Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

However (thankfully) I have read that it is possible to reset the Set Point to a lower point. This can be done if you maintain a lower weight for a prolonged period (I'm talking about a year), then your body adjusts its expectations.

I hope so. My metabolism is fecked though - I am on a high dose of thyroxine.

Megrim · 15/03/2014 18:07

Growing up, we never ate out and fish n chips on holiday was a big treat. I went to Uni in Birmingham, so was quickly inducted into the student curry lifestyle.

Talking of which, off out for a curry tonight - we have a "healthy" curry house that uses less oil, and the food is fab.

Been a strange day, NFD though not felt very hungry, but full of energy so have dragged DH out for a 5 mile walk this morning and a 20 mile bike ride this afternoon (he was seriously flagging by the time we reached the pub so we had to stop for a restorative tonic drink. With nuts).

Helliecopter · 15/03/2014 18:37

Hello. My name is Hellie and I am a pizza slut.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 19:02

I'm thinking of nc'ing to pizza slut.

Nice to meet a fellow slut. Wink

Biking 20 miles and walking 5??? Is that normal for you??? I've walked around Tesco and to and from the car park of Pizza Hut Shock

Octopus37 · 15/03/2014 19:29

Haven't been very good today, chocolate shortbread, biscuits, loads of Pringle, 2 thirds of a Pizza - on top of breakfast and lunch. TBH emotional eating but tomorrow is a new day. Got to go to Boots anyway tomorrow morning, so going to make tomorrow my weigh in day as know I wont have time on Monday. If I stay the same I'll be pleased, really hoping I haven't gained.

womblesofwestminster · 15/03/2014 19:36

Octopus37 emotional in what way? Boredom?

Eatriskier · 15/03/2014 19:38

All this dirty talk... We're awaiting our dirty dominos.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 19:42

Did you use the offer buy one and second for a pound???

womblesofwestminster · 15/03/2014 20:32

Enough with all the pizza talk! It's a fast day here.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 20:33

Wombles, DP is trumping like a trooper. Just think of that and you'll be glad you're fasting Grin

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 20:34

Dog is also trumping the kit Kats out. He then looks at his bum, shocked ! Hmm

TalkinPeace · 15/03/2014 22:36

Aha,
I've just discovered a BRILLIANT way to control calories at the weekend.
Its called having a daughter needing picking up from parties late, two evenings running.
Am sitting here with a mug of tea, waiting till I can go out and get her!

Dumpyandabdabs · 16/03/2014 00:19

Not usually one for delurking but have been doing 5:2 for about 4 weeks now so decided to dip my toe into the thread as you lot seem like a lovely bunch. I decided to give this WOE a go mainly for the healthy benefits but also to see if I could alter the shape of my body a little. I don't have a lot of weight to lose and had a bmi of 22 but the fat that I do carry is mostly in the waist area which I know is the worst place for it, I'm an apple, a small apple but an apple never the less. I've really enjoyed it so far (well most of the time anyway) and have lost around 3.5lb since I started. Have upped my exercise and have been trying my hand at some hiit sessions. Some really good advice and support on this thread, will endeavour to continue and hopefully unearth my abs underneath that darn belly flab!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 16/03/2014 07:47

Hello dumpy!!! Glad you've de-lurked. Congratulations on weightloss.

I spoke to DH last night and I'M JOINING THE GYM!!!!! How exciting. They have a pool so I think swimming one night and weights/jogging 2 nights a week. GrinGrinGrin

TwittyMcTwitterson · 16/03/2014 07:48

Jesus, I've done it again. DP. I spoke to DP.

Eatriskier · 16/03/2014 08:07

evee I used to call DH hubby in real life before we were married because it was easier. Got married last August. For some reason now I can't stop calling him partner. I have no clue why

Megrim · 16/03/2014 08:12

Beautiful morning here, spring has definitely arrived.

eveesmummy I usually try and do something very day, especially as I'm not currently working, and I find that diet combined with plenty of exercise works best for me. We have a disused railway line close by that goes for miles, it's fine for walking and cycling along (although DH drags me off into the hills on the bike, and then gets cheesed off because I overtake him on the climbs).

Also, is your dog a chocolate lab by any chance? Smile

Scales were up a little bit this morning, but I've lost a whole inch off my hips this week??? I know I had lots of salt the last couple of days so I'm hoping it's mostly water weight.

Helliecopter · 16/03/2014 08:32

Morning!

What a way to start the day...baking a chocolate cake for my grandad's birthday; cake in the oven by 7:45am without licking the bowl or spatula. NSV! The house smells amazing though and I'm trying to skip breakfast and save a few cals as we're off to my family for Sunday lunch and my dad's lasagne is legendary. More peppermint tea...more peppermint tea....

welcome Dumpy!

I just actually LOL'd at dog trumping kitkats.

megrim an inch off your hips?! Wow!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 16/03/2014 08:35

Still that's a lot of exercise!!! Well done you! Ha, no he's a dirty stinking rottweiler but his feet, nose and bum are chocolate coloured. I just are the last three slices of pizza and he was there, slobbering like a scavenging beast. He's currently being mauled by DD. They have a very special relationship Grin

He doesn't want to get married Confused so I have no chance of making that mistake.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 16/03/2014 08:35

Ps DD woke up at half 6 and it was so bright and sunny that I've been super excited ever since.

CiderwithBuda · 16/03/2014 10:35

Morning all. Gorgeous sunny day today. A gardening day apparently according to DH. Again. Off to buy some plants shortly for our pots n the patio. Then helping DH shift all the furniture out and sweep down the patio. It's huge so that should count as exercise.

Welcome Dumpy. They are a nice bunch on here.

I've just had toast. Hangover curing peanut butter on toast.

Went shopping yesterday as wanted a black top to wear with the trousers I was planning on wearing last night. Got a nice one in Debenhams. Size 20. Then went to M&S and tried on a couple of things in size 20. Far too small. So much for their vanity sizing! Or Debenhams is worse! Am so desperate to be a couple of sizes smaller.

New Pinterest board for your motivational pleasure: Fasting!

BigChocFrenzy · 16/03/2014 13:01

People have lost loads on 5:2, just be patient and you will too.
Check out the inspirations thread.

I found meno suddenly added on several pounds around the middle and my body just didn't behave the same. Also, low carb didn't work any more.
5:2 was a reset switch for me.
From anecdotal evidence and lifting sites, IF is particularly suited to us !

Megrim Losing an inch means you've lost fat. That's always a great NSV.
Don't worry about the weight, probably extra muscle and / or water.
