Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Also: closing the kitchen on 1007 cals, 66g carbs, (10g fibre). I've done 18k steps which includes a 5km run and an hour of circuits.,

I am going to have a bit of supper though, so another hundred or so calories to add in!

Hello,
Can I join you? Just finished day 3 on the diet, all good re food and hunger but have had the worst headache for 2 days solid. Hoping it will lift tomorrow. I read all 12 1/2 threads and I am so happy to finally be doing this!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2019 20:59

Just welcome! The headache sucks, it's the dreaded carb flu/detox unfortunately. Sometimes a bit of salt can help? Hope you feel better tomorrow.

Justanothergirl19 · 10/01/2019 21:03

Thank you, that's it, water and salt! To be honest, I have always a couple of days like this when I start a diet, perversely I like it because I can feel the changes in me already. You have all done do well! I am a very good starter but not a very good finisher if that makes sense so I am hoping that joining the group will make me feel a bit more accountable. As I say, I start all guns ablazing but after a few weeks I start to cave. Not this time I hope. X

Oblomov19 · 10/01/2019 21:40

Looking forward to the MM webchat.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 10/01/2019 21:58

bear I can't get either of the links to work but usually for webchats you post on the thread. You can either post in advance or when the guest is live. Usual rule is one question per post. MN or the guest pick which questions they want to answer.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 11/01/2019 06:57

I've just weighed myself and have lost 9lbs since NYD! I know that some of that is water weight and that the loss will slow down but I'm feeling positive.

I'm finding the diet ok. My difficult time is 5.30ish. I usually go straight from work to the gym and usually have a snack at that time to keep.my energy levels up. I'm struggling a bit with no snack but really dont want to cut my lunch down to allow calories for a snack. I might take a apple today to eat late afternoon. Not too many calories there.

I hope everyone else is finding this diet ok. I have borrowed the BSD recipe book from the library but haven't really tried many of the recipes yet. I've got a free day on Sunday though so maybe I'll experiment then.

MelanieCheeks · 11/01/2019 07:36

I bought the recipe book, rather than the "here's the science" one, because I always love trying new ideas. I have a menu plan for this week, which I'm tweaking as I go, I'll put the final version on the recipes thread when I'm done. I'm also recording my thoughts and feelings each day. Bit headachy here too, hadn't realised that was "carb flu"!

Having low-carbed before, I have loads of the food items already in my cupboard - linseeds, coconut oil, chia etc. I'll be shopping this weekend, and yoghurt is on my list, but I always end up puzzling which one to buy. Any favourites?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/01/2019 08:27

Melanie I always just buy the supermarkets own brand of full fat Greek yoghurt, although the die hard low carbers sweat by fage Total (but it's about 3x the price!). I do also buy the full fat normal natural yogurt sometimes, it's not as nice but it's a lot less calories.

Hi everyone,
Day 4 here - loss from the beginning is 5lb now which is great but I feel fairly rotten still. I have a set of fancy scales which tell you how much fat/water and muscle you have and apparently I have lost 3%water and a pound of muscle, nothing else. A little depressing if not unexpected!

TwoLads · 11/01/2019 10:35

Hi again. It's Friday and this evening and weekend are going to be a challenge! Dinner out with dp tonight - saving all my calories for it. Same with a friend's tomorrow. Im planning on doing 800 cals a day for two weeks but that's probably as long as I can manage. If that tbh!! Could I then switch to 800 cals 3/4 times a week with healthy low carb meals where possible the rest of the time? Just two days a week doesn't feel enough but seven is way too much,

Justanothergirl19 · 11/01/2019 10:41

In the book, MM says that you can do either the 8 weeks on 800 (or at least 2 weeks) or the traditional 5:2 or anything in between. I suspect the results will vary but so much is down to the individual, whether they are diabetic or not, how much weight they have to lose etc. If you don't have medical complications and you just want to lose weight, realistically you will even if you do a few days a week. Don't feel bad because you still need to live!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/01/2019 12:14

Twolads in my experience, and I've been doing this a while, I still lost weight doing various permutations of the BSD- I've done med style but 1200 calories, I've done free eating med style with occasional 800 calorie days etc and still lost weight. I've also abandoned calorie counting completely and managed to maintain for around 4 months. The key is the Mediterranean diet, not the calories, and I would really stress to anyone that rather than reintroduce the key 'banned' carbs, to increase their calories but stick within the med diet principles. So to answer your question, after your period of 800 calories every day, it's up to you how you do it, and it's probably worth testing out a few options. You could look at your week ahead and work out which days you will be able fast, and which days you will need more calories, or are likely to struggle to eat 800 (eg social event, or a day when you're planning to exercise). Some weeks you might do several fasts, some only 1.

When I did the original 8 weeks, I vaguely recall having occasional no-count days where I would eat as much as I wanted of BSD friendly stuff and re-feed myself! The type of food really is key.

Oxford street. Tortilla. Had a naked burrito. Chicken. No carbs. Was soooo tasty.

That looks lovely @Oblomov19. Good idea for next time I am on Oxford St.

Just under 800 calories today and 18,331 steps Shock which includes a 5 km run. I feel great actually and I have to say it's this thread that is inspiring me. Friday evening usually sees me slumped on the sofa but reading about @thenewaveragebear1983 going running all week really gave me a push to get out there tonight.

Justanothergirl19 · 11/01/2019 20:31

Good work!
Just had dinner - calorie count currently 679. The mind boggles as to what to do with the rest!
My headache has lifted and I feel bloody fantastic, if not a little hyper. Have you guys found this too? Even managed to do a 15 mins exercise routine and half an hour of yoga. I know this is the honeymoon phase but I really love it!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/01/2019 21:00

Hi all, good to hear you've been out for a run carol! And just, well done too. That lovely energy boost is one of the best things about this diet, it's like you turn into a fat burning machine!

Oblomov that looks delicious, what was in it?

I have massively hit a wall today, the week has caught up with me and I have eaten SOOOO much. No alcohol though (small mercies!) I've been so up and down this week so my first job for tomorrow is to plan my menu for the next few days and then actually stick to it!

Good luck for the weekend everyone

Thanks for the tips Bear!

I've been out to dinner and just counted the calories as best I could. Prawn skewer, veg skewer, halloumi (300 cals) and some Greek salad. That with a skinny latte earlier is bang on 800. I am however ruining it with some wine now but overall so much better than I would have eaten/drunk otherwise!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 11/01/2019 22:18

I've just got back from a friends where a group of us met for drinks and nibbles. I was surrounded by bowls of crisps and nuts plus wine but stuck to sparkling water. I think the boost of losing 9lbs in 10 days really helped me resist temptation.

irnbruforlife · 12/01/2019 08:32

I'm on day 6 and enjoying it. One thing I would say is that all the recipes I've cooked so far as so much simpler, easier and tastier than any of the recipes I ever cooked whilst I did sw a couple of years ago.

Bluestitch · 12/01/2019 10:25

I've discovered aubergine. Cut in half, little drizzle of olive oil and baked, I've been treating them like jacket potatoes with healthy toppings. I never knew they were so tasty! Trying to avoid the scales, really hoping to see the 10s as soon as possible. Still not drinking enough, I'm tempted to have some no added sugar squash, is that a definite no-no?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/01/2019 10:53

I drunk squash blue, not all the time but sometimes I want a real thirst quencher. These are also nice:

I have filtered water with fresh lime juice squeezed into it. It’s actually really refreshing. Less sharp then lemon, not as sweet as orange.

adamnfinecupofcoffee · 12/01/2019 11:18

13lbs off since Boxing Day.... had a few g&ts last night. So I've done the two weeks at 800 cals and think I'll stick to it for another couple of weeks for now.

Feeling surprisingly good! I like how I'm not so controlled by food and sugar any more

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/01/2019 11:35

It's incredibly liberating isn't it? Good work everyone!
