Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

so jealous of those going away. haven't been on hol for years!! used to go many places.... have a toddler now and would love to take her away....when she gets a bit older. for now i just dream of being somewhere lovely and hot with gorgeous white sandy beaches!

last night after a loooong day i ate 3 wraps. yes 3 massive wraps with cheese, and this after some supper... i think if there had of been more i might have just ate them. i didn't have the motivation to stop until the packet was finished - i only got the pack on sunday, which means ive had 8 wraps in 2 days! not good. every time i get wraps i eat them like this, and they werent even the healthy ones. sigh. i keep telling myself my body needs the extra food but i know it doesn't (not anymore lol) so i really need to kick this habit of just mindless eating. i know what i should have done last night, got up and went upstairs to bed...but i didn't. good luck everyone today on your fasts.

Eatriskier · 04/03/2014 06:42

So having decided that my tdee is probably higher than the figures coming out of calculators and my fitbit, I've decided to try for a calorie overage. Between Friday and this am I've gained 4lb. on 500 calories over. How you may ask after I keep losing like a maniac? Bloody aunt flo, that's why. And yes, I wasn't complaining about her visiting too long ago. She loves me. I hate her. She keeps insisting on showing up. Wah wah wah...
I just want to know how much I can eat.
Oh well, will see where I am on Friday. I'm still having my pancakes today.

bigchoc some of this might please you, it's at least a step in the right direction info-wise. I will NEVER get back on that 1200 treadmill. Ever.

Off out in a minute to do pre-school run and mad dash for bus into town to keep my appointment with The scales of Doom!

Back later with numbers.

Gulp.

zedzedzed · 04/03/2014 08:23

Look away FD peeps...here're some Shrove's of Yester-year Favourites for your pancakes:

Clotted cream, golden syrup and toasted pecans

Homemade lemon curd, vanilla ice cream, flaked almonds

Brown sugar bananas, toasted hazelnuts and nutella

Dulce de leche caramel sauce and crunchy peanut butter

My simple favourite (which I'm making tonight for everyone): maple syrup and fresh lemon.

Yum!

today i start to be good again - only for 5:2ing :) nothing else!!
I've made myself a food diary on the computer like Betsy suggested and i've decided to view my fasting journey as a new start - to overdo the metaphor, I had taken a wrong turn and ended up lost in a cup de sac and now I've found the right road I'm starting on the main road of my journey again!!

What do you do when you're not particularly hungry right now but know you will be later with no opportunity to eat/not eat crap?

zedzedzed · 04/03/2014 10:04

Drum roll....The Scales of Doom say...after 8wks of 5:2 I have lost...23lbs!

Wow.

23lbs

I have gone from 17st10 to 16st1 since Jan 6th.

TWENTY-THREE EFFIN POUNDS PEOPLE!!

And it was EASY!

I know it will slow, I know I will plateau, but I am a quarter of the way to goal while eating more and better than on any 'diet' ever.

GRINNING FROM EAR TO EAR!

Thanks to all for your tremendous support!

Ain't no stopping me now!

So many exclamations in this post.

!!!

almostthereagain · 04/03/2014 10:11

Zed AMAZING!! Just wow! Well done you, so pleased for youThanks

FridayJones · 04/03/2014 10:12

That is fan-freaking-tastic zed!!!

FabBakerGirl · 04/03/2014 10:13

WELL DONE zedzedzed!!!!!!!!!!! Brilliant news. And I'm not even jealous Grin, just so happy for you. Brilliant!

I am proud of myself that I came in about 480 calories yesterday so FD achieved. No weight loss for ages but no gain for 4 weeks either.

No idea what to eat today. Having chicken Kiev, mash and veg for dinner but so far had no food. Saw chocolate and just thought I don't really want it so I am not having it but while I feel I can wait until lunch I am also thinking I am not losing because I am not eating enough on NFD.

BetsyBell · 04/03/2014 10:14

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!! Zed Brilliant Flowers Easy isn't it!

Yay nellymay - the start of a fab new journey :)

Eatriskier · 04/03/2014 10:20

Great going zed

Not only is af giving me a massive scale hike, but I'm also hormonal rage woman. Doesn't help that Dd is well enough to act up but still to poorly to go to activities like swimming and ds is now also poorly. I feel trapped and like I'm going to blow up hulk style. About to give the kids a snack then put them down for a nap so I can have a break and March around my living room calm myself down.

almostthereagain · 04/03/2014 10:21

Fab Well done to your ddSmile hope she's being nicer today! I have been struggling with sleep, all the tried & tested do work, walks to clear your mind & exercise, no caffeine later in the day, no electronics, bath, milky or herbal drink, read in a de cluttered bedroom. Hth.
Bigchoc just Thanks thanks so much, you're soo good at responding to everyone. My head was all over the place yesterday but I'm feeling more energetic & focused today, if a littleAngry, which brings me on to mazzle sympathies, also having useless dh issuesHmm feeling quite ranty as ds was a bugger last night too, feel like I've got 2 giant toddlers! Hope you've made upSmile
Eat I'm sure adjusting your cals /TDEE will be easier next week & you'll have a much clearer view. So frustrating I know myself a tiny increase seems to mean overnight poundage. Tis the curse of a low TDEE for me I thinkSad
hopeful more tales of Aus, I spent 2 happy trips backpacking there in my yoofGrin We almost went to fiji or French Pol. for our HM but I couldn't face the slog there having just come back from Aus. Would second Mrs F suggestion as a good alternative to Maldives.
After last nights FD retrack, fasting today & ITS PANCAKE DAY! Everything is going wrong....

DottiestDoris · 04/03/2014 10:37

Hurray! Well done Zed, that's such a fantastic payback for all your hard work. Bloody brilliant. Thanks

Nellymay · 04/03/2014 10:48

thats brilliant, Zed well done

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2014 11:01

Whoop whoop zed! Grin

And thanks for that huffpost link - a lot of good stuff there re the exercise I think, plus the bloody '1200 cals' .... which really sucks if you're my height and age - my TDEE if I get to 8.5 st (which is midrange healthy BMI, not low) is for sedentary 1299 Hmm

That's why I'm gradually trying to build muscle/lose fat rather than worrying too much about weight.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2014 11:01

Well done, Zed, that's a wonderful SV
Flowers
Great discipline, establishing healthy habits - so important for a WOL
Extra Flowers for healthy habits !

Keep going like this and you'll reach a healthy BMI in the next few months.

Wow!! Congrats zed that's fantastic reward for all your hard work Smile so pleased for you!

Mrs F I'm going to throw in a wildcard here and mention Borneo... It's kind on on your way from Oz and Sabah has jungles with wildlife and plenty of chances for DCs to run about, get muddy and play in waterfalls and white sand beaches too - not to mention some of the best diving in the world... It's sort of on your way to the UK too. Ooh, or Indonesia, I loved Gilli Trawagan but it's a bit if a faff to get to, I've heard good things about Bali (although the airport is a dive!) - both have great diving / snorkelling.

I hope everyone enjoys their pancakes! I had totally forgotten it was today until I came in here - don't really have enough calories today so will have to defer them until tomorrow.

MrsFlorrick · 04/03/2014 11:17

Zed. GrinGrinGrin
There are not enough smileys for this!!! GrinGrinGrin

Well done Zed. Well on your way.

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 04/03/2014 11:25

CONGRATULATIONS Zedzedzed really pleased for you!

Yey Grin pancake day, only realised last night. Although my Chinese DP is so not bothered, so I think I'll make B&W's recipe just for myself (I'm vegan too!)

Happy pancakes all, have fun and eat mindfully Wink

Oxtailchambermaid · 04/03/2014 11:27

Zed that's amazing - well done! You're nearly 15 - something, what an achievement! Smile

Megrim · 04/03/2014 11:28

Well done zed that's brilliant!

Hmmm...that makes DelGirl the winner of the "guess the jaw-dropping amount of lardage loss" competition.

BTW, when you get to 28 lbs this will show you how much weight you've lost in terms of blocks of butter Grin
