Ok, I know we technically haven't finished 2022 yet as there is still the Christmas Concert for some (my ds is not taking part due to his conservatoire concert) but NYMT have released details of their 2023 season & auditions here

Good luck everyone whose dc are applying this year

Thanks @Mumster40 😊

I would say from experience that if your child is a fussy eater (like mine) then do pack snacks as boarding school food pretty much assumes that you will eat anything (dietary requirements aside).

As he was over 18 my son went off site every day to get at least one meal from local takeaways etc but that isn't possible for younger children.

@Comefromaway I think there is usually plenty of choice, especially at Sevenoaks. Mine is also quite fussy but can usually find something he will eat, and in fact in the past discovered quite a few foods he wouldn't have eaten at home, but decided to try in Sevenoaks and then found he liked after all! But agreed, snacks are important, especially as tea can be quite early and they might get hungry again before bed!

yodaforpresident · 21/03/2023 10:12

Also a few questions about mobile phones - it seems like it it will be up to the child to be sensible with them unless you would like them removed at bedtime - if so you need to email pastoral to ask them.

Comefromaway · 21/03/2023 10:16

He ate nothing last year at either Tonbridge or Uppingham apart from hash browns at breakfast, bread, plain pasta one day, plain rice another day and one day he ate the yorkshire pudding from the roast dinner (Tonbridge would not let him have extra to compensate) .

He does to be fair, have a very restricted diet.

Thank you @Quitelikeacatslife - I did think this might be the case but it's a little unclear as the dates outlined in the show offer go two days beyond the performance date on the website, but I suppose everything is still being sorted out. I have emailed them to ask however I suspect that they are quite busy at the moment.

yodaforpresident · 21/03/2023 10:18

DD rates the vegetarian food at Uppingham if that's an option @Comefromaway.

Alakazam8 · 21/03/2023 10:30

Can only echo what come from away said above in terms of food. There isn’t really much choice so would be handy to bring extra snacks. Could be wrong about this but think younger kids can go to local shops if you give permission, perhaps in a group. I’m sure some did during showcase rehearsals. There was also a snack table set up in the rehearsal room which was emptied in a couple of days!!

Comefromaway · 21/03/2023 11:15

Tonbridge (where Showcase rehearsals were held last year) was definitely worse than Uppingham was with very little flexibility from the catering staff (no experience of Sevenoaks yet) .

Ds isn't vegitarian but he doesn't eat proper meat due to texture issues.

thanks for the reminder - have just booked some for armchair x

allhailthebrain · 21/03/2023 14:50

Just to put in our experience - mine was 13 for first show and spent two full weeks at Sevenoaks with no gap.

He ate well, loved the food and seemed to enjoy the variety. I seem to remember a time or two where they put in some money each and ordered a pizza late at night - they definitely get the munchies!

Mine definitely put on weight despite all the exercise so if your kid isn't a fussy eater, chances are they'll be fine! I used to tell mine to take something (e.g. fruit) from breakfast to keep as a morning snack and so on.

yodaforpresident · 21/03/2023 14:59

For those of you whose children have taken part in the concert performance before - what time do NYMT usually ask the children to arrive by on the day?

Comefromaway · 21/03/2023 15:01

I think it was 10am. We travelled up the night before because as AMD ds had to be there earlier but his friend travelled up from Stoke on the train and was on time.

yodaforpresident · 21/03/2023 15:17

Thank you @Comefromaway. Was that for an afternoon performance?

Comefromaway · 21/03/2023 15:25

Evening. They had a full tech run in the day and the show started at 7pm

OP posts:
yodaforpresident · 21/03/2023 15:47

Hmm, I wonder if they expect you earlier if it's a 4pm show? Though, I'm not sure earlier than 10am on a Sunday in London is feasible.

Comefromaway · 21/03/2023 15:53

Is the 27th August a 4pm show?

OP posts:
yodaforpresident · 21/03/2023 16:15

yes

Alakazam8 · 21/03/2023 16:44

Definitely 10am start for showcase day @yodaforpresident . Don’t think it would ever be before 10 but last year the full tech was really down to the wire apparently and some parts were not rehearsed. (Flight cases, if you know you know!!)

yodaforpresident · 21/03/2023 18:39

Eek, that sounds a bit nerve-racking.

Comefromaway · 21/03/2023 18:41

Someone had to drop out last year very last minute do a couple of solos etc had to be re-allocated which probably didn’t help.

Poking a BYMT head up again, has anyone on the reserve list heard anything yet? Trying to work out whether it's not yet or not likely 🤣

I know a PP said upthread that the deadline to accept an offer from the first round was last Friday, would they usually be quick to juggle the reserve list and make offers or does it take longer?

yodaforpresident · 21/03/2023 20:17

Yes, we have @NotEvenSlightlyReasonable for The Naughty Carriage on the Orphan Train.
