Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

GreyBasket · 28/07/2019 08:48

Morning!

@Justtrying be easy on yourself, that wasn't a huge slip of it was 2000 calories. Hope you feel better today.

@thenewaveragebear1983 I used to have a three year old like that 🙈 Every holiday. Hope he's feeling better this morning.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/07/2019 09:55

Thanks everyone, he's right as rain this morning but has an absolute shiner on his forehead- think he had a touch of concussion and probably quite a lucky escape.

Been for my run this morning, nice low carb brekkie of bacon and avocado, and feeling ready for the day!

Justtrying · 28/07/2019 11:57

Basket thanks for the encouragement, got a reasonable nights sleep so brighter today, plus the prospect I'll be home tonight.

Breakfast was a sausage with baked beans. Lunch is an apple with 25g of mixed nuts. Dinner will be curry when i get home.

Riddleofthesands · 28/07/2019 16:48

Glad you little one is ok Bear. I am having a lovely time in Cornwall, weather just right, no one ill and for once I haven’t had a period for the whole holiday, though it is due tomorrow - please be late please be late. I am off plan and will be getting back on it Thursday 1st August when I get home.

Hang in there and good luck to those who weigh in tomorrow.

PhoenixMama · 28/07/2019 21:50

Hi everyone,

Had a stressful weekend of packing, cleaning, filling holes, etc ready for moving. I'm 98% sure that moving is one of the circles of hell!

Bear I'm so glad your DS is ok. That's definitely not a fun way to start a holiday.

My goal for this week is to maintain and not go totally off the rails between moving prep and the 5000-word paper I need to write for my MA course. DD is away from Tuesday so aside from a couple of dinners I should be good!

Justtrying · 29/07/2019 06:11

Phoenix moving is horrendous, and a paper to write you are Supermama.

So pleased just weighed myself and I’ve lost 6lbs. Despite pizza, curry and wine. I’m so pleased. Also I don’t have my usual premenstral bloating.

Aiming to maintain this week and then will have a couple of 800 days at the weekend whilst I’m away with work.

GreyBasket · 29/07/2019 09:15

Wow. I have lost a whopping 1lb 😆😆😆😆

BUT, I am still doing this. I will carry on every day 800 for at least a few more weeks and see what happens. Quite likely it is exercising at the same time that's slowing things down actually weight wise...

@PhoenixMama hang in there! Yes, it is the seventh circle of hell...

@Justtrying that's brilliant!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/07/2019 09:35

Yesterday was an unmitigated carb fest, so starting today with a 10km run and a keto breakfast of bacon, avo, egg, mushrooms and grilled tomato in an effort to redeem myself!

Forecast today is rain rain rain all day so the combination of cabin fever, pmt and the delight that is my children it could be a rather fraught day....!

OP posts:
PhoenixMama · 30/07/2019 10:22

Well I've managed to maintain for the last couple of days which is good, DD goes to the Outlaws today so I'll be able to focus a bit more (I hope!) Weather sucks and it just makes me want all the carbs! Focus Ohoenix, focus!

MozzchopsThirty · 30/07/2019 11:45

First day back yesterday, lost 1kg Smile

I'm reading the book as fast as I can, looking forward to getting some more recipes so that everything is not salad & something or veggies & something 😴😴

Lndnmummy · 30/07/2019 15:25

Hi everyone, I’m thinking about you all and cheering you on from afar. I just haven’t managed to keep in top of the posts! I’m still on plan and down to 63.5kg now (from 76). I have 5kg left and then I’ll move on on maintainence. I have a few holidays coming up so I will need to improvise and aim to maintain and then hit it all again for the final 5kg in September. It all feels very doable. And for those interested, I redid my bloods and I’m prediabetic no more. All results comfortably in the normal range so if there are any lurkers out there. Im a living proof that it works! It really really does. Hugs to all of you, I will catch up properly as soon as I can. X

PhoenixMama · 30/07/2019 16:21

@Lndnmummy That's amazing congrats on your bloods!

I'm falling off the wagon today but I'm ok with it. I made the (fatal) error of having some toast for breakfast - I can't remember the last time I (a) did this and (b) have been so starvingly hungry for carbs.

I'm working late tonight so I'm just going to give myself the day and get back on it tomorrow.

GreyBasket · 30/07/2019 16:53

Evening all.

That's fantastic @Lndnmummy You are an inspiration! Brilliant.

And I hope your run went well @thenewaveragebear1983

Toast sounds just brilliant @Justtrying I am craving really thick crust cheesy pizza myself 🙈 Not given in yet to the carb cravings for pizza but it will happen at some stage 😁 Tomorrow is another day!

The book was fab I thought @MozzchopsThirty I wasn't going to bother with it, but I'm glad I did. I am not sure I have moved beyond the "something and vegetables" and salad for lunch though, but I am making this tonight. I reckon the dates will make a negligible impact.

www.abelandcole.co.uk/recipes/spanish-crusted-trout-with-lemon-date-cauli-couscous

And I feel it will be much more complex flavours than the very basic (albeit good!) recipes in the official recipe book. I will make a version of their wrapped chicken breasts tomorrow night.

GreyBasket · 30/07/2019 16:54

Sorry, @PhoenixMama for the toast!!!

MozzchopsThirty · 30/07/2019 18:38

Help!!!
Can anyone tell me, if I'm going to drink alcohol, what is best to stick to without putting on loads
Is there anything allowed on the plan?

MozzchopsThirty · 30/07/2019 18:55

@GreyBasket that looks delicious
Let me know how it goes and if it's nice?

I am enjoying the book, I like reading all the science behind it, so that it makes sense to me

GreyBasket · 30/07/2019 19:12

@MozzchopsThirty It was wonderful! I only ate less than half though... and then I spent 10 minutes carefully de boning the rest of mine for the cat who just growled at the dog to stay away from it 😆

A few things are different since starting this way of eating, and the main one is I can't seem to eat a lot anymore! Which is good.

Here's my version. The cauliflower couscous was a hit too.

GreyBasket · 30/07/2019 19:15

And I'd stick to the occasional glass of wine myself Mozz. I know proper keto is spirits only, but MM does advocate the Mediterranean red wine.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/07/2019 19:23

Hi all, just checking in. I've done a reasonable job of staying in check today, until about 5pm where I ate loads of rubbish (exhausted after a long day, kids driving me mental, dinner not for ages, ridiculous heavy rain showers all day, period now 2 days late....) so I've probably reached my tdee and had a million carbs. Oh well.

I'm confident that regardless of this week I know now that once I'm home I can get right back on plan and I saw results last week by keeping the carbs really low, so I'm definitely doing that again from Saturday! I think just keeping on track as best as I can with a few treats is the only way to survive a week away!

I'll run again tomorrow morning. The other thing I find is that on holiday I eat breakfast when I rarely do at home and that does seem to just set me off, so I'm going to plan to skip it tomorrow (if I can) and hopefully that will calm my raging appetite at least for a bit!

OP posts:
MozzchopsThirty · 30/07/2019 19:25

Ok I'll stick with a glass of red

@GreyBasket that looks amazing, restaurant standard
I wouldn't dare post a pic of my chicken breast and stir fried veg 🤣

GreyBasket · 30/07/2019 19:28

@thenewaveragebear1983 you're on holiday! With children! One (at least) of which has done a spectacular job of injuring themselves 😆

I take my hat off to you for running at all this week, especially in the rain.

I think you need a glass of wine frankly.

GreyBasket · 30/07/2019 19:32

It definitely wasn't @MozzchopsThirty. And I should have taken a photo of DH's instead of mine as I played around with his plate more prettying it up.

The fish all then all sat on the table as we had a flood next door so I had a random stranger standing dripping wet on the doormat while I phoned for help, which was appalling timing but hey ho.

The cat is looking extremely smug after her share though 😊

MozzchopsThirty · 30/07/2019 19:37

I bet she is 😻
