to try and skip the scrambled eggs I had planned for later and just stick to the tofu and veg miso soup.

I felt SO fantastic yesterday!! Why did I do this?!

As long as I don’t crack and have fish and chips with the rest of my family, I will be ending on 757cal and 18gcarbs. The plan is that I am leaving for a walk as soon as my husband walks in with the food and will be back to find he has cooked my dinner and cleared up all the evidence!! I’m purposefully keeping everything as low as I possibly can because of my extravagantly terrible weekend and it’s week 3. Fingers crossed anyway.

Ooooh wonder what the deleted post was???!

Thanks @agteacht!

I'm struggling with tiredness a bit more this week but it's AF week so that never helps. Also, lockdown wise, I'm a bit up and down at the moment. Sticking to plan though so I'm hoping for a 2 or 3 lb loss for week two.

@thenewaveragebear1983 and @waterproofed I'm a fan of the podcast too. Katy was my inspiration for the fast 800, I'm debating joining patreon if she does the stupid slimming club zoom!!

whensmynexthol1day · 05/05/2020 18:16

@waterproofed. It's good you're still really motivated- I'm so terrible with a plateau I get so de-motivated so quickly! Things always shift though eventually when you stay on track.

Finishing my day on 682kcal and 32g carbs. Had a weird day today of just not feeling very hungry- very different to yesterday when I was absolutely ravenous - picking at the kids leftovers etc. Long may it continue!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/05/2020 18:43

@RedLipsAndRosyCheeks me too! They are literally the highlight of my week. I also love Jo's podcast, i secretly recorded my boyfriend. It's hilarious.

I added some mayonnaise.... so 851cal and 19g carbs

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 05/05/2020 19:36

@thenewaveragebear1983 I've not listened to that one, I'll add it to my list!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/05/2020 20:16

Closing a bit high on both cals and carbs today. Various small amendments to my proposed menu, but they all add up don't they. I did do 15k steps and went for a 6km run.

Tomorrow I am not running, but I really need to do my yoga and do some strength/body weight stuff, and will probably do a walk with the dc in the afternoon. I've made broth today which will do my lunch tomorrow, then will have my chia pot mid afternoon and dinner will be....not sure. I have planned, but can't remember!

In response to whoever upthread said about cheese; you will not probably believe this but cheese is/can be highly addictive. Something in it can mimic the effect of opiates on our brains and can mean that you find you cannot stop eating it. I find this especially if I eat cheese on an empty stomach (not often these days because I try to avoid dairy) but I definitely have noticed this and that's how I found this fact out because I was searching for why!

OP posts:
LarryUnderwood · 05/05/2020 21:25

Closing the kitchen on a slightly high 1045 cals and 55g carbs. However I did nearly 12k steps, a fair amount of which was playing tennis and football with the kids so I have definitely had an active day.

LarryUnderwood · 05/05/2020 21:27

@thenewaveragebear1983 yes it is so easy to eat an enormous amount of cheese without really noticing, that's interesting about the effect on the brain.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/05/2020 06:51

I'm 3lbs down this morning since restarting on Monday so i'm pleased with that especially as yesterday was not a total success. I've planned out the calories for today and I'm determined to have as close to 800 day as possible!
