Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Monday weigh in and I'm 10.8.5 so that's a 3lb loss overall last week. Not too bad all things considered as the weekend was an unmitigated disaster really and I'd be lying if I said I'd had any real grasp on my carb consumption.

Back to basics for this week then: lots of water, running, Keep the carbs low as possible, no snacking. Despite it being a bank holiday weekend we have no real plans ahead, and I'd like to make it through til Monday without having an all out food fest!

Phoenix hope you managed to sleep last night and are feeling brighter today.

Morning all!

Ok weighed in this morning at 179lbs (12.11 stone I think, I'm useless at stone!) and my goal is 168 (12stone). Looking back over the last 7 weeks I've been fluctuating between 184 & 177 constantly. My graph is like rolling hills! Part I think doing the diet for so long that I stagnated and part because for the last 3 weeks I've not been following the plan. So going to try to get back on track.

Only thing is that I've put a lot of social stuff in the diary this week so I'm not constantly on my own (DD's away with her dad & stepmum) but this means I'll be eating basically one meal out a day. I've upped my calories to 1000 a day which should help with being able to eat out but not go crazy. Think I'll record everything regardless and see how we go.

I'm off for a run in a minute, hopefully the fresh air will help and it will be good moving my body (although the area we've moved to is so hilly I'm totally terrified of running on hills!)

Hope everyone has a good day & happy weigh ins!

Mazig · 19/08/2019 10:44

My weigh in was 11 stone 2, so I've lost 6 pounds. Not quite the full first week because I started last Tuesday, but I'd like to weigh in on a Monday. My scales also measure body fat at I'm down 1% which is good because that figure was truly horrifying.

Plan for the week is stick to 800 and try to fit in as much exercise as possible. Trying to work out some quick HIT/weight stuff I can do, also started couch to 5 (again).

Hope everyone has a good week.

Phoenix - you sound like such a strong positive person, I hope you are ok today. I also live somewhere hilly and I loath running on the hills.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/08/2019 11:17

Mazig the best place for hiit type workouts at all levels is YouTube if you have a smart tv. So much variety, there's a lady called Emi Wong who does some brilliant beginners hiit, plus literally there's hundreds of others!

Phoenix we live in a very hilly area and trust me, they keep you fit! You sound positive and determined today- good for you!

W3 D1 down 8 lbs. Delighted!

FastAway · 19/08/2019 17:39

Well done everyone on losses this week! Had a difficult day yesterday, ate out at lunch and the only on plan was red pepper soup, and red peppers are the devils food. So had a small ciabatta and only ate half the bread, dinner was fine but then went out for a planned drink..... well this morning I felt awful!!! Just needed carbs so breakfast was a buttery bagel and lunch I had prawns with a small slice of sourdough. Dinner will be on plan but there is a rice pudding in the fridge which goes off today and I am going to eat it..... rest of the week is all planned so shouldn’t have any more blips.

2.5kg off in a week! Am thrilled.

FastAway · 19/08/2019 18:36

It does make me think what a change it’s been..... normally I would have gone out for lunch there and had a pizza, shared a bottle of wine with my friend, then come home had a roast dinner with loads of yorkies and potatoes, then probably a pudding, then gone out with friend and had a bottle at least of wine. And I wouldn’t have considered myself to have overeaten that day at all.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/08/2019 18:54

Closing the kitchen today on 1380 cals, 33g carbs, 12k steps (5km was a run). Not too bad a start to the week!

Cuppatea14 · 19/08/2019 20:52

Hi all, wonder if I can join in? Have been reading the thread in awe, everyone seems to be doing great. I’m giving F800 a go, I’m on day 1 of my 2-weeks on 800/day, managed to close the day at 833 which I’m happy enough with. Bit confused with some of the guidelines for the next two weeks, can I have a latte if I count in the calories, or are they just a no? And I had corn on the cob with dinner today, so delicious and sweet that I’m assuming it breaks some rule or other. Feel surprisingly fine today, presume it gets harder as the week goes on!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/08/2019 21:03

Cuppa welcome! Yes you can have latte/milk although it does use a fair bit of your calorie allowance (200ml semi is 100 cals), so that's maybe worth considering, plus some might consider a milky coffee as breaking your fast if you are doing time restricted eating (ie, not eating til lunch). I have soy milk now, it's slightly less cals but it's zero carbs so doesn't raise your blood sugar. Re:sweetcorn- it's pretty much one of the highest carb veg you can have, although it does have high fibre, so again, be mindful. I'm not sure what the official line is (because I detest sweetcorn so I've never looked into it!) but I'd probably avoid it in the first few weeks and go for leafy greens instead.

PhoenixMama · 19/08/2019 22:05

Well I'm over today - prob around 1200. But I did go for a run, on the hills. Not been a great day emotionally but about 10k steps & aside from being starving post run (still need to figure that equation out!) Could have been a lot worse though!

Maccalenny · 20/08/2019 07:20

Morning everyone...I’ve been absent from the thread for quite a few weeks but am hoping to return!

Phoenix, so sorry to hear about your breakup. A few years back I split up with my husband of 20 years....as horrible as it all was, it helped me that I was managing my weight well at that time. Even though everything else felt out of control and scary, it did give me some positive thoughts that I was able to maintain control of my eating. It’s brilliant that you are exercising too. Hang in there.

I’m a teacher so have been all out of routine for the last month. I’ve been camping for a week, then staying with family, then a few days in a hotel, and decorating half the house in between. All of this has meant that keeping on track has been challenging. For most of the time I’ve stuck to no sugar, low carb, no wheat, with only a few completely off-plan moments. But I’ve been nowhere near 800 and have noticed that snacking has been creeping in. There has been loads of pre-packaged food too, with not much fresh stuff. The good news.....my weight has been fairly stable throughout. So I seem to have found a way to maintain when not able to stay too strictly on plan.

I want to lose at least another stone, or one and a half would be amazing. I’m still not exercising and I do need to - some tone would be nice, and I’m at an age where loss of bone density and muscle mass start to be discussed! So I’m going to return to logging food accurately again, which I haven’t done for about 8 weeks. I will be aiming at 800-1000 cals daily, which should be enough for a gentle rate of weight loss.

It’s been great to read the thread and get up to date on how everyone is going. This thread has helped me so much since I started back in February and continues to inspire!

lasttimeround · 20/08/2019 07:28

So that's week 1 over. I'm down 3 lbs. Was down 4 yesterday but up for no discernible reason. Anyway.
I'm still not in the feeling more energetic zone. Probably need to move more.
Phoenix Flowers keep trucking on. Sounds like you are doing amazing.
Welcome mazig and cuppa maybe we can support/commiserate with each other over the initial adjustment period.
I need to stop watching the scale and trawling the FB group. Watched kettles and all that. Cheesed off at everyone who gets an enormous drop the first week. I never do. Although mine keeps going through weeks 3 and 4 so I know its swings and roundabouts but some days...
fastaway I find the adjustment in my mind about how much food I need one of the big bonuses of doing this. While I still slip back into bad eating habits they are generally much better than before

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/08/2019 07:39

Last I joined the Facebook group, although I swiftly left it because I found the sheer number of comments just overwhelming. If i do something 'wrong', I don't need 100 people berating me! Plus I found the admins didn't really understand the plan (although this may now have changed).
Macca hi, welcome back!

OP posts:
lasttimeround · 20/08/2019 08:39

Bear - I'm not sure about how close it is to the official book. I do something in between this and the mumsnet bootcamp anyway. It's also total time wasting obsessing in a way that's unhelpful for me.
Hi macca looks like we've failed similarly over the holidays. I've also more or less maintained. Back at it since last week, I'm in Scotland so our holidays are over now.

lasttimeround · 20/08/2019 13:24

I meant 'faired similarly' not ' failed'!! To my mind maintaining weight loss = v much success

PhoenixMama · 20/08/2019 13:52

Hi all, down a lb here so happy with that given gins, pizza & aperol spritzes!

No run today but I can feel my calves after the hill yesterday!

Nice to have you back @Maccalenny! Well done on maintaining!

Maccalenny · 20/08/2019 15:10

Bear, last and phoenix - thank you for the welcome back! It’s good to get back on the 800 wagon.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/08/2019 15:57

I didn't weigh in this morning, I'm trying to focus on the diet and not the numbers. I've been quite picky today though; a boiled egg here, slice of ham, grazing like a little goat 🐐. I don't think the calories or carbs are too bad but it's just the drip drip drip of food. Problem is, I'm bored. Ds has a friend over but they need almost constant supervision so I'm tied to the lounge/tv/kitchen. He's gone now so I've just given them the 10 minute warning- we are going out for a walk delivering some leaflets for my new cleaning business (whole other thread, very scary/exciting!)

Dinner tonight will be spicy chicken and salad, but I'm going to circuits first!

Someone asked upthread about sauerkraut and I must confess I recommended one that is actually pasteurised (so useless in terms of gut bacteria although still yummy!) which I didn't realise wasn't the right thing. So tomorrow I'm going to make some (it seems really easy, just cabbage and salt and time required!) and see how that ends up.

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 20/08/2019 16:18

I’ve been eating that sauerkraut too, didn’t realise it was pasteurised. Looking forward to hearing how the homemade version goes Bear.
Cleaning business sounds exciting!

Mazig · 20/08/2019 19:08

Hope everyone has had a good day.

I’ve been at work today. Travelling home now and I’m starving because I’ve only had a small lunch. This is my worst time for picking and then not stopping. Have fish and salad planned for dinner and will be strong and not eat until then. But it’s going to be tough.

I feel like I've become obsessed with macros. I’m worried about fat but finding it hard to eat enough protein without resorting to ham and chicken etc. Does anyone else feel like this?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/08/2019 20:54

Mazig in what way are you worried about macros? As in, not hitting the correct targets? My only advice is to try not to worry too much- focus on getting the carbs low, and don't actively avoid fat. You cannot eat too much fat on this diet, certainly not at first. If you focus on keeping carbs low (ie. below 50g as a general guide) and eat a varied diet, plus limit to 800 calories, the macros will naturally take care of themselves. One day you might find you've had loads of protein, another might be more fat, some days you might have more carbs than 50g (if you have lentils for example).

I generally struggle to get enough fat and eat too much protein (on days when my carbs are low). Chicken and ham are fine, but you could also have tuna mixed with olive oil, pepper and lemon juice, boiled eggs, smoked mackerel, houmous and cucumber sticks etc or peanut butter if you want something as a small meal/snack - these all have good amounts of fat as well as protein.
