Blood sugar diet thread 13

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/11/2018 18:21

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

@onanothertrain - my best days are the ones when I don't eat breakfast.

Alwayscheerful · 04/12/2018 07:13

I agree about no breakfast, i can just about make it until 12.00 noon I then have an early lunch of avocado and bacon. I think it's a combination of fasting between 6.30 pm and 12.00 the next day and not actually stimulating my taste buds!
I am aiming for 1000 calories and doing a combination of blood sugar and low carb, always under 50 a day but some days I manage under 25.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/12/2018 08:48

I agree about breakfast too, and I often do have it at weekends which I think is what kickstarts it all going off piste.

houseRefurb · 04/12/2018 21:14

Hope everyone is doing well.
1122 cals and 59g carbs
Hoping to get closer to 900 and under 50g carbs
Will weigh next week.

luckylips · 04/12/2018 22:37

Ended on 971 cals if you don't count the Baileys.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/12/2018 09:14

Ticking along, maintained at 10.3 this morning. I’m not running until this evening so it’s a good incentive to keep today very light, I get a stitch if I run after eating.

Dinner tonight will be pulled pork, provided I get all my jobs done quickly enough to get it in the oven early!

OP posts:
houseRefurb · 05/12/2018 16:15

Today has been one of those days when I am thinking that I am being very good with food choices (Protein shake, Soup, cottage cheese, avocado) ...
Only to realise that it all has added up to 1234 cals, 83g carbs!!

Makes me to wonder how many calories I have been eating all this while.. Little wonder the weight went back on

Will try to do better tomorrow!

Alwayscheerful · 05/12/2018 16:43

Yes I agree the carbs soon add up
Even if you think you haven't eaten any! Can we share some carb free food ideas?
Smoked salmon
Smoked mackerel ( trace)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/12/2018 21:54

House gosh yes, I could eat literally thousands of calories (even if it was all on plan) if I really went off piste.... I don’t know how I’m actually maintaining sometimes. Actually, I do, it’s running that’s doing it, but also running that makes me hungry too.

Good day today, busy morning doing the rest of my Xmas shopping, had leftover bolognese for lunch, and pulled pork and cheesy veg for dinner.

But then ate some chocolate. Oops. Bloody Christmas!

Anyway, food was likely good and low carb, and low calorie - felt hungry today, and have been very busy (20k steps, 8km run)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/12/2018 21:57

Oh and carb free- boiled eggs are a good one if you like to snack?

Also little crustless quiches with veg, salmon, broccoli cheese etc, or red pepper and goats cheese ones?

Joe wicks does some amazing little fish cakes made with prawns, salmon, coriander and spices, blend them up and then fry them in little ‘bites’, they are delicious!

OP posts:
luckylips · 05/12/2018 22:35

Ended on 891 cals.

Anyone else sick of spending all week losing a pound then gaining it back with an extra one at the weekend then continuing the cycle? Anyone know how to break it? I have 5 social events in the next 4 days! 3 of these are kid's parties. What's your strategy, eat before you go and say no to cake?

HalloumiGus · 05/12/2018 22:42

Slipping back in to say hello. I was here on the old threads and was doing great. But after lots of holidays I slipped back into old carb heavy habits and life has been kicking us about recently with family illness, work stress etc. I have been gobbling white bread and huge bags of crisps compulsively.

I need to get back on board as I have some worrying symptoms that are making me wonder if I have diabetes Sad Need to get to the GP but life is so busy and stressful I don't know when I will manage.

Alwayscheerful · 05/12/2018 23:19

The JW fish cakes sound fab.
Yes boiled eggs
Omelettes
Frittatas

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/12/2018 06:51

Lucky if you’re gaining 1lb weight overnight it’s most likely water retention. That cycle is horrible, it’s very demotivating. If i have social events I tend to say I won’t calorie count but I won’t go totally off the rails. Still stick to the principles, even if that does mean leaving food on your plate (chips) or saying no to dessert for example. It sounds silly, but change the day you weigh yourself too- if you weigh yourself on Monday morning you’ll undoubtedly weigh more than if you weigh on Wednesday after two good days on plan.

Halloumi Flowers I think a few of us have had a tough time this year struggling with illness, stress, etc. And tbh I think we need to accept that we're going to have these blips and even if it's weeks, months or years, there will be a time when we can go back to BSD and start to lose weight again.
I'm coming to the conclusion it has to be a lifestyle choice (not a diet) so when life goes completely off-plan, I either need to factor in a new way of eating that fits around the chaos or accept that my eating is going to go off-plan too for a while.
My eating has been quite unstructured this week and the scales have been fluctuating madly. I'm sure next week will give me a better idea of where I am.

fromnowhere · 06/12/2018 12:36

Hi all, checking back in as i also went a bit off piste last weekend Blush

Monday was a write-off as i gorged on white bread and mini-cheddars (i feel your pain HalloumiGus) but i started fresh again on tues and have managed to maintain the loss somehow.

Going to see family this weekend and my family are all total carb addicts, i will be confronted with a barrage of bread and chips. Going to an Italian on Saturday night for a christmas meal - wish me luck!

Also - wanted to add that i also find it easier to skip breakfast. I get hungry by 11ish but defo eat less on a day i eat breakfast. I work part time too and i find it much easier to stay on-plan at work than the rest of the week when i'm at home dealing with my delightful children Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/12/2018 20:42

Well it was all going rather swimmingly until I made mince pies with Ds, and sampled six one, and now I could quite happily land face first in the rest of the batch, (so have put them in the freezer for safekeeping)

Went to circuits, ran there and back too. 17k Steps. Lots of calories and carbs (although not too terrible as I’m planning a long run tomorrow).

I haven’t eaten too badly today, cheese and avocado for lunch and a pear, and not had dinner yet. If I hadn’t the bloody mince pies I’d have had a perfect day!!

Ouch bear that's super frustrating when one slip up 'ruins' a whole day. I just can't be around sweet treats or baking still and I've been on bsd 5 weeks now. I find it too hard to resist so I have to stay away!
I'm in training all day today so will have to resist the urge to snack to keep energy levels up!

HalloumiGus · 07/12/2018 18:50

Thanks Place - you're right about making it work around life chaos. I went to the GP today and they did blood tests for blood sugar, thyroid, vitamin B etc. Results back on Monday or Tuesday. I will kick myself if I have diabetes.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 08/12/2018 10:08

Halloumi I haven't figured out how to make it work when life is falling apart. I just recognise now that it's something I have to think about Grin I hope you get the blood results you want.
I've spent this week getting back to where I was before I went away last weekend. I've had lots of soup.
My house is full of chocolates, cake and sweets. Mainly gifts for other people but it's so hard to resist.

Westwing1 · 08/12/2018 10:09

Hi all, hope everyone is feeling well. All good here, maintaining but if I eat a carb I put on weight so I am still very much on as much fish and green veg as you can eat regime. My DH has just bought several pates, fancy cheese and dips which if I hit the wine I will find very hard to resist. He forgot crackers thank heavens. We had decorators in all week and house stinks of oil used on oak beams and despite lots of vacuuming we are covered in dust. So I will be steam mopping for a few hours. I look forward to catching up on the thread later.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/12/2018 16:40

Hi all, sorry to hear some of you are struggling. It’s so hard this time of year isn’t it? Food is everywhere! My tips are to plan your food and snacks really thoroughly, don’t get caught out. Factor in some luxury/Christmassy foods into meals rather than as extras (eg have some cheese and roasted figs for lunch, or smoked salmon, or nuts etc) rather than snaffled at the fridge door. For me, the ‘out of control’ feeling is much more to do with HOW I eat, not WHAT I eat. I find if I plan it, track it and weigh it, i don’t spiral out of control so fast. I have a bingey mentality, so I find doing this helps me keep on top of it.

How about setting some non food targets, such as drinking a pint of water before each meal, or always eating off a plate at the table, or waiting 20 minutes before having seconds or snacks. These mean you can ‘win’ the day even if your actual
Food is beyond your control. That gives you a feeling of success not failure and can curb you then going totally off piste?

There are some fab hypno recordings on Spotify, or the mindfulness app or headspace. I would bet my last rolo that of all the rules of the plan, the mindfulness one is the one we ignore the most- I definitely do! It can really help you to just grab that little bit of control to see you through a tricky social event.

Finally keeping up your healthy habits such as exercising or drinking water or whatever your thing is, even if your foods not been great, can really help. I will definitely be running through December. I’ve been doing an online advent calendar exercise thing each day and it really gets me ready to do a bit more, even though the actual activity is only a few minutes long.

I’m not even allowing myself to think Christmas until 21st Dec, although we do have a wedding next Saturday. I need to keep the mentality that it’s one meal out of 21 in a week and not use it as an excuse to just give up entirely. But also, one mince pie or cheese and biscuits is NOT going to ruin everything- but continuing for days because we’ve ‘failed’ will. It’s a big mentality shift, but if overall your food is good, then you can enjoy a little treat guilt free.

Hope everyone is ok, please use the thread to vent and get the support you need, we’re all in it together! Flowers

Thanks for the tips @thenewaveragebear1983. Another food filled day here yesterday as I had a family birthday then a Christmas get together in the evening.

Back to BSD principles today, although another party at 2pm today!

Westwing1 · 10/12/2018 10:41

Great tips Bear and you are right about the mindfulness aspect of the BSD, must confess to always ignoring that part. Christmas is one day not one month is a good mindset. Weighed and have gained 1 1/2 lbs over the weekend, lucky it's not more, roast potatoes, cheese and pate to blame. Strict couple of days for me, writing every morsel in food diary. Going out on Thursday night so that is my next mini goal, also must do some exercise.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/12/2018 20:08

Another day that started so well but has ended up over on calories and carbs! I just really need to read my own post below and follow my own advice!! I made a delicious chicken and leek pie (using little star shape, weighed out, bits of puff pastry thinking I would just have one on mine and keep the calorie count in check) and then the children whinged about it and I somehow ended up eating all their little stars of pastry too!! So about 500 calories Blush

So as a result I’m ending the day on 1500 cals, 90g carbs. 17k steps (went for a 5 km run). And promising to try harder tomorrow!
