Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Closing the kitchen at 832 calories and 50g carbs on day 38.

Teaismynewfriend · 16/04/2020 06:54

Good morning
I'm 3lb down, v pleased
But today I really need to be less grumpy, especially with the kids who are themselves grumpy and miserable!! I think I'm going to try 2 meals instead of 3, hopefully that'll be a bit easier.

Where we live (mainland Europe) it looks like lockdown is going to start easing off from the end of April onwards, so in a way that provides a bit of motivation. I'll need to start fitting more easily into my spring/summer wardrobe in a few short weeks!!

Hope everyone is doing ok
Have a good day!!

BeeHopeful · 16/04/2020 08:20

Hi all, new to the thread and to Fast 800 - having lost about 15kg last year through stress (far from ideal I know!), lockdown has royally screwed me and I've put on 6kg.

I've got a pack of the shake to use for breakfast and possibly lunch as I'm fairly disorganised with shopping this week (and can't go out again until the next "big shop").

How do you figure out the ideal total carbs per day? Is there a set limit or is it based on individual stats?

Using MyFitnessPal to track cals etc. Today will be a cup of tea for breakfast, a shake for lunch and chicken breast with broccoli and spinach for tea. For emergency snacks if I have cals left, cheese or Greek yoghurt.

Wish me luck - 11kg to lose Blush

Ok my Lo-dough has arrived! I have 2, what should I make @Cream123??

OP posts:
Teaismynewfriend · 16/04/2020 12:14

Good luck @BeeHopeful!!

I have a similar amount to lose. This plan has quick results if you can stick with it, which is really motivating!
My food today:
Bulletproof coffee for breakfast, made with fresh ground beans and 1tsp coconut oil
Omelette with leftover cabbage and Cheddar cheese plus one apple for lunch
I couldn't get through until lunch without a snack so I had a babybel

Has anyone else tried coffee with coconut oil, and if so does it have the benefits that it is supposed to? Ie speeds up metabolism

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/04/2020 12:34

Welcome @BeeHopeful!
@Teaismynewfriend I've never tried the coffee/oil thing, it just doesn't appeal to me I'm afraid

@thenewaveragebear1983 make a pizza! Put the red pasata sauce or wotever u use till edge of the base as it gets dry in over
Top with loads of cheese
Then wotever toppings

In for 7 mins! Yummy pizza. I needed 2 for dinner to fill me :)

Enjoy!

Af came today. So not very hungry which is helpful. Planning to be in at 800 and 33 carbs.
Will weigh on sat. Think I’ll be stay the same tbh as yest I wasn’t great but feeling guilty for last 2 days so will be focussed.

Just wish I had the focus @CiorstanMI has!

bluepixie · 16/04/2020 18:17

858 and 33g carbs
Will not eat the chocolate in the cupboard!

CiorstanMI · 16/04/2020 19:03

Day 39, closing the kitchen at 851 calories and 53g carbs. But really, really want to eat a biscuit! Fortunately DH has them all hidden away so I should be quite safe.

gigi556 · 16/04/2020 19:19

Lurking on here as thinking of starting this... is there more than one support thread? I'm confused.
@Teaismynewfriend I did the bulletproof coffee thing a while back (2013ish). I tried it a good couple of weeks and didn't get on with it. Was too hard on my stomach and didn't really notice the benefits. I read it's often more beneficial for men???

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/04/2020 19:25

There's other chat threads about particular questions but I think this one is the main ongoing support thread @gigi556

Feel free to ask any questions!

Looks great! Love the cat eyeballing it in the background Smile

agteacht · 16/04/2020 22:54

Oh that looks amazing!! My two lo-dough are due tomorrow! I think I'll have to go for pizza... the excitement 😂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/04/2020 07:15

@agteacht I'm going to save my 2nd one for pizza I think.

I had a good day yesterday. I did have 1 biscuit at 7pm, don't even know why! But Otherwise my food was good. I was quite heavy on the scales this morning though, I do deserve it (lingering from last week's bad behaviour)! Plus due on tomorrow so I am probably retaining a fair bit of water.

Today I am going for a run, and then the forecast is a bit wet and cold so will probably get some housework done. Food will be salad for lunch (maybe with egg mayo?) and for dinner I have a real hankering for some calamari with pea mash!

Hi- can I join in please? I have dabbled a bit with this but have never managed to stick for longer than 2 weeks. I am 5’7’ and could do with loosing at least 5 stone, and I am denial about the fact I am a zlsize 18.... so my first challenge is to get back into my size 16 jeans. I hoping that joining you all will help me to stick properly to the diet! I know that I can’t stay the weight I am, but I am finding it hard to motivate myself because it seems such a huge huge unattainable journey. But long journeys have to start somewhere, right? And every kilo is a kilo in the right direction....

NathanNathan · 17/04/2020 11:45

Hi @Whattheladybirdsaidnext.

I'm in a similar boat. I've done this before and lost a stone and a half before I caught norovirus which thoroughly derailed my attempt.

I'm also a size 18, starting at 16st, aiming for 9 and a half right right at the end! But my first aim is to get out of the obese category, which will happen at about 14 and a half stone.

It's day 9 and I'm really hoping to be able to keep going this time. Lockdown is helping a bit as so much temptation is removed! So far I'm 6 pounds down.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 17/04/2020 12:05

Well done! For me I think the lock down is mixed.... my 5 and 7year olds like to bake.... and have lots of Easter chocolate! Also, it makes me anxious, and I have a massive history of stress eating. I’m hoping reporting back here gives me the accountability I need. School next week will help too when we have some routine. Fingers crossed anyway. I know I will feel better once I’m in this, and I know the hunger goes away. And there will be no birthday cake, or meals out, or my mother hanging around commenting on what I’m eating....!! We can do this... right?!

bluepixie · 17/04/2020 12:20

I’m also 5 ft 7. I struggle to stick at it continually and end up going on and off every few days tbh. I’m terrible. The weight is coming off but it’s just slower than people on here who have more focus than me!! I am challenging myself to 2 weeks in a row of following it from this Sunday - I’ve only ever done a whole week! I’d prob get to close goal if I just did that!!!
I started 11.9 and am now 10.13 but taken me 7 weeks (with every weekend off and 1 week where I was ill where I ate everything in sight). I’m aiming to 10.3 which is what I weighed on my wedding day! But im being so slow about it I’m not annoying myself

Anyways on a better note I missed brekkkie and am hoping for an ultra low calorie day today as tmrw I’m having my date night in. Gonna sensibly but I will be having processo. And then on Sunday my 2 week challenge starts! I’m hoping the board will keep me on the st and narrow

Hope u liked ur lo dough !

NathanNathan · 17/04/2020 13:19

@Cream123 I do think it's much harder when you don't have lots of lots to lose. It seems to come off better when you're 5/6 stone over like me. I'm sure when I get down to within a stone or so it will be tough. And it's coming off - you are doing it!

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext I'm also terrible for stress eating but I've largely managed so far, with one slice of banana cake reaction to being sad.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 17/04/2020 13:38

That’s impressive... I’ve been known to eat a whole banana loaf! I think today I need to accept calories under 1000 and carbs under 70g. Mostly because i only decided to climb back on the wagon mid morning and had already had breakfast. I will stick to the 800/

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/04/2020 16:02

Yep- barely seen 16yo DD all week. I take the boys out for a walk and come back to this:

Oh wow! They are beautiful! Finished on 858cal and 60g carbs- respectable under the circumstances.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/04/2020 18:42

Beautiful maybe. But not really helpful as I'm trying to try to be good at least One Day this week.

Just said to Dh, I can't believe it's the weekend again. I cannot keep eating rubbish like this. My food is generally good but for about 1/2 an hour a day I turn into this horrible little tapeworm That just shovels food into my mouth, and not even nice treats. Just horrible sugary crap! Why do I do this???? I am very hormonal, AF did tomorrow and especially hormonal because of all the sugar, it's a vicious circle.

To be fair, my food has actually been really good today so far and I have done 17k steps (inc a run) and some yoga.
Gah! I will really try harder with my food next week I promise. GrinI just need something to do when that urge strikes to make me step back and walk away rather than be like 'ooops, there's cake in my mouth..'

CiorstanMI · 17/04/2020 19:09

Well it's day 40 and I'm closing the kitchen at 789 calories and 35g carbs. I seem to have had a very good day today but largely because there isn't anything carby (or appealing Grin) to eat in the kitchen. Saved by an empty fridge!
