Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Only just logged on after my earlier query. Thank you so much bigchoc for giving me such detailed advice. I really appreciate it and will definitely try it. You are a real inspiration! Flowers

zedzedzed · 03/03/2014 20:33

Poor B&W seems awfully harsh considering it might just be useful for lots of previously-left-out-of-shrove-vegans...and aren't these going to be served warm with some sort of sweet something on top anyway?

I'm a total omnivore so have no motive to try these instead of the milky-eggy type, (only on Tuesday and Christmas morning though as I like mine with maple syrup and/or ice cream!) but we all have a motive to be polite and a responsibility to be well-mannered so there's no excuse really.

Prrrrrthrrrrp

ErrolTheDragon · 03/03/2014 20:34

Though I did laugh at the suggestion that flour and water isn't nutritious

yeah, given that bread is a staple for many people

zedzedzed · 03/03/2014 20:41

PS dotti yes, I've checked the bus timetables and Houston, we are go, go, go for operation Tuesday Weigh....having read up thread I'm giving myself every opportunity for good news: post FD, post totm and post poo. Yes, this is tmi, but you have to take the good with the shite. Grin

Will let you know when I'm home, bets have been laid at between 8lb (me being cagey) and 23lb loss!

Eatriskier · 03/03/2014 20:47

errol hahaha I missed that too

(({Breadandwine})) Poor you, merely posting a nice cheap vegan recipe.
Sometimes MN can be very spiteful.
Thank goodness we are all friendly on these 5:2 threads, where some folk are quite vulnerable.

Thanks for your thoughts BigChic. I think you might be right about the numerous diets I have been on upsetting my dieting equilibrium. I am pretty certain about the 1200 per day average. I think this week I'll aim to eat a bit more on non fast day and eat my exercise calories, and see what happens.

I'm not unhappy with the diet as such- it's always massively hard for me to shift any weight, and so losing a stone is a big deal BUT lots of other people seem to lose more and faster...

(Also- have just read the pancake thread Breadandwine. There are some very peculiar people out there...!)

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2014 21:49

Mazzle It would have been healthier to crown your FH drama queen by smacking those Rice Crispie bars on his silly head.
Smile
You would have:

  • avoided eating those junk calories
  • expended some DH-smacking exercise calories
  • lowered your blood pressure with the release of stress
OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2014 21:54

Stoops Don't eat any more than 500 on FDs. Just on NFDs, eat up to at least your sedentary TDEE, which I expect is higher than 1200.

OP posts:
MazzleDazzle · 03/03/2014 22:01

Or rammed each in one of his orifices. Hmmm now which would I choose first?

He's on his way home now. Oh joy. Never mind, it's nearly bed time! Unfortunately I also succumbed to a tiny square of Green & Blacks. Not the end of the world though. I quickly threw all the carbs in the bread bin, downed a water and ran from the kitchen.

By the way B&W I used your recipe (just flour and water!) to make your 5 min bread in a pan. I kneeded some dried herbs into the dough for extra flavour, then topped the flatbreads with tomato sauce, veggies, tuna & cheese and chucked it in the oven as a quick and easy pizza. How rude of the people on the other thread! Unfortunately there are far too many bullies on here!

MrsF I dare you to start a thread re. your bikini for the private island dilemma! In AIBU!

EagleRay · 03/03/2014 22:41

Batfuttocks we are exactly the same weight! (well, was 0.1kg less than you at the weekend when I last weight). Although I suspect you are significantly taller and slimmer than me... You inspired me to get the tape measure out and finally do my measurements - was Shock when I saw them, but I guess they can only get smaller now. I'm mortified that I thought my waist was quite small - 34 bloody inches!!

FD tomorrow and food all prepared. Does it matter that this will be my 5th FD and I've eaten exactly the same thing each time? Just don't seem to have the time to vary things, but am quite happy with what I'm eating.

MrsFlorrick · 03/03/2014 23:00

Mazzle. GrinGrin

I'm a chicken. Buuuut after Wine on Friday night, I'm very suggestible and can be persuaded to do all sorts. Wink

I would have to made the Op really goady with the terrible first world problems I suffer daily Wink
That should get the bullies out no problem.

Breadandwines treatment sadly isn't a one off. I've recently seen some terrible stuff in relation to parenting and SN. Made me really angry actually.

batfuttocks · 03/03/2014 23:02

I can't work out the take home message! My waist is bigger than the 80 cm cut off as set by the who for health, but my waist to height ratio is .46 which is ok. I think I am an apple shape, although it could just be my tummy is bigger than usual after a baby.

I am tall though - 6ft. I am losing to get lean and also through health issues with hyoermobility, I want I be lighter to help with joint pain and stronger to protect against more injuries. Usually I stay slim with running but that's out of the question right now, and I have old issues with bingeing which dieting sometimes triggers. (Hence why I usually exercise to lose weight, not calorie restrict). I find this woe "safe" for me, I think because nothing is "banned" and the two fast days are just a simple rule to follow.

hopefulgum · 03/03/2014 23:06

I have never understood why some MNs feel the need to be mean.Maybe they think it is cool ?

B&W, I appreciate cheap recipes as I have a hungry hoard of kids, and I can't seem to feed them for less than $400 (Australian) a week. Even with DH and I fasting twice a week, it hasn't made a big difference to our food bills as it has for some. I guess it is partly because my two oldest boys have come back home to live (God knows I love 'em, but I'd like them to live somewhere else and stop eating so much!). I think it is also because we eat very well, I don't skimp on beautiful vege and we are omnivores and love good cuts of meat.

My fast day yesterday didn't happen after all as I was home all day (public holiday) and we had unexpected visitors. I also needed to cook the pork belly I had in the fridge. OMG! So delicious. I made a Jamie Oliver recipe and it was beautiful.

So I am fasting today. So far,so good. I woke in the night very thirsty and hungry last night, but just drank a big glass of water and was fine.

I am strapped for time so haven't read all 7 pages. Read a little bit. Zed, I can't wait to see how much you've lost. I think it will be a reasonable amount, but can't make much of a guess.

Some of the losses on this thread are amazing. Mine has been miniscule in comparison. I think it is because I am not counting every NFD. I'll try this week.

MrsF, thanks for your replies to my questions. I am in Australia and it is soooo far from Europe. A 10 hour flight would be easy, as it is usually 24 hours. And stopping in the Maldives would be wonderful. My Dh thinks I am dreaming, but I like to dream big and make it happen. We will have our 25th anniversary December 2015, so I'd like to do something special. I have been looking at resorts on the Maldives and some are stunning. How do you choose? So many lovely ones. Do you take your children?

If you're fasting today, I hope it goes well, and remember , "I can eat it tomorrow", drinks loads and think of the bikini...much better than poo crumbs, ewww!

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2014 23:40

bat Don't worry, your waist is healthy for a 6' woman. The absolute waist limits doesn't work for very tall or very short folk.
The health orgs should stick to the 0.5 waist:height ratio

For a more detailed assessment of your body, obtain your body fat% via the calculator at the bottom of the 5:2 exercise thread OP.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2014 23:42

bat If you have knee probs, try outdoor cycling or spin classes to burn fat.
Also, do press-ups, situps, plank etc for strength.

Thanks big choc: body fat 26%; I know its ok but am looking for optimum iykwim

Am usually fit and used to shred and do Jm burn fat boost metabolism, tae bo advanced etc as well as run. All my joints ache and are clunking in and out with movement, so focusing on Pilates with some cardio ( tae bo as high intensity but low impact adaptations) as I miss the endorphin hit from prolonged cardio. I think I am aiming at bmi 20 and a body fat around 20-22% , and a few cm off those measurements. Mainly I want to feel strong and fit again ;-)

batfuttocks · 03/03/2014 23:53

Am looking into a new bike and turbo trainer as having a wee baby limits the options for exercising outside the home !

MrsFlorrick · 03/03/2014 23:59

Hopeful. You're in oz. lovely place. And you can get to the Great Barrier Reef. Very different to Maldives but a wonder all the same. I can't wait until DC are older and we can all go.

DC are 4.6 and 2.6 so yes they go with. We took DD to the Maldives when she was 14 months old. And June last year we took both of them
To the Ref Sea.

I took DD out snorkelling several
Times. She wasn't even 4 but she had a mask, fins and snorkel and she got the whole thing and loved it.

I will be taking her out again this time. Obv just shore snorkelling and the drop offs near shore. Nothing too taxing or wild.

I may see if DS fancies it but he has this thing about seaweed and thinks its yukky.

How you choose a hotel. Well always tricky. There are so many great ones. And all so different.

Decide on your budget and shop for deals. You would be amazed at what you can get with a haggle from a travel agent.

Obv check out potential choices on trip advisor. You can easily spot a bad one. Also do see through some people's complaints. Some people actually complaint about the weather and mozzies. Erm yes it's warm and you're in the tropics so the odd mozzie is part of the deal.

Some places are very barefoot luxury. Others are vamped up high octane bling. Pends what you fancy. Or you could do a week each in two different places.

There are budget options. The hardcore divers use them. Basic hotel basic food amazing diving.

DH and I went here 9 months before DD was born Wink sadly they don't accept DC under 12. Sigh.
m.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/property/overview/index.html?language=en_US&propertyID=1585

Stayed at this one on two different trip. Barefoot luxury. Spa is out of this world.
www.banyantree.com/en/maldives_vabbinfaru/

This is the one we took DD to. Service was amazing. Bling. And DS was born 9 months after this trip.
reethirah.ooresorts.com/

This one is our budget island. It's fab and its reef is the best in the Maldives. Cannot be beaten. I've been here 3 times. Spa is great and food is great. Sadly not DC friendly as there is nothing for very young DC to do.
www.angsana.com/en/maldives_ihuru/

And this one is amazing. Very barefoot but so luxurious. Get yourself a 2nd mortgage though. It's the priciest of them all.
www.soneva.com/soneva-fushi-maldives/home

If you're in Oz and want some reef action how about Fiji? I've been and the reefs are amazing. Bit of an odd country. 3 military coup the two weeks we stayed.

Or French Polynesia?? I've always wanted to go but its too far from UK. It would take 36hts to get there. Not bad from Australia though.

MrsFlorrick · 04/03/2014 00:07

Oh and Hopeful. Just beware that many of the barefoot luxury places in Maldives don't have TVs in the rooms.

That didn't bother me pre DC but we do need something now just in case or to tempt the DC out of midday sun etc.

I have to say if I was you I'd look into French Polynesia. You can actually get there. I've got no chance. That said I made it to Fiji which is a pretty long trek from UK. Wouldn't do it again though. It was too far even for me.

Can I ask what part of oz you're in Hopeful?? I love Oz. DH used to work for an Aussie international company and we almost emigrated 7 years ago. I'd still do it if we got the chance. DH won't. He's an only child with octogenarian parents. Sad
