Oblomov come on back in - we missed you and we've all battled with this so don't worry about gain etc.

I'm with you water - I am getting so bored of planning meals and reading labels and entering stuff on my app/food tracker. I've been trying new recipes here and there to mix stuff up, but that's just more work. Bleah.

Very lazy weekend, hideous boozing yesterday (whoopsie) but did make it to the gym today.

Tried to prep some mini-frittatas with roasted sweet potato, courgette, and red pepper in a muffin tin, but they stuck to the sides (despite lots of butter) and are, shall we say, not very instagrammable. Tasty though despite lack of structural integrity; ended up dumping them on top of some baby spinach and eating them with salsa. I've missed sweet potatoes so much, and this is a way to have a little without totally blowing my carbs and doing them in muffin tins makes portion control easier. Maybe I'll try again with some little paper muffin liners... In the meantime, about to finish the day - am at 627 cals and 36 gr carbs, but about to have some blueberries and greek yogurt for dessert as well.

Tentatively think I've lost another little bit this week, but will believe it if it sticks at Wednesday weigh in.

Onanothertrain there is no hard and fast rules really regarding maintenance. If you’re type 2 diabetic and want to stay of meds for example then you must continue to keep the carbs low but for non diabetics there isn’t really any guidance.
Your options are as you state- 5:2, or increase calories daily. You could allow a weekly ‘cheat’ meal as an alternative to 5:2. In my experience, allowing more carbs didn’t really work for me, I just gradually kept adding more and more and regained quite a lot and also found it very hard to get back into the plan. Also bear in mind that there is no ‘50g carbs limit’- it’s the type of carbs that you eat that really affect your weight. Whilst you could allow 50g carbs in the form of white bread or biscuits and still lose/maintain in the short term, it will make it increasingly difficult to sustain long term.

My strategy for maintenance (which I am struggling with at the moment) will likely be: more calories daily, which I need because of my running; continue to avoid the ‘big 5’ carbs (bread, pasta, rice, grains, sugar) plus continue to limit fruit/juices/fruit products etc; keep up the healthy habits including weighing my food, running, drinking water etc. I may add in a few fasting days a month too.

onanothertrain · 27/08/2018 19:38

Thanks bear. No idea where I got the 50g carbs thing from. I thought it was a BSD rule. Must have made it up.
Not diabetic, just chunky!
I'm not sure I can be trusted with bread, pasta etc again. Have to say i haven't missed it. Can't say the same about pizza though Sad
Think I'll try 800 calories 2 days a week and see what happens. Maybe a monthly pizza. Is there a carb number I should aim for? What's the thing I've seen mentioned before to work out the number of calories you need to stay under to maintain??

Excuse the mammoth post!

Today was ok but I’m knackered and just had a sandwich and three chocolates for my dinner. It’s strict club for me from tomorrow. I’m going to try and attempt 30 days alcohol free too as I feel so yuck from a summer of gluttony. I reckon my total gain since July will be about 5lbs! That’s awful considering I’ve had some good losses in that time too.

So: meals planned for the week.
Drink lots of water
Weigh and measure EVERY MORSEL before I eat it and add it to my tracker
Running in the mornings
No alcohol
Get more sleep
No snacking/grazing/mindless nibbling
Plus I’m going through the kitchen cupboards and chucking out all the crap because the kids are sugar free from 1st September too (they don’t know this yet!)

I am starting the week with a run at 6am, we’re going to see Dippy in Birmingham tomorrow so I’m taking a picnic of salad and ham, and then dinner will be a chicken breast and salad. I’ve not bought any of the usual nibbles I snack on (so no nuts, no Greek yoghurt, no cheese slices or chorizo slices etc) so while I will be hungry I will hopefully have at least a few good days to get back on track)

I’ve really got to do this properly as I feel so incredibly unhealthy, like a big overfed slug. I’m scared to weigh in, but I will do it and then move on.

On the 50g is like BSD legend and a lot of low carbers Do aim for it and use it as a limit very successfully. I think it’s just important to remember that the types of carbs matter too, and in some cases matter more. So you could exceed 50g by having lots of dairy, shellfish (weirdly high in carbs?) , cheese, veg , and be fine, but if you had 30g carbs in sugar, eventually it might catch up on you.

The calculator is a TDEE calculator.

Weighed in. I looked at the numbers. They were Blush! Hopefully most of that is water!!

Oblomov18 · 28/08/2018 12:59

Thanks Bear and Very for the welcome back.

I'm in Bear!! Smile
I've been good today, SO FAR!!

I weighed yesterday. it was as I had imagined. I have done what I promised myself I wouldn't do. Angry with myself. I've gone up into the next stone bracket.
11 stone 1 lb
I am very very small - only 5'2'' and I should be under 9 stone.

On this BSD diet, in January 2016, (yes, 2016 - 2.75 years ago) I started at 11 stone 7. I got down to 9 stone 12 at my lowest. Then went back up to mid 10's. on this thread, I kept trying to get out of the 10's into the 9's. Constantly !!! I promised myself that I would never let the scales go above the 10's, but would continue to try and get back into the 9's.

Now look at me!! Angry no wonder, (like Bear) I feel like a big fat slug!! (that image did make me laugh when I read your earlier post!!Smile)

So. Here we go again. Back to basics. I'll try and be good. I promise!!Wink

I'm due to go to Berlin in a week with my 2 best friends. Not sure how I'll do BSD then!! And Tenerife with the ds1's football mums beginning of October. ouch, but I wont worry about that now.

Westwing1 · 28/08/2018 14:13

Hi everyone, did ok on holiday, gained a couple of pounds, stuck to BSD in the main. Rolled into bank holiday and did not stick to BSD. Roast potatoes, bread and my nemesis crisps and wine got hold of me. Crisps in house for kids, I have resisted them successfully all summer until this weekend. Part of the problem is my kids don't really eat crisps so they just sit there. Feel absolutely terrible today, like bear says, an overfed slug, swollen, depressed, foul. Annoyed with myself. Too embarrassed to post weight gain, I was ounces away from my goal weight a few weeks ago so quite the set back. The silly thing is I actually prefer the food on BSD, genuinely prefer it. Okay, posting overall weight gain of 6 lbs.

Super strict week ahead for me. No alcohol is the number one priority. Going to try to shift this 6 lbs super fast.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/08/2018 16:32

Oblomov maybe not in time for Berlin, but definitely time before Tenerife to lose a few pounds! You know you can do it!

West I was the same. Really good on holiday, minimal gain. Ate crap at home like some sort of animal- gained 6lbs. I’d have preferred the nice holiday food than the rubbish stuff I’ve eaten this week! Oh well.

I genuinely prefer BSD food too. I don’t get that horrible full/stuffed feeling when I’m properly doing BSD. I have had a good day so far- weighed everything for my lunch and didn’t get tempted by treats or lattes (I have a bad habit of counting a full fat latte as ‘a coffee’ when it’s actually a pint of full fat milk!) and now preparing for fajitas for tonight’s tea. I’m making some mock wraps for mine which are basically very thin omelettes with almond flour in them so I will report back.

Thanks Bear, bouncing back from set backs is the name of the game. I will join you on 30 day no alcohol challenge, today being Day 1 for me. When kids back at school I am going to make myself a very simple exercise plan. Only had water so far today, dinner is 500 kc at most: 100 gr salmon fillet, 200 gr asparagus, 50 gr lentils, heap of steamed Swiss chard.

onanothertrain · 28/08/2018 19:06

822 calories and 48g carbs today. That included an orange ice lolly. Day 22 of 30DS. I was considering doing a 9th week of 800 cals which would take me up to my holiday but not sure I can face it, today has been a struggle. I was working from home and was so tempted by OHs crisps I've thrown them on top of the kitchen cupboard.

Oblomov18 · 28/08/2018 20:24

I unlike all of you don't love the BSD food. Well I do. But I still LOVE Majorly:

Wine
Gin and tonics
Crisps
Mashed potato
Sausages
Chocolate
Chocolate biscuits
Biscuits
Cakes

Nearly 3 years of BSD and my love of all these things has NOT gone away. And I have continued to eat them whilst on BSD. The only time I didn't was when I did the BSD for the first time, and I did do it quite properly, although not as religiously as some of you, and even then I'm sure I succumbed occasionally.

I fear I am un-convertible! Grin

onanothertrain · 28/08/2018 20:32

oblomov please don't say the crisp craving never goes away 😭

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/08/2018 20:39

I’m closing the kitchen on 1087 cals, 42g carbs. 17k steps including a 6km run. I’m pleased with that.

Wraps were really nice and could replace tortilla in recipes and also could be nice cold as a sandwich/bread replacement. I simply made a 1 egg omelette in a wide frying pan so it was very thin, and grated 15g Parmesan into it. The Parmesan sets very solidly I find, so it has a doughy sort of texture and held together even when wrapped around chicken and salad. Really tasty!

OP posts:
Oblomov18 · 28/08/2018 20:48

OnAnother. Fraid So! I did notice your previous post about being a fellow Crisp lover! Woman after my own heart, I thought at the time!

I adore them. Probably my food of choice. And no. My love of them hasn't gone away. In fact I think it's got worse!

I'm not helping, am I?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/08/2018 21:22

I am a bit like that with sugar even after 3 years. I’ve never stopped wanting it and I’ve never found things too sweet if i’ve eaten sugar. However, I have noticed my tastes have changed. I find chocolate very greasy and ‘cheap’ tasting (milk choc, I don’t like dark) so now if I do have a treat it will usually be something different like ice cream or cake.

I also find that when I’m on BSD properly, I get just those few seconds to weigh up the choice of whether I eat it when i start to crave it. This means I usually (sometimes) say no. I find even though I want it, I am able to resist it, when previously I would have just eaten it and then regretted it. So yes, while the cravings may never really go, I would say I am much more in control of them.

Seasidedreamer · 28/08/2018 22:44

Hi all - such a busy week and haven’t posted. An ok start to the weekend but not a great end. Wine got the better of me! 1lb on this week but hoping hormone related. Trying to be strict but hungry. I find proper meal planning is key so going to sort out the next few days. My TDEE is 1700 sedentary so wondering whether to up to 1100 cals a day for a while to give myself a bit of a break. Sorry to hear most others seem to cave at the weekend but good to hear that you’re determined to get back at it!

Westwing1 · 29/08/2018 11:56

Hi all, feeling less bloated today, another strict day for me. Eggs and veg on the menu. I will weigh tomorrow and hope to have lost.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/08/2018 12:10

West that’s good. I was already down 3lb after yesterday- that’s all water, obviously, but isn’t it amazing how much water retention we can carry??!

Seaside welcome back. Sometimes a calorie boost can have a positive effect on your weight loss. It isn’t sustainable to do 800 indefinitely so a planned and managed increase could be helpful.

OP posts:
Westwing1 · 29/08/2018 13:11

Blimey Bear how do you do that? I will be lucky to lose one pound. Maybe it's all the running and muscle burning fat faster. Dammit I'm going to have to start exercising.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/08/2018 13:29

I don’t know West, I’m like a camel. I do have a theory though- now I’m quite muscular I find I gain more after eating carbs and lose more quickly once I’m back on track. I think because the glycogen stores in your muscles are the first weight to go, and it’s the glycogen that holds the water (2 molecules water for each 1 of glycogen)- so cut the carbs, use the glycogen, shed the water. Do you drink a lot of water? I drink gallons, especially when I’m trying to be good, which seems to flush me out as well!

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/08/2018 13:31

Also, the fact I have more muscle mass means I store my glycogen there in the first place, hence my massive 7lb gains after eating a slice of cake.

(this is all my own rudimentary theory, don’t quote me on this!)

OP posts:
Westwing1 · 29/08/2018 14:36

I want muscles, esp arms, my arms have always been soft even when I was 7 1/2 stone. Water, you got me there, I am a medical miracle and pretty much don't drink it, 500 ml a week is completely normal. If I am really going for it I will drink 500 ml a day for a couple of days. Been like that all my life. DH drinks 3 litres a day. I can barely lift a litre bottle Grin.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/08/2018 14:56

Oh my, are you one of these weirdos people who doesn’t get Thirsty? I would love to not drink quite so much as I have a very sensitive bladder after having 3 babies! I am constantly needing a wee! What do you drink instead?
