Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Morning everyone. Official day one for me!
Those of you who are excersizing how did you build it back into your lives. I used to be a gymnast, then an aerobics instructor so fitness has always been a huge part of who I am. But the problem is I only know how to exercise when I’m already fit! Now I am the heaviest I have ever been and I just don’t know how to train. Any tips from those of you that started from zero?
Sending strength and determination to everyone!!

Lndnmummy · 06/04/2020 10:00

@thenewaveragebear1983 thanks so much for those pictures!! 😭 My God you look awesome.

bluepixie · 06/04/2020 15:20

agteacht · 06/04/2020 15:35

Wow somehow missed the pics, is that you on the right now @thenewaveragebear1983 ?! You look AMAZING
#goals

@Lndnmummy I didn't exercise for the best part of a year because I was pregnant. I used to enjoy spinning before that so I just chucked myself straight back in it. I went to a class for a few weeks before the lockdown. I was the slowest and least fit there for sure!
Then just before lockdown I bought a second hand spin bike and I signed up to Peloton which is currently offering a 90 day free trial (across all sports they do, not just spinning - I would totally recommend it). So I've done a spin class via the peloton app 6 out of 7 days a week for the last three weeks. I do the same class frequently so that I can improve at that as I know what the workout looks like. So basically I would recommend choosing a sport you know you enjoy and finding an online class and just doing it consistently. You'll be back into it in no time. It does wonders for my frame of mind.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/04/2020 15:56

@agteacht @Lndnmummy aw thanks. That's me before I started, then the dark blue dress was after re-starting, then yes, the right hand one is me now (although actually was taken last year, but same Weight as now). It's about 3stone loss overall.

Someone asked about exercise. I started from absolute zero, and just decided to do 10 minutes a day on the treadmill. I did actually do pretty much every day and I really think that made it a habit for me much more quickly. It was never so much that I could make an excuse to not do it. Once my fitness improved I started doing longer obviously, but seriously the first time I did 10 minutes I thought I would die. Within about 6 months I ran a half marathon.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/04/2020 18:48

Ok closing up the kitchen today on 1094 cals, 44g carbs, 16k Steps (5km run) - a not s bad day at all and I am determined that I am not going to reopen the kitchen for any late night snacks!

Annoyingly I have a touch of a sore throat, I feel quite 'ear/throat ish' although not unwell at all but it is definitely noticeable, (and have also had a strange mid-cycle bleed today which is very unusual). I can feel myself becoming anxious every time I think about CV so I am just going to put my phone away for the rest of the night and not even consider that this may be Anything else except a tiny sore throat. I think anxiety is a far more common issue for people currently than before and that horrible, low level, anxious overdrive is certainly having an effect on me these days.

How did you get on @Cream123 ?

OP posts:
bluepixie · 06/04/2020 19:14

I’ve not opened the kitchen again and am feeling full.Cals and carbs as above!
Well done @thenewaveragebear1983 don’t open the kitchen cupboards!

CiorstanMI · 06/04/2020 20:13

Day 29 and I'm closing the kitchen at 841 cals and 43g carbs. From the looks of the posts above it seems like we've all had a good day today. Halo

Weighed in this morning for the end of week 4 and I've only lost 0.5 kg since last week (a touch over 1lb), which is a bit disappointing to be honest when I think how little I'm eating (and I do think of it often!). However overall that's a 12.5lb loss since I started so I'll focus on that and keep trudging on. 🙂

agteacht · 06/04/2020 21:26

Keep going @CiorstanMI - I understand that would be frustrating but on the flip side you've nearly lost a stone in under a month!

I had my best cals and carbs day yet, ending on 743 cals and 25g carbs. Basically I didn't eat until 2pm for various reasons so that reduced my intake a lot.

Need another good day tomorrow before my WI on Weds.

bluepixie · 06/04/2020 21:36

@CiorstanMI weight loss is very hard work. And 12.5 pounds is huge. Now the initial weight is off it will slow down but as long as it’s in the right direction! And if u start eating lots it will pile back on so don’t do it (like me!)

Well done @agteacht your in the swing!

I didn’t cave which first day in a while so well done me! Brekkie at 845 so I’ve done my 16 hour fast....I wanna be in the tens soon!

agteacht · 06/04/2020 21:53

Thanks @Cream123
The 10s are so close - you're nearly there!

bluepixie · 07/04/2020 08:13

Just ate brekkie as ds was being quiet for once! Managed 15.5 hours fasting overnight.
Had egg and smoked salmon
Got left over bbq chicken and bbq veg for lunch
Dinner is ready made trout which is low in cals and carbs with some veg.
Have a good day everyone.
Poor borris Sad

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/04/2020 08:21

I'm a pound down today at 10.6.8. I didn't drink enough water yesterday and also did a bit of guesswork in the tracking department, so today the motto is "if you bite it, write it" courtesy of the hilarious podcast the secret world of slimming clubs!

I'm not having breakfast and I will be going for a run shortly (waiting for Dh to get back from his). I have sprayed my oven with cif ready for when I get back because that's my job for today. It's a grim task.
Lunch will probably be a nice little avocado that I've been nurturing all week, he was hard as a stone but I reckon today's the day. With some salad and cold meat.
Dinner- I can't remember what I wrote on the schedule! But it's all planned so will be something on track.

Have a great day everyone. It's so sunny today, I'm looking forward to getting outside.

bluepixie · 07/04/2020 16:59

Closed kitchen on 835 cals and 35 carbs
Am not full full though. But hoping it will be manageable! Had a lovely piece of trout for dinner not had trout before!

NathanNathan · 07/04/2020 17:44

Hello everyone

I've done BSD before about 3 years ago for about 6 weeks and went from 14st 10 to 13st 3.

Started again a week and a half ago at 16st and and have done pretty well, two 1000 calorie days but otherwise on the 800.

I've only lost three pounds in 10 days Sad Last time it was 8 in the first week.

I really hope one of you can help with what I'm doing wrong. I was over 50g carbs for some of last week, so I've changed that.

Any other thoughts on what might be wrong?

bluepixie · 07/04/2020 19:48

Hmm it will come off. Sometimes mine starts and stops...but with those calories it should come off potential things
Period?
High carbs?
Not even water intake?
Waiting for a woosh?
Constipated?!?

Keep going !!!

bluepixie · 07/04/2020 19:49

Are you weighing everything? As it’s hard to guess and u can easily eat 200/300 cals extra without realising

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/04/2020 20:32

I'm closing up the kitchen today on 1200 cals, 60g carbs and a ridiculous 20k steps (I did go for a 6km run but the other 14k were around my house doing jobs!). I am exhausted now!

@NathanNathan there's lots of reasons why it can sometimes feel slow at first, but sometimes it can be as simple as that you aren't retaining as much water as you did first Time round, or that you don't have as much visceral fat. (Those early dramatic weight losses are a combination of water, glycogen stores and visceral fat). Make sure you are eating enough fat and getting enough water.

Tomorrow: more of the same for me. I will try to fast til lunch and have something light when I do; Dd and I were supposed to be going to London to see Hamilton tomorrow so instead we have promised her a dominoes but I have treated myself to a nice ribeye steak which I will have with salad for dinner. I really must do my yoga tomorrow as my leg is starting to twinge, but I should probably not run as I've done 3 days on the trot now. Maybe a hiit workout instead.

NathanNathan · 07/04/2020 20:35

Thanks very much @Cream123 and @thenewaveragebear1983.

I am weighing everything, have made that mistake before.

Will keep going on the fat and water and hopefully will be back with good news!

Really appreciate it.
