So, with BYMT auditions already underway and NYMT open for booking, it's surely time for a 2022 thread?? Who's in?

Submitted DD's NYMT actor self-tape and booked her audition today, eek! Need to also get her musician audition recorded this side of Christmas as we go on hols on 27th and she's back to school on 4/5th (PCR dependent 🙈)

Obviously not heard about musician place yet either!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 02/04/2022 18:53

Showcase will have musicians but they will pull them from the other shows - so some musicians will be on a summer show plus showcase.

At the moment only fixed date for showcase is 9/7 - there should be at least one other tbc. Musicians won't be needed at Easter for sure.

Thank you @doesanybodyhaveamap

Good to know!

I didn’t realise they would be pulling them from other shows. I do know it’s quite a large band, Ds is quite excited as it will be the biggest ensemble he’s ever been part of.
Comefromaway · 02/04/2022 20:14

I’m assuming band call for Showcase will be daytime of 9th. We certainly haven’t been given any other dates yet anyway.

Yr10mom · 03/04/2022 07:25

oh that is interesting re Showcase - so musicians will just rehearse on the day (given it’s still term time)?

Comefromaway · 03/04/2022 10:08

I don’t actually know. However they will need to let people know soon as some schools will be scheduling end of term concerts/shows around those sort of dates so may not let their students out.

It’s still term time for Ds at the moment, but he’s applied for time off college & as he has compulsory work experience as part of his course he is using next week’s rehearsal week for that.

So actually this is less opportunities for musicians this year, it reads like there are 4 productions which require players, but it’s only 3 shows plus some players will get an additional opportunity. This is a real shame as it could have provided additional spaces for musicians to develop musical theatre skills, but if it’s taking place in term time and potentially only rehearsals on the day then this will be down to being a good sight reader which is something not required for the audition. Now I’m confused about how they are going to select musicians.
doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/04/2022 16:33

The pulling from other shows may not be 100% accurate and I'm sure there'll be some exceptions anyway, particularly given how late in the day it now is for peoples availability for that particular project... but certainly the showcase musicians won't be on the Easter residency (those of us who put in early applications had a holding email saying musicians wouldn't be needed at Easter and outcomes would be shared end of March/beginning of April). A lot of the applicants will have considerable sight reading experience and will be almost 'pros' - given the volume and variety of stuff on the showcase rep list, if I was MD for that show I'd be drawing on those! But pure conjecture...

Also I believe the band for chess is going to be pretty sizeable- on a par with hunchback last year. Which was way bigger than usual (27). So as many opps as usual.

do the cast of the showcase retreats at Easter and then on the day in July? I had assumed originally that the showcase might be end of.summer and they got another weeks rehearsal. But yes I agree amazing sight-reading and experience of.working with performers am essential.for.the musicians I.would have thought, and the timing works better for.post 18s too
Yr10mom · 03/04/2022 16:51

Rehearse not retreat....

doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/04/2022 16:56

Showcase cast rehearse 5-12th April, then on show days. Confirmed show in 9/7 but still waiting on other shows RBC. So it will be pretty intense!

Yes also had that email as an early applicant. Just trying to work out if it’s likely to be a no this year due to only a small number being required and therefore not worth holding on for an answer before making other decks. DC was a yes 2 years ago but show cancelled due to the pandemic of course and didn’t do last year. Just wondering how they are assessing the sight reading experience when this isn’t a criterion, my DC also has considerable high level sight reading experience but wasn’t asked to state this whereas it’s on the BYMT application form.
Mumofamusician · 03/04/2022 17:33

Decisions

doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/04/2022 17:36

@Mumofamusician but they do ask about ensemble experience? So I'd think it would come over in that?? If they got a place 2 years ago I'd think they're in with a pretty good shot again now- 2 years of improvement and all that!!

OP posts:
doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/04/2022 17:44

Anyway I do hope we won't be waiting too much longer!! 😳

OP posts:
Mumofamusician · 03/04/2022 18:00

@doesanybodyhaveamap true, hopefully it’s interpreted from the playing experience. Bymt ask about sight reading on a scale of 1-10 how confident you are! Self assessment but still….!

And definitely 2 years of improvement and growing so fingers crossed.

I do hope they’ll let us all know very soon.

Comefromaway · 04/04/2022 13:29

We are on a train!

dancingclassicist · 04/04/2022 14:05

Hi everyone,
Just a question - my DD is in Chess and is v excited but also a bit nervous, from what I understand and what she’s seen on the FB group most of the cast a) are already halfway through drama school training/graduated and b) have done nymt before and already seem to know everyone. DD is 17 and worried about making friends as it’s her first time and I think has major imposter syndrome!! Anyone have any experience of this/tips?

Biscuitsneeded · 04/04/2022 14:30

@dancingclassicist in every cast there will be people who have done NYMT before and people who haven't. But within 24 hours nobody will remember any of that, as new bonds form and they get busy on the current show. There will be some who are in vocational training but plenty who aren't (yet, or even intending to be). If your DD has been chosen it's because she is good enough. She shouldn't feel worried about that. People will have been chosen for different reasons and she has earned her place. My DS knows he can't sing like some of them can, but he can act. He's also 17 and is at state school and not in vocational training. Sadly he's not in Chess, or I would have asked him to befriend your DD! I wonder if @Montimom might be able to help out here. NYMT is such a friendly place, I promise. Your DD is likely to feel nervous at registration and that's entirely normal, but as soon as they get rehearsing she won't have time to feel nervous and I am sure friendships will be quickly cemented. My DS went for the first time aged just 11 (by one week!) and knowing nobody, but after the initial awkwardness at drop-off he was having the time of his life by teatime.

Biscuitsneeded · 04/04/2022 14:34

That reads like I am saying my DS can't sing, which sounds a bit mean! He can, obviously! But he isn't ever going to be the romantic lead. What I am trying to say is that it's easy to be blinded by other people's background/training and obvious talent, and to feel a degree of impostor syndrome by comparison, but the casts are selected for their blend of talent and your DD has been picked for a reason.

Biscuitsneeded · 04/04/2022 14:36

@Comefromaway I hope your DS has a wonderful time and gets a lot out of the experience.

Montimom · 04/04/2022 15:11

@dancingclassicist absolutely 100% what @Biscuitsneeded has said! The first few days of rehearsals will have them all mixing in no time. My DD turned 18 recently and is also doing Chess! If you want to message me maybe we could figure out a way of getting them in touch.

dancingclassicist · 04/04/2022 15:30

@Biscuitsneeded @Montimom thank you so much! I agree I think it’s just nerves and fear of the unkown - she has never really done anything outside school/dance school but I’m sure it will be the best learning experience for her and of course good to step outside her comfort zone!! Thank you for your wisdom xx
