NYMT/BYMT 2022

So, with BYMT auditions already underway and NYMT open for booking, it's surely time for a 2022 thread?? Who's in?

Submitted DD's NYMT actor self-tape and booked her audition today, eek! Need to also get her musician audition recorded this side of Christmas as we go on hols on 27th and she's back to school on 4/5th (PCR dependent 🙈)

@Mumofamusician I'm not sure why you think there are less opportunities for musicans this year? There were only 3 shows last year, so even if (and it is an if) there aren't separate musicians for the Showcase, then that's still the same number of shows and opportunities as 2021...
Sending good luck to you and all the parents of musicians :)

Re: BYMT discussion about them holding people, that does seem mean, and not good for confidence! Mine was offered a show but turned it down because it clashes with NYMT which was offered first. We know two NYMT people from last year who have accepted that same show. We have subsequently had an email saying he's on a reserve list as they seem keen to place him on another show. This obviously appears different to the holding emails as they've said he'll get a place if someone drops out.

Bernardscheesyhat · 04/04/2022 17:46

We had an offer from BYMT shortly after I posted previously, so it may be that they are trying to place everyone sooner than I thought.

Mumofamusician · 05/04/2022 15:26

@allhailthebrain there are less opportunities then when DC was offered a musician place in 2020, there were 4 full shows that year each with their own musicians.

Biscuitsneeded · 05/04/2022 15:46

@Mumofamusician there may have been 4 shows planned for 2020, but none of them would have had a band anything like the size of that of Hunchback last year (also 3 shows but easily as many musician places as before, if not more). We should probably wait and see what size the orchestra ends up being for Chess.

Comefromaway · 05/04/2022 18:35

I also think that opportunities for musicians also really depends on what you play. Viola & bassoon players are always going to be more in demand than violinists or flautists for example.

MTI offer 2 options of orchestrations for Chess with a lot of stuff being covered on 3 keyboards. But anyone who knows the more recent concert version knows that orchestration was vastly expanded. Whether they choose to re-orchestrate the available parts more in line with the concert version is anybodys guess.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 06/04/2022 06:45

Also I don't think they are overwhelmed with musician applications on the whole- maybe for some of the more popular instruments but the deadline was extended to encourage more applications and certainly last year they were still looking to fill gaps right up until just before Hunchback started!

DS went off to NYMT today. We drove via the station to pick up one of his friends and enjoyed spotting young people pulling suitcases through town to get to the rehearsal venue. Theatre kids are so easy to spot! (Would have given more a lift but only have a small car). Have heard nothing, which I assume is good news. Looking forward to hearing everyone's updates from their DC.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 09/04/2022 22:03

Wishing them all a wonderful time! Showcase kids are just over half way through and having a complete blast!!

I was doing the spotting kids with suitcases on my way back to the station last week. We’d fine down the night before due to distance. And we met doesanybodyhaveamap junior!

Good luck to all those starting the courses this weekend.

Ds is having a fantastic time, mentally exhausting but fun. The only thing he doesn’t like is the food. He isn’t eating any of the food provided at the school but because he’s over 18 is allowed to go into town to get food. Luckily it’s only 10 mins walk away.

I predict a lot of sleeping on Wednesday.

Biscuitsneeded · 10/04/2022 18:31

@dancingclassicist How's your DD getting on? Hope she's settling in and enjoying it.

BrightBlueCast · 11/04/2022 16:39

arrrggghhhh! Got a musician offer for one of mine for Chess but it clashes with something else (which I told them about on the application form) and it's not the instrument they wanted either. And nothing yet for my other child. I guess they're emailing one show at a time, or ...?

Certainly not in a position to answer within 24 hours. Any chance of getting someone on the phone for a quick chat, do you think? Small team of very busy people!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 11/04/2022 16:54

Ooh good to know news is coming out but sorry it's not what you hoped...

OP posts:
BrightBlueCast · 11/04/2022 17:19

I think we'll be accepting. I'll need to fly out and bring child home from their other engagement, whilst directing DH off in the other direction with instruments and luggage. The things we do!

Comefromaway · 11/04/2022 19:28

I guess the issue with getting anyone on the phone is I think most of them are at Tonbridge or Sevenoaks.

I think (but don’t quote me) that each MD is responsible for their own band. So if for example they know they need x instrument in Chess and they only have a few applications but they need y instrument in Cinderella which is more common then I guess offers will be made at slightly different times.

I guess if two of them want the same instrumentalist then they have to argue!

allhailthebrain · 12/04/2022 00:21

Hope everyone is enjoying/has enjoyed rehearsals!

Agreed on the above comments re: musicians. Having been involved pre-covid, during and now 'after' (we hope!) I don't believe the number of opportunities has changed as the orchestras for each one have been bigger than they were before. I can literally look at the band list for a show in 2020 and that same show's band list for 2021 and it was bigger. And that's before you take into account this new thing they seem to be doing last year and this, where they go BIG with the first show of the year... In truth, they will need the income from the musicians too, so I don't see them cutting that down. I just think they are being tentative with the Showcase having this 'tour' sort of element to it. If all is well next year I suspect that 4th show will be back to having its own band again, and more dates. Just educated guesses!

Yr10mom · 12/04/2022 06:49

morning and well done for the first musician place! guess they are going show by show as lots haven’t heard yet but hopefully today 🤞

BrightBlueCast · 12/04/2022 07:05

I emailed and lovely man called me right back! Yes, doing show by show ...

doesanybodyhaveamap · 12/04/2022 07:07

Really hope it is today. Would like to know one way or the other now. Although if it's a no today that might not be immediatelypassed on to DD who will already be super emotional at the end of Showcase rehearsals!!!

disorganisedmummy · 12/04/2022 07:30

Really hoping for news today too. If ds doesn't get in we may look at BYMT. If anyone has any experience of it I'd be grateful for your comments. Good luck everyone. 🤞🏻

Comefromaway · 12/04/2022 08:05

Hope everyone gets the news they want today.

If it is a no then Ds is living proof that they DO remember you and if you are not right for a project one year, the next might be totally different.

Biscuitsneeded · 12/04/2022 08:30

@Comefromaway absolutely. How is your DS getting on? Kudos to him for persisting and not taking umbrage at not being picked last year. This industry is brutal, and although it's a blow not to get things, it's important they have resilience for the nos, and then the yeses seem even sweeter! I hope he's enjoying it all and is glad he had another go.

BrightBlueCast · 12/04/2022 08:33

@doesanybodyhaveamap are you waiting for cast or musician announcement?

I wasn’t going to share the news immediately with DS yesterday as it wasn’t simple good news - wrong show, wrong instrument. I was literally sitting cogitating at my desk, pondering various possible scenarios and within minutes he was on WhatsApp to me asking if there was any news as he’d had a message from another band member he knows. So I had to come clean. He’s not even at home but away on a course and in rehearsals. Social media catches us out!

Spent a late night looking at flights and hotels to get us from A to
B. Waiting for my husband to start rolling his eyes about the cost....

Was wondering if other DS would be messaging to see if I have news (also away in a course) but he’s so laid back he’s probably completely forgotten all about it. Waiting to see if he’s been offered one of the others as obvs not in Chess

Fingers crossed for everyone waiting.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 12/04/2022 08:37

She's in the cast for showcase but we are also waiting on musician news...

He is having the time of his life. And being on the creatives scheme this year is so much more suitable for him than it would have been had he been a keys player last year for various reasons.

He was contacted last year by a friend of a friend who works for BYMT who saw a video he put on social media asking him if he had considered applying to their creatives MD scheme, so we knew the potential was there but they didn't realise that last year he was too young (and mentally etc he would have been too young last year.)

Biscuitsneeded · 12/04/2022 13:05

@Comefromaway that's brilliant. Really glad to hear it's all worked out for your DS.
