Ok, I know we technically haven't finished 2022 yet as there is still the Christmas Concert for some (my ds is not taking part due to his conservatoire concert) but NYMT have released details of their 2023 season & auditions here

Good luck everyone whose dc are applying this year

Although I am not sure if using Arts Ed as a venue would mean you have to arrange your own accommodation whi

Biscuitsneeded · 16/04/2023 12:15

Whoops. I meant to say, which makes it less attractive if you're not based in London.

minimits · 16/04/2023 13:00

Yes I think there are lots of NYMT creatives who work with Arts Ed already so makes sense. And it’s a great performance space and easy to get to.

allhailthebrain · 16/04/2023 13:09

The courses they do are never auditioned ones if that helps at all - fully accessible to all.
I found the vast majority of summer courses don’t have a residential option when I was looking last year so maybe they’ve decided it’s best to be cheaper and not offer residential… Arts Ed didn’t have a residential option for the course we did - and you’re right, it does make it a lot harder when you’re not in London!

Triflefan · 16/04/2023 13:12

I’m not sure why it would be any less accessible to all.
I did wonder if there would be more info re the accommodation side of things. Whether perhaps there’s an option to use local halls at an additional cost or whether you just have to sort it yourself. Otherwise, dropping off and picking up daily probably makes it more appealing to locals.

Is this in addition to the usual summer workshops or instead of?

Mcmumager · 16/04/2023 14:11

I thought it was interesting that it was only to age 14. Might have considered it for dd but she’s older. She didn’t audition for BYMT and NYMT so we’ve been looking at course. At 15 there aren’t too many residential choices- she did one last year with dreadful chaperones and very little food provided so I’m a bit more wary. She was craving vegetables by the end lol

Comefromaway · 16/04/2023 15:37

My daughter did residential courses at Bird (which she loved) & Tring (which she didn’t).

My daughter did residential courses at Bird (which she loved) & Tring (which she didn’t).

I did contact bird - they said mix of host families and chaperoned spaces and it seemed you book then they let you know what they’ve allocated you. They said the age 14 and under would have chaperone in the same flat. Nothing mentioned for 15+ and I know she wouldn’t want a host family.

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 16/04/2023 19:21

@Mcmumager my DD is doing a chaperoned residential this summer in London, West End Stage. I have no idea whether it will be any good as she hasn't done it yet!

We looked at Tring and it wasn't what she wanted at all so discounted that but I've heard good things about it if it is what they want.

Alakazam8 · 16/04/2023 22:24

@Biscuitsneeded thanks for pointing me in that direction- that’s reassuring. I’m not sure if it would be any less accessible I was just trying to explain my initial thoughts when I saw that, prob just because of the unknown arts Ed bit but not really grounded in any experience, just a feeling that others may/may not share.

minimits · 16/04/2023 22:32

DS was at Arts so happy to answer any questions if I can help at all!

Mcmumager · 16/04/2023 23:05

@NotEvenSlightlyReasonable my friends daughter did the west end one the past two years and had an absolute ball- I think she is doing it again this year.

She said it’s probably not as intense as my daughter would want particular in terms of dance but it sounds like an amazing week.

Alakazam8 · 17/04/2023 10:39

Seen today, they are still offering residential at Sevenoaks which tbh would probably be my choice if dd was to do one next year. @minimits will pm you to ask about Arts, thanks for offering that information.

allhailthebrain · 17/04/2023 12:30

To clarify, NYMT still has a full residential course available at Sevenoaks in the summer too. This is advertised as 11+ and has full pastoral care.
So the partnership with Arts Ed is a separate thing, which is positive news, options!

Mumofamusician · 19/04/2023 06:54

Have any musicians had confirmation that they are playing for the concerts/showcases yet? DC said yes she was available and would like to, but has heard nothing further about the showcase yet.

disorganisedmummy · 19/04/2023 07:35

Is this the one on 27th August?

Mumofamusician · 19/04/2023 08:15

Yes and July 8th at Kingston. There are 2 dates for the showcase this year and we are holding both, plus potential dates in half term for a band call and sitz.

disorganisedmummy · 19/04/2023 08:20

Ah ok, yes ds (viola) has been asked if he's available for both those dates. He can't do 8th July as he has Junior Trinity end of year concert but can make 27th Aug. Didn't know about May half term which is annoying as we're away.

Comefromaway · 19/04/2023 09:34

Ds has been asked to definitely play but

  1. He was AMD for it last year
  2. He is a keyboard player with strong sight-reading & Mainstage programming skills which is particularly needed for this show
  3. They are short of people with that specific skill set

Earlier in the thread someone mentioned 4th June as being the potential Sitz date. I hope it is that date as he is not available the weekend before.

Mumofamusician · 19/04/2023 09:41

Good to know @Comefromaway. DC also has keys and MainStage experience but is booked to play her other instrumental area on the summer show but has said she’s happy to play any of her instruments for the concerts. June 4th is the last day of half term, I presume then the band call will be Saturday June 3rd or the Sunday the week before?

Comefromaway · 19/04/2023 09:50

Last year concert band call was the day before Sitz, splitting them up would not be practical for us as it would be two separate journeys transporting a LOT of tech from Staffordshire to London! Plus ds is playing at a Festival the Saturday before and to get to London for 10am would mean a VERY early start after a very late night. (Last year dh drove him down overnight).

So we shall see. Ds has told them he would like to play but is not available that weekend (it was a music festival running over the weekend his band knew they had a spot at but were only given the exact date a couple of weeks ago)

Ok I've taken one for the team and sent an email to ask re: showcase musicians as we are holding the dates too and DC super keen... will let you know!

Comefromaway · 20/04/2023 09:46
