So, with BYMT auditions already underway and NYMT open for booking, it's surely time for a 2022 thread?? Who's in?

Submitted DD's NYMT actor self-tape and booked her audition today, eek! Need to also get her musician audition recorded this side of Christmas as we go on hols on 27th and she's back to school on 4/5th (PCR dependent 🙈)

I don't know the answer about whether or not you have to transport your own drum kit etc, but it's a question I am sure they would answer for you very quickly if you ping them an email.

Montimom · 26/04/2022 18:19

A friends DS played drums last year and I know he definitely did not bring his own

Thank you. That would be so much easier if so and means we can assist with transport for ds’s friend.

He has emailed them I know but Ds hasn’t seen him today.

Ok, anyone else joining me in the waiting room for NYT? It's been soooooo loooooong now, I'm wilting!

We submitted in the first batch - so January! Results are next month for both batches. Anyone else starting to feel that familiar nervousness...?

Biscuitsneeded · 27/04/2022 08:29

@allhailthebrain Me, I'll join you! I'm not really sure I would want DS to get a place this year as can't really afford NYT and NYMT, but for various other reasons this would kind of be a good year for him, should he be so lucky. The dates just about work with his NYMT show, and he's going to be in Year 13 and applying for post 18 in the next academic year (probably acting as opposed to MT), so doing NYT this summer would be a boost for that. He knows the chances of getting in are slim, and he also knows a place at drama school for acting at 18 is unlikely, so I hope he's feeling robust for the next 12 months or so! When do you think they will hear? DS did an in person audition at school and he thinks they said 11th May. Is that your understanding too? I guess the dates would work for your DS alongside NYMT too? Fingers crossed!

allhailthebrain · 27/04/2022 16:47

Hi @Biscuitsneeded !
Mine is just 14 so the first time of trying for the youngest spots. Not sure what chances that gives him! It was a fully digital recall here, we weren't given an in person option.
The recall sounded interesting, I kind of wish I had asked around to know what was coming as it seems their standard way of doing it! But he seemed to think it went well so we'll see...
I believe, I can double check, but I believe all results are May 11th...

Biscuitsneeded · 27/04/2022 17:17

@allhailthebrain I think this year the auditions were nearly all online, but they are willing to go into schools if there is a teacher who can get a group together. DS was very lucky, as his former drama teacher from his secondary school had organised a NYT audition day, and she invited him back to take part (he's at 6th form college now). I don't know if it's outreach or whether any school can invite them. DS definitely happier to have auditioned in person but you just never know how it will all pan out. A friend of ours got in two years ago from an online recall. She then had to do the entire summer course online, which I don't think DS would have liked! We'll see. I'm glad you have the same date as me. I'm just looking forward to having some certainty. We've got tickets to see NYMT'S Chess as DS has lots of friends in that, so a bit of me hopes he doesn't get NYT so he can still watch that!

allhailthebrain · 27/04/2022 18:45

Double checked and it's definitely 11th May.

We put down for the digital course because we thought it was likely to clash with NYMT - and now it doesn't. So if lucky enough to get in, we will likely ask straight away to go on a waiting list for any places that come up on the residential.

It does seem tough, we know several other boys a similar age who didn't get recalls - this definitely isn't a case of "easier if you're a boy" like some things are accused of! We can only cross our fingers...

I was chatting to someone with a dd who had a recall yesterday and the things they were asked to do with their monologues were wildly different, which was quite interesting. They obviously want to see how they adapt. For example one of ours was doing it as a stand up comedian where as one of hers was the person kept going out of sight on her wheely chair, from the screen, and she had to do things to get her attention back. So I do kind of wish I'd known that was how they did it, but I'm hoping he did a good enough job without - he seemed to enjoy it and thought it went well. He did get asked to do his second piece and was asked whether he would prefer residential or digital at the end (even though we already filled that in on the form).

I just want to know now 🙃

Biscuitsneeded · 27/04/2022 21:37

@allhailthebrain my DS had to do his monologue as stand up too!

allhailthebrain · 27/04/2022 22:50

@Biscuitsneeded I can only be glad I'm a lover of stand up, and at some point he must have seen enough snippets to get the genre 😅

allhailthebrain · 08/05/2022 21:39

Very exciting that the Showcase cast will be performing at the Sondheim Theatre - Shaftesbury Avenue people! Bravo!

Biscuitsneeded · 09/05/2022 07:53

And not only are Showcase cast performing at the Sondheim Theatre, they will be supporting the the 12 finalists in the student Sondheim awards, which every year seem to include several graduating students who go on to become very well known in the industry. And this year 6 out of 12 of them are NYMT alumni!

DC is a showcase musician and hasn’t had this info! Can you share more? TIA

Biscuitsneeded · 09/05/2022 10:26

@Mumofamusician I'm not really qualified to answer this as DS isn't involved, but I expect the showcase musicians aren't needed for this. It's a Sondheim Society event and they presumably have a band ready to accompany all the finalists, so may not need the NYMT musicians on this occasion. But I could be wrong! I wouldn't panic if you haven't heard anything though as that may well be why.

Comefromaway · 09/05/2022 11:57

The Sondheim Society are providing one accompanist to play for all the competitors and the NYMT piece.

Comefromaway · 09/05/2022 12:47

Ds is going to be exhausted for Band Call. He finishes a week of shows on the Saturday night then will be travelling down to London from the North West as soon as he is off stage, ready for Band Call on Sunday morning!

There are no trains so dh will be driving him!

nearlyhomealone · 09/05/2022 13:13

Very exciting for the Showcase team.
My DC is hoping Ragtime will be at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. Figures it will be empty after the Cinderella closure and ALW as an NYMT patron may want to gift it as a goodwill gesture 😀.
I’ve said I doubt the theatre business works like that !!!

Comefromaway · 09/05/2022 13:15

In the past they have often used The Other Palace but of course ALW doesn't own that now.

Biscuitsneeded · 09/05/2022 18:40

@nearlyhomealone Haha, wouldn't that be nice?! It's such a shame about The Other Palace - wretched Heathers 😆!! I think we may have to be reasonable with expectations for the London venue this summer. It can't be an easy thing to pull off a theatre that nobody's using for 2 weeks, at a price that a charity can afford.... Wherever it is, I'm sure the shows will be amazing, and that's what matters.

allhailthebrain · 10/05/2022 01:15

I could be way off, obviously, but my money is on the Michael Croft Theatre again this year... I was hoping Bill Kenwright would have looked favourably upon continuing the NYMT summer performances there, but from what I've heard, Heathers seems to keep extending which would make that unlikely?
It is a bit of a shame because it's further out which means the audiences are then predominantly friends and family, rather than London theatregoers. Harder to sell to the public/casual acquaintances. However, it is a beautiful theatre!

I believe two of the Sondheim finalists are principals from 'Henrietta' 😍

Unless Heathers moves into the Gillian Lynn, it’s a bigger venue…….

allhailthebrain · 10/05/2022 20:24

True, @Mumofamusician - but it's a HUGE venue. Even more than the run it did at the Haymarket. I'm assuming if Heathers is consistently filling TOP, he'll want to keep it there?

Latest rumour I've heard for the GL is Bedknobs and Broomsticks - but who knows!
