Ok, I know we technically haven't finished 2022 yet as there is still the Christmas Concert for some (my ds is not taking part due to his conservatoire concert) but NYMT have released details of their 2023 season & auditions here

Congratulations musicians! 😊

yodaforpresident · 18/03/2023 10:00

Congratulations to all the musicians! Only two weeks until Easter….

Montimom · 18/03/2023 11:09

Congrats to all of the talented musicians!! Can’t wait to hear some of you. Dd3 workshopped armchair last year and the music is amazing!! Jordan Li is a genius ❤️ and Dd1 really looking forward to it.

Funny the twists and turns, DD1 workshopped Henrietta and DD3 performed it. And DD3 workshopped Armchair and DD1 performing in it 😂

filchards · 18/03/2023 13:00

thanks for the info on the music for Armchair. We're not music theatre experts but 2 of our DC have enjoyed playing in the bands in the past (couple of shows each plus showcase, Xmas etc). We know Jordan from previous shows and he's great. My DC did Ragtime last year and just loved the music and the camaraderie and would be naturally disappointed if it didn't live up to that. As I say, MT isn't a musical genre we know anything about, but I think DC was a bit put off by the new musical last year (we went to watch) and now thinks all new musicals are like that. Which ain't necessarily so but ...

I think - for DC - Ragtime is a hard one to follow as it was just so bloody superb in every way. Other DCs first show was also the best they've done which makes everything else hard to follow.

But - hey - first world problems. They're in and we're looking forward to another NYMT summer. What I won't be doing this year is booking a motorway hotel on the M1 after the last night at the Curve. In a heatwave. Worst night of my life! We laugh about it now ...

minimits · 18/03/2023 13:24

DC was in the new musical last year and I would say there were some really beautiful bits of music in there-it really needed another week to work on it all and pull it all together and tweak it here and there. Sounds like Armchair is going to be absolutely stunning!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 18/03/2023 13:40

@filchards I suspect our DC know each other...

allhailthebrain · 18/03/2023 15:54

@sleepisoverrated1 our kids must know each other then! Mine was also in the Armchair workshop :)

I would say, I think that this is going to be a very well done 'new show'. It's been workshopped three times in total - I know the NYMT one was the most productive. It's also been pitched for BEAM (a big showcase for new musicals) - and was accepted. Normally you get a 10 minute segment, this piece has been given 25 minutes! I believe JLS is incredibly dedicated to his first ever musical - and he's worked incredibly closely with the author too. I'd recommend giving the book a read! I wish I could see it this year, I'm very sad to leave it behind (as happy as the kid is to be doing KMK, obviously!).

Those in it are in for a treat I think!

Biscuitsneeded · 18/03/2023 16:45

@filchards my DS was in Ragtime last year (cast, not band) and I agree that it was something special, BUT he has also been in several NYMT new musicals and they have also sounded incredible. I think the new musical last year was quite a particular thing and perhaps on first listen wasn't quite as likely to grab the audience as some more traditional MT, but I can vouch for the fact that NYMT have produced some stunning new musicals that any band member would love to play on. If your DC have Spotify, I would recommend giving the cast recordings of Imaginary, Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Billy the Kid or Henrietta a listen. All quite different in style but I think they will be impressed. DS is in the Armchair cast this year and I think there will be a real buzz around being part of it. J L-S is so talented and I really think it will be magical.

Alakazam8 · 18/03/2023 19:03

yes @Biscuitsneeded . There has been a buzz about armchair from the start and certainly was the one a lot of kids wanted.
it has some really fun characters, one in particular has been talked about a lot!
Henrietta has a cast album if anyone wants a listen!! A lot of the songs from other new musicals by NYMT were in the concert last year and were great! Dd loved Battle Of boat and several others!!

Biscuitsneeded · 18/03/2023 20:40

@Alakazam8 ahhhh Battle of Boat was my DS' first ever NYMT show and I still have a CD of the cast recording although it glitches a bit now. Sadly the full version hasn't been put on Spotify though. But yes, you can listen to lots of the others. Happy memories!

Alakazam8 · 18/03/2023 22:18

@Biscuitsneeded dd loved ‘what we get up to’ we still sing our own version of it at home if shes in trouble. It’s lovely to have these memories of shows they’ve done!!
I’m sure your ds will have an amazing time in Armchair this year- I know of a couple dc in it who were in showcase concert with dd last year so hope to hear lots about it!!

sleepisoverrated1 · 18/03/2023 22:22

@allhailthebrain yes, they do! DS was the littlest one last year - you'll know who. He was pleased to hear that your DC got KMK so he'll see him again in Sevenoaks.

Link to original cast recording of Henrietta, new musical with a gorgeous Musical score

(if it works)

allhailthebrain · 19/03/2023 01:35

@sleepisoverrated1 ahh then yes I presume I know exactly who yours is! The only sadness of this year is having aged out of the part played last year, which was wonderful. Always knew from the point of being offered it last year though, that it would not be a possibility when it became a show - even got a phone call about it at the time! Sometimes you're just born a year too soon - mine has a habit of it, too many near misses for various (non NYMT) things!😏

However, a wonderful memory to bank, and know that you've been a part of. I know this year will be too, just as Henrietta was. One excited kid, raring to go! But I take no responsibility if they join in with the songs at break times 😂

disorganisedmummy · 19/03/2023 15:12

So all change here! Ds (viola) had been given KMK which he was thrilled about but then this morning he received an email from Jeremy asking is he could do Armchair instead as the Orchestrator has seen him play and has specifically asked for him as the part demands a good solo player. He's so gobsmacked. He knows Doesanyonehaveamap's ds so that will be great.

Comefromaway · 19/03/2023 15:41

Which considering the orchestrator is the MD of Cabaret on the West End is high praise indeed

Doesanyonehaveamap Oh wow!! That's v high praise! And sorry I referred to your dd as a ds!!🤦‍♀️

yodaforpresident · 20/03/2023 13:14

Does anyone know how the mechanics of how the BYMT shows operate - are the performances typically at the end of the 15 days?

Yes usually evenings and couple of matinees on the last 3/4 days usually ending with matinee on the last day in my experience

Mumster40 · 20/03/2023 15:51

Does anyone know whether the pastoral care zoom meeting tonight will be a group meeting with all participants on camera? Or will it just be the organisers on camera with parents asking questions via text? I’m trying to work out if I have to bother putting make up on or not…..!😂
Also - is anyone’s child sitting in on the meeting?

Biscuitsneeded · 20/03/2023 16:28

@Mumster40 I'm sure they won't force you to put your camera on! And mine is too old but if he were young and it was his first time doing NYMT I would let him sit in on it, yes!

Operasingerkath · 20/03/2023 22:29

Hi, what did I miss at the pastoral meeting? I had a rehearsal myself tonight and left my husband with strict instructions how to log on and he forgot!

sleepisoverrated1 · 20/03/2023 22:32

Yes, we weren't able to make it either. I wondered whether they might have recorded it?

Mumster40 · 21/03/2023 07:02

It was very informal and just a chance to ask questions. It wasn’t a ‘talk’. There were lots of questions about whether to pack snacks… (yes you can if you like) and whether children would be sharing a room (yes, very likely). Rooms would be allocated by age, gender and show. Some boarding houses and shows have different configurations. If there are any concerns to email pastoral care directly. Also insights from an experienced NYMT Mum which was very nice. Everyone seemed very friendly and rating to go!

Mumster40 · 21/03/2023 07:08

raring to go….😬
