NYMT/BYMT 2022

So, with BYMT auditions already underway and NYMT open for booking, it's surely time for a 2022 thread?? Who's in?

Submitted DD's NYMT actor self-tape and booked her audition today, eek! Need to also get her musician audition recorded this side of Christmas as we go on hols on 27th and she's back to school on 4/5th (PCR dependent 🙈)

@Mcmumager I do think that these 14/15/16 years are the hardest to get cast! Not old enough to play an adult in the NYMT world, because the ones playing the kids are only a few years younger - and too old to be those kids!

Alakazam8 · 15/02/2022 21:13

Just got the link for preparation for recalls but it’s not letting me in- anybody else tried it?

allhailthebrain · 15/02/2022 21:15

Doesn't work for me either!

dancingclassicist · 15/02/2022 21:16

@Mcmumager so sorry to hear about your DS, everything happens for a reason and his time will come, I’m sure he’s very talented!

dancingclassicist · 15/02/2022 21:17

I’ve just got an email about recall material with links to Dropbox but says I don’t have access?? Has this happened to anyone else?

Alakazam8 · 15/02/2022 21:20

Got in now- was too quick!!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 15/02/2022 21:20

Yes, same here. And @allhailthebrain too.

dancingclassicist · 15/02/2022 21:22

Woop got it!!

Biscuitsneeded · 15/02/2022 21:26

DS has been in touch with Kylie and she knows - don't worry. She's on the case.

allhailthebrain · 15/02/2022 21:30

All working now :)

There's a lot to take in!

Alakazam8 · 15/02/2022 21:44

What do you do if you can’t read music?

allhailthebrain · 15/02/2022 21:48

@Alakazam8 tricky one - maybe put a call out to friends and see if they can record the rough tune for you on piano?

Bear in mind they should still run it on the day. We struggled with this 2 years ago and learned it as best we could, on the day they ran it so he could correct the bits he had slightly wrong.

dancingclassicist · 15/02/2022 21:49

@Alakazam8 am I right in thinking you’re for ragtime and kiss for Cinderella? For ragtime you can find it on Spotify/YouTube etc, but do you know anyone who does read music? You could ask them just to note bash it for you and record it?

Alakazam8 · 15/02/2022 21:50

Ok will ask around…

Triflefan · 15/02/2022 21:52

So sorry to hear that @Mcmumager
It’s definitely worth persevering particularly as your son did so well in person.
Zooming is nobody’s favoured way to audition. Fingers crossed next year is in the room.
@Biscuitsneeded
DS told me when I got in (thanks for keeping me waiting 😆)
He has Ragtime and Cinderella recalls 🙂

Biscuitsneeded · 15/02/2022 22:20

@Triflefan Great news! Well done to him!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/02/2022 09:40

MP3 tracks for Cinderella now in the Dropbox xx

@Mcmumager

I really do feel for those who’ve had to audition on line for schools- can’t imagine how tough that must be. These kids are performers they want an audience!!
I feel your pain. Ds's submission for Leeds Conservatoire really doesn't demonstrate the best of him as a musician. We haven't heard yet, but I'm not holding out much hope. Thankfully Salford is going to be in person.
Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2022 21:48

Totally agree that it must have been a nightmare for those applying for training over the past couple of years and it seems almost everywhere wants a self tape first now. DS is Year 12 so hasn't had to contend with this yet but I fear it's all here to stay and it won't suit him. Apart from the fact that people don't necessarily come across as well, it's all so much more time-consuming, and when all the colleges seem to want different things, it sounds like a total headache!
How are people getting on with the NYMT recall materials?

dancingclassicist · 16/02/2022 22:24

@Biscuitsneeded we’re struggling a bit with Chess. It has a song for each vocal type and the soprano one is Someone Else’s Story - a stunning song but DD sang it at music festival and was told it was too low for her…?? She really struggles with anything remotely low but will give it best shot, if anything she’s more likely to be in the dance ensemble for Chess.

Similarly Ragtime, the song most suited to her is Your Daddy’s Son - a song she absolutely adores. Yet the part is a black woman and I’m concerned whether it’s appropriate? Although the instructions say to go with gender and age so I’m hoping it will be okay? How’s everyone else getting on?

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2022 22:39

@dancingclassicist

I would perhaps email Kylie and ask about the Ragtime question. I think you are absolutely right to question whether Your Daddy's son is appropriate for a white girl to sing, but as you say, there isn't much else - unless she could do Evelyn Nesbitt? DS was recalled for Ragtime when it was going to happen in 2020 and he said a white boy sang Coalhouse's song - he did it very well, and they were nice to him, but the director did say to him not to take that song to drama school auditions as it would be frowned upon, understandably. Personally I would think safer to go with Evelyn Nesbit (who was very young!) but Kylie might be able to check for you.

As for Chess, if that's the song they are suggesting for soprano then I guess just go for it? If it's too low, it's too low. They will still get a sense of your DD and she probably won't be the only one with that issue if there's nothing higher. Unless she is actually up for that specific role it won't necessarily mean they don't want her. It's hard to explain (particularly as I have Covid brain fog today) but the recalls are about getting more of a sense of the auditionees. They know they can all sing, dance and act, so it's about seeing where and how they might slot in - they've already proved their talent to a large extent. The recalls are as friendly and relaxed as they can be so if there's a bit of a song that doesn't quite come off it's not the be all and end all unless in the running for a lead. Hope that helps - tell your DD not to overthink it all too much, as they will know everyone has had limited time to prepare and they want everyone to enjoy the day.

Alakazam8 · 16/02/2022 22:45

Think I’ve pm’d you @dancingclassicist. Not sure if it sent properly though!

dancingclassicist · 16/02/2022 23:04

@biscuitsneeded oh no I hope covid’s not too bad! Thank you for your advice. Realistically I don’t think she’s in the running for any leads so defo for Chess she’ll just do Someone Else’s Story the best she can.

Ragtime defo a tricky one, will email to find out but she’ll probably just learn all the female songs and gauge which is the most appropriate!

Alakazam8 · 16/02/2022 23:27

Heard today dd got into her orchestra too so it’s been a good week for minikazam!

dancingclassicist · 17/02/2022 07:22

@Alakazam8 amazing news!! Pass on my congrats to your DD!!
