Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

I've ended up on 400 cals but that was dry toast, dry crackers and Heinz tomato soup. I think I'm over the worst of it now, but oh boy, that was a horrible day. Hopefully it's a 24 hour thing, and tomorrow I'll feel a bit less delicate.
Obviously very few steps today, 7k and no running!

Please can anyone tell me

Have you lost more than two stone following the BSD?

In what time frame?

Thanks

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/01/2019 21:38

Yes I have. I started at 13.3 originally and lost 21lb in the 8 weeks, then another 7. Then I put a few back on. January 2018 I started again at about 12.8 and I'm now 10.1 ish. I've pretty much maintained that now for 6 months although I would like to lose just a few lbs more (I'd like to be in the 9's!)

780 calories today and a fair bit of exercise but had to fight the urge to eat crap all day, I'm blaming it on time of the month

CarolDanvers · 08/01/2019 21:59

That’s very encouraging thenewaveragebear Smile

MelanieCheeks · 09/01/2019 07:23

I was at a party last night, and didnt think there would be much I could eat. But oh joy, someone had made mini fritattas!

Recipes from the book - I've tried the Japanese omelette which was a tasty variation of a standard.

In the Michael's Fishcakes recipe it says "1 egg" - is that raw?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/01/2019 07:28

I'm going to a party on Saturday and I know there will be a buffet. I was wondering if I should eat before I go and then not eat there. I can always put a small amount of food on my plate and then surreptitiously pass it to dh! I'm worried that with a buffet it's easy to over eat

CarolDanvers · 09/01/2019 07:47

Woken up NOT hungry, yay! So I am think a few extra calories yesterday has helped. Going to try and make it till about 11.00 and then have poached eggs, spinach and mushrooms. Not sure for the rest of the day but probably mackerel salad at some point.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/01/2019 08:22

Emma it really depends on the Calibre of buffet! If there's cold meat, salad, chicken legs, etc you'll be fine. If it's all sausage rolls and sandwiches you'll struggle.

I was 10.5 last weds and today I'm weighing in at 9.13.5. Although I'm not strictly accepting that after 'the virus' yesterday!!! I had a very up and down week, and quite frankly a terrible weekend so I'd imagine that once it settles I'll have lost a couple, but not 5.5lb! Oh well, I shall bask in the glory of being in single figures for this one day.....!

Ouch that's a bit pricey!

OohOohMrPeevly · 09/01/2019 09:27

I know - hence the request for a code if anyone has one. I'm hoping it will be worth it tho!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/01/2019 10:22

Not sure where you'd get a discount code from? Maybe if you do the online group BSD but I don't think anyone on here is doing it at the moment.

Bear congrats on hitting the 9's! Last day of school hols here for youngest, busy finishing off packing bags, ironing uniform etc.

I roadtested a couple of alcohol free drinks over weekend. Seedlip Herbal was very botanical/herby and odd but not in a bad way, felt like a grown up drink with tonic water and ice. Cedar's Classic is a decent alternative to a gin and tonic, intend to stick to this. Both are very low cal too.

howhowhow · 09/01/2019 11:58

I didn't lose any weight last night. First morning that I have weighed that I haven't lost a lb. trying to drink more. I think I'm constipated too. It's made me more determined to be super careful.

Thought you might like to see my brunch. Including the almond milk coffee 233 cals.

That was my exact brunch how. Very filling actually.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/01/2019 12:16

Looks lovely! I can't poach eggs, I never ever manage to get it right.

OP posts:
Smallhorse · 09/01/2019 13:20

Newbear that is really good.
Anyone else lost 2 or more stone ?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/01/2019 13:21

Congratulations bear

I suspect it will be a very posh buffet - friends of dh and their kitchen is bigger than our house!

howhowhow · 09/01/2019 13:22

CarolDanvers so funny we were probably eating the same thing at the same time!!

howhowhow · 09/01/2019 13:24

Bear have you tried a good splash of white vinegar? I have an induction hob. I literally boil the water, turn it down to 5 and crack them in 10 seconds apart. I don't even bother swirling the water.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/01/2019 13:48

I've tried every tip in the book, I just can't do them! They always just go to string. Apparently the hotel inspector (Alex polizzi) always asks for poached eggs to test the hotel breakfast because it's the sign of a proper chef to be able to do a proper poached egg

Emma sounds lovely, I have a great love of party food. Personally if it was me I'd eat the BSD stuff from the buffet and not eat before I go, but only because if I ate beforehand I would also eat the buffet.

small I lost approx 1 1/2 stone in the first 8 weeks and lost another few pounds afterwards. I don't know exact figures as I don't have scales at home. I suggest taking measurements though - all over I lost more than 20 inches in 8 weeks or so.

howhowhow · 09/01/2019 14:07

I expect it's your water. Mines hard and it's impossible to screw them up but I stayed somewhere with soft water once and they sort of expanded all over the pan.

Gymntonic · 09/01/2019 17:19

Lovely looking brunch there how. I'm always tempted by toast when I have a runny yolk so have to let mine set a bit at least. I noticed that the instructions in the recipe ( not that you really need a recipe but whatever) says to take the eggs off the boil and leave for five minutes. So no rolling boil. A bit like the Delia technique for soft boiled eggs. New one on me. I tried it out of curiosity and they did set and I lost less white to the water than I usually do iyswim. Might be worth a try bear?
First proper day for me as I've been at a conference since Monday and resorted to picking at the salad garnish and pulling the filling out of sandwiches.
On 600 atm - Pretty chicken coconut curry soup and an egg for lunch. Have just had 5% Greek yogurt with raspberries, flaxseed and pumpkin seeds. Need more water I think.
Off for a run then will need to decide between prawn stir-fry and vegan curry for dinner.
