Ok, I know we technically haven't finished 2022 yet as there is still the Christmas Concert for some (my ds is not taking part due to his conservatoire concert) but NYMT have released details of their 2023 season & auditions here

mailchi.mp/nymt/nymt-2022-season-announcement-5919443?fbclid=IwAR2nM_B-gUzYyvEzUTMDFUt2c4RiuW5ElKjmdxG6qJIgIPS2W6owl8GY7NY

Good luck everyone whose dc are applying this year

@NotEvenSlightlyReasonable Can I ask whether you are thinking that your DD's 1st choice plus BYMT would be financially impossible, or whether it's more that you are worried about a date clash. You won't hear about BYMT until March at the earliest. So if you are worried your DD's first choice will run out spaces, I'd honestly go ahead and book it. If there's no financial reason why she couldn't do both, eg if first choice is local and inexpensive, you could just put a note on her BYMT audition form saying that she's unavailable on those dates. BYMT have loads of shows and if they really wanted her there's a chance they could work things out so that the dates work. Of course, they might ignore that and offer her a show she can't do, which would be disappointing, but sometimes they are willing to move people to other shows, from what I've heard, and even if it didn't work out, if she got in once it would be a good indication that she'd be well placed to try again next year.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 08/01/2023 14:27

Yes, BYMT definitely more flexible in dates and moving people around than NYMT who cast into specific roles from the outset...

BYMT seem to have weird ways of letting people know. Sometimes people get a show specific offer really quickly, other times it's a holding offer to say they want you but then you wait to find out which show, other times the dreaded reserve place which is the worst of all imo as you could put your life on hold for nothing at all!

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 08/01/2023 14:39

It's an either/or for financial reasons. Left to myself I'd give fate a nudge by booking the first choice and being willing to lose the deposit but DH is more sensible and says no. We're keeping an eye on availability online and might need to change the plan down the line. Either that or BYMT will fall around laughing and say no need to wait to hear back.

It's hard because as someone with no background in this I have no way of judging whether she's any good. I think she is, but I might be biased 🤣 I'm told she is, but can't tell whether people are just being kind/blowing smoke.

Thank you for the info on how it all works. It's a learning curve.

No tag because they're sending my phone hysterical and turning the whole post into a tag.

Biscuitsneeded · 08/01/2023 14:51

If people are telling you your daughter is good, she is. She probably stands a solid chance. It probably comes down to your daughter. If she is clear in her mind that the first choice is her preference no matter what, then could you book it and take the view that the BYMT audition is just for fun and to keep the friend company, and as a family you are all clear that if she does get a BYMT offer you will politely decline, but take it as a vote of confidence and re-audition next year? I mean, if your daughter would be really upset to miss out on the other option this year (I take it it's some other kind of residential thing but non-auditioned, or not to do with performing?) then isn't that your answer anyway? I don't want to offend anyone here, but whilst I wouldn't turn down a place at NYMT because they are much smaller and cast for specific roles and shows, and you might not get an offer another year, I think if you get into BYMT you've met the standard and have a pretty decent chance of being successful another time.

Mcmumager · 08/01/2023 16:15

@NotEvenSlightlyReasonable

i think that sounds good advice from @Biscuitsneeded . At 12 there will definitely be lots more opportunities and many years to do BYMT or NYMT and if there is something else she’d rather do this year I’d be more inclined to focus on that and either leave auditioning for a year or just go along for fun.

My ds has done BYMT past two years when aged 15/16 and had the best time. Last year he had the opportunity to do the showcase with NYMT but there was a particular BYMT show he really wanted to be part of so opted for that. This year he has booked an audition for NYMT but as BYMT haven’t released the shows yet he’s not applied. He will decide when they do if there are things he’d love to do if he was successful.

His younger sister opted to do a residential with her friends last year and is likely to do that again this year. She may audition for BYMT but being with her friends at a musical theatre college is also attractive to her.

There isn’t a right or wrong and at 12 your dd has plenty of time to try everything!

Mcmumager · 08/01/2023 16:16

@Biscuitsneeded is it college applications for your ds this year? I think that’s a whole new level of nerves! Good luck and I hope the wine rack is full 😂

Biscuitsneeded · 08/01/2023 16:48

@Mcmumager , thank you, very kind of you to remember! DS wants Acting, not MT, for his degree, even though he loves MT, and he's been a bit slow to get his applications going but they are nearly all in now and we await the next few months with some trepidation. Wine will certainly be needed, and big boy pants to deal with the rejections! Thank you for thinking of us, and lots of luck to your DS. After not getting to do his NYMT show in 2020 because of Covid, he really deserves to get a show this time! When is he auditioning? I will keep everything crossed for him that this is his year!

Mcmumager · 08/01/2023 17:19

@Biscuitsneeded and acting even tougher than MT! My ds is a year behind yours- he’d thought post covid he’d do acting but has decided he isn’t ready to give up MT so we are trying to find the more acting MT courses for next year.

His NYMT this year is on 21st- it’s like deja vu from 2020- same audition location, same show he wants lol. But what will be will be eh- nothing predictable in this game eh? Looking back I can’t really believe he was cast in it at 14 in 2020- I thought he was so old then!

Biscuitsneeded · 08/01/2023 17:28

@Mcmumager Indeed, can't predict anything! Maybe we should have a separate chat about schools that do the more acting based MT courses, so that we don't derail this thread. It seems there is singing in movement in lots of acting degrees but it's not necessarily geared towards MT - although have seen actor degree courses putting on musicals. DS decided that trained actors do get to do musicals sometimes, but trained MT performers don't often get to do Shakespeare! Loads of luck to your DS on 21st. Think my DS is on 22nd so they will be waiting for news at the same time...

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 08/01/2023 17:54

Thank you Biscuits, great advice and a discussion to have with DD. Good luck to your DS with his applications. That's a very scary time!

Mcmumager, DD's first choice is drama school summer school. She wants to come back feeling as though she's learned loads, not just done a show, had some fun. It's also part of a bigger plan she's got which is all very sensible. Time for a chat and I suspect she'll have fun with the audition and then not want to take it further this year, even if she does get the chance.

Alakazam8 · 12/01/2023 09:41

Morning All- last year I think we posted audition dates and names eg. Mini alakazam8 -28th Jan so we could say good luck and share how they think it went. Anyone feel like doing this again this year?

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 12/01/2023 11:55

@Alakazam8 I'd be up for that. Although mini-NotEvenSlightlyReasonable is larger than the original model, and (I would argue) even less reasonable 😀. After the conversation informed by posters here she's made this her top priority. So no stress then.

Biscuitsneeded · 12/01/2023 13:34

@NotEvenSlightlyReasonable she sounds like mini Biscuits, who is charm personified to the wider world but utterly ungovernable for his mother.

Shall we copy and paste a list, and we can add our DC in audition date order? We can add age if we want to specify, too.

minimits · 12/01/2023 21:35

Hellooooo! Bit late to the party-hope the waiting room is well stocked with biscuits and gin this year! Welcome to anyone new to auditioning to BYMT and NYMT-DS has done BYMT four times and NYMT twice so hapoy to answer any questions!
DS had a brilliant time last year with NYMT and ready to audition again this year. It’s squeezed in between drama school auditions though so fun fun fun🤪

Montimom · 12/01/2023 21:38

Hello 2023 peeps 👋 Back for another year. Will have 3 DDs auditioning for NYMT this year so it’s hard to keep track of who’s doing what!! All audition clips sent and auditioning 21st Jan!! Excited nervous and terrified (that’s just me, not my three DDs who are way too cool to be any of those)

good luck to everyone, oldies and newbies alike 🤗

Lovely to see all the excitement for another year. Hello to all the new people and hello again to all the familiar names!
This year I have 2 of my children auditioning Dd is 18 and has been lucky enough to be in NYMT for a number of years now and DS is 13 and has been involved in some way over the past few years too. Both auditioning on Sunday next.
I also have a number of students auditioning this year too, some who have been there before (and might be here too 😉) and some new. My older DS did the creative mentoring program last year and absolutely loved every minute and may well apply again this year but he likes to leave things to nearer the deadlines to apply!

I have been involved with NYMT as a teacher for 10 years this year and the first of my students who was in West Side Story 10 years ago is currently performing nightly in the West End. I can highly recommend it as a teacher and a parent. I have also had a couple of students do BYMT over the last number of years and they have all had a fabulous experience too.

Auditions this weekend for DS - it's come around quickly! The auditions tend to be ok but it's the waiting to hear afterwards that we find nailbiting! He did his first NYMT season last year, loved it, and is desperate to get in again. Fingers crossed for all our children!

allhailthebrain · 13/01/2023 01:59

Well helloooooo Dears! (if you didn't say that like Mrs Doubtfire, you're not trying!)

Thank you for the tipoff in my inbox that this thread existed - you know who you are!

I can't really say too much, my child would be extremely identifiable if I was to say what they've done before! So I'll just say hello to the newbies and wave to the "we've been here before - pass the wine" gang!

My kid has done NYMT the last two years and I can truly say it's been pretty life changing, certainly the first time. It absolutely cemented what they want to do. Last year BYMT also made two offers, but in the end the decision was made to decline. At the moment only intending to audition for NYMT, probably Manchester. If nothing suits, then we'll see after that.

As others have said, from our experience - BYMT is easier to get into than NYMT because they do more shows and they don't specifically cast roles till the group get together. It feels a little like they have a standard, then they fill their shows, and if they have more people at that standard, then they add some more shows! NYMT have their 3 shows, showcase and new musical workshop - and that's it. You either are right for those shows or you're not - and I know people who's have anything from a principal part in one year down to not even a recall in another year. You have to fit. BYMT give results later than NYMT. Both of them could do with doing it a LOT earlier frankly, so families can play holidays - or is that just me...?

@Montimom I thought you told me your 3 were doing Manchester? Isn't that the 28th, not the 21st...?

Is anyone else the teensiest bit nervous about NYMT losing Kylie and how it's all going to happen without her!

I don't know who was listening carefully at the Christmas concert but Jeremy said that 'Armchair' was happening in Leicester! That surprised me if I'm honest as I assumed KMK would get the 'star venue' so to speak but he definitely said it...

Alakazam8 · 13/01/2023 05:37

And minikazam8, age 13 auditioning 28th in Manchester!!

im a bit concerned about the loss of Kylie, giant boots to fill there…
I expected armchair to def be a London show so surprised by that too!
