Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

DH and I love poached eggs but had very iffy results doing it the cheffy way, we use an egg poaching pan (fits 4 eggs), completely fool proof. The whites do set firmer than cheffy way but if you don't mind that it makes it very easy.

Bluestitch · 09/01/2019 17:41

DP went to Aldi today and came home with an omelette maker for me. So excited, can't wait to try it out tomorrow! I've been good today, first day I've not wanted bread. Hoping that's a turning point, I'm desperate to see the 10s on the scales again.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/01/2019 17:57

Closing the kitchen on 1400 cals (making up for yesterday!), 54g carbs
and 13k Steps which includes a very slow 5km run.

Lots of small snacks today as I was trying to get my appetite back really, and it would have been so easy to turn to toast and crackers. Feeling much better now though, and the total cals and carbs is not too horrific.

Fasted 16 hours last night, 850 calories today, 16161 steps. Had most of my calories at around 16.30 and feel really full. I’m going to Wright weekly, so we shall see. I’m thinking far less about food. I know what I am going to have and at what time so there’s need to think about it in between. I am not sure I have ever felt that way before.

CarolDanvers · 09/01/2019 18:02

Weigh not Wright Confused

onanothertrain · 09/01/2019 18:15

Glad you're feeling better bear
700 calories today, might still have a babybel but will definitely be under 800.

TwoLads · 09/01/2019 18:15

Hi everyone. I've just started this. Was originally going to do the 800 calories two days a week but am going to see if I can do a little longer... Eating out and drinking booze are massive challenges for me! I usually do both a lot several times a week.

Anyway, weighed myself this morning - first time since Friday. I cut down on most stuff over the weekend and fasted Monday and Tuesday - was 15 pounds lighter this morning!!!! For context - I am about ten stone(!) overweight so have loads to lose.

Third day today and haven't eaten yet. Planning lots of salmon and an omelette with veggies for dinner.

MelanieCheeks · 09/01/2019 18:54

Made the Vietnamese pho from the book tonight-even fussy DH loved it ( I added udon noodles to his). And have just made some of the chilli sauce to use over the weekend. In Fact, I have a whole load of goodies to make at the weekend, including the seedy crackers.

Feeling positive :-)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/01/2019 19:27

Glad everyone's had a good day.

Welcome twolads, that's an amazing weightloss! You'll see some amazing results doing the fast days and eating the Med diet- please take some 'before' photos, you don't need to share them but I guarantee you'll want them for comparison in a few weeks/months time. Well done!

I'm looking forward to trying the new recipes, there's a coconut soup which sounds really good. Had anyone calorie counted any of the new recipes? The old book's calorie counts were a little hit and miss, so it's useful to use MFP or some other tracker to do an accurate count. Some were over, some under. We also have a recipe/menu thread so if anyone cooks anything amazing please post a link or the recipe on there!

Three pounds lighter than yesterday. How is this possible?! I only plan on weighing once a week but I'm away tomorrow and I caved early yesterday.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2019 08:08

Twolads well done, it's very motivating isn't it? The initial loss is mostly water, but it shows that your carbs are low enough for you to be becoming glycogen depleted. Keep it up!

OP posts:
TwoLads · 10/01/2019 08:15

Thanks! I'm drinking loads of water so will keep that up too

Oblomov19 · 10/01/2019 11:21

Doing ok here.

£26 to See MM? But it's for his new book about eating well from the outside in rather than strictly BSD, right?

Howhow, too was eating poached eggs at the same time as you and Danvers, but mine didn't look as good as yours. Mine was with bacon and grilled tomato.

Small, I think Bear is one of the biggest losers, but I lost just under 2 stone, 1 & 3/4 from 11 3/4 to 10.

Well done TwoLads.

Bear the new recipes you refer to- where are they please?
My mum rang to say they had a booklet in the Daily Mail (yeah yeah, I know!! Wink, but funnily enough they feature more MM and more BSD than any other paper!!)
But I doubt that was what you were referring to. Please link again because I've missed what you are all referring to.

howhowhow · 10/01/2019 11:41

How much did people
Lose in the second week? My loss has slowed right down (I'm weighing daily) although I did at least loose today unlike yesterday when I was a tiny bit up!!

howhowhow · 10/01/2019 11:53

I have 5 stone to loose. I'm on day 9 and have lost 7.5lbs. Does this sound about right? What do I need to do to encourage more off? I'm drinking, doing my 10,000 steps. I started at just under 16 stone (cannot believe I'm saying that) and I want to get to 11 stone.

This morning I had 100g of total 5% and 50g of blueberries. It was lush. The hunger is finally starting to subside. I struggled to finish my dinner last night (Thai green curry).

Gymntonic · 10/01/2019 13:01

oblomov MM books always seem to be serialised in the Mail, unfortunately. The new fast800 book, with some recipes, is being serialised online atm and I believe there was a supplement on Sunday. If that's what your mum has then the recipes will definitely be worth a look at.
Proper day 2 here - just had eggs on a slice of livlife low cal toast -spread with marmite and topped with grilled tomatoes. Thinking of doing a herbal / spicy teapigs order...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2019 13:49

Oblomov yes, gym is right, it's the new Fast800 book which has the new recipes. MM does seem to be friendly with the DM doesn't he? I'd recommend the book actually, it's got some new science in it, plus sometimes it helps to just rehear what we already know, doesn't it? It seems to be what we've been hoping for, and suggesting on here for ages I told you MM was lurking on this thread!, a maintenance plan basically, using med style eating and 800 cal fast days in combination.

I'll post a pic of the recipe for you oblomov.

bear I thought MM had been listening to us too when I read about his new plan Grin But I'm still going to buy the new book to find some inspiration.
small I lost almost 3 stones on BSD starting from 13s 4lbs but then I had an accident last year which massively impacted my mobility and I put on about 1.5 stones. I'm now slowly losing it again. fingers crossed
howhow your poached eggs look amazing! My DF was a massive fan of poached eggs and I've never eaten them since I was a child but your's are almost convincing me to try them again.

CarolDanvers · 10/01/2019 17:17

800 calories exactly today. Only 12697 steps though. Will try and increase tomorrow. Going to weigh on Monday morning, I've not got masses to lose though so will probably not be much. Hopefully a pound or two though...

Some great success stories on here Smile. I'm only four days in but already feel better in myself.

Gymntonic · 10/01/2019 19:41

Just noticed that MM is doing a live chat next week here

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2019 20:18

OP posts:
Gymntonic · 10/01/2019 20:39

I'll be working unfortunately so I need to think of all my questions upfront...
Not enough exercise today but under 900 calories so not too bad for me today

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2019 20:39

Stupid question, but how do the web chats actually work? Do you tune in to that thread or is it a separate thread? Never done one before!
