Hi, have just joined here so hope I am posting in the correct place. Just wondering if anyone here has a child auditioning for NYMT or similar groups this year.
My DD (age 11 ) is auditioning next sunday

Found it-bizarrely it seems the version for 10-12 is lower than the 13-15 version! Will practise both!

EvilTwins · 17/02/2017 17:18

I suspect the higher key is expected to be sung at tenor pitch rather than treble.

Biscuitsneeded · 18/02/2017 21:06

Hope all today's recalled young people were happy with their day. DS had a great time, and came out smiling. Can't ask for more. How did others get on? We had the pleasure of meeting Aplo and DD! Good luck to those going tomorrow. Think I might need this thread as we wait for news...

EvilTwins · 18/02/2017 21:40

My student isn't sure... he was thrown a bit by the surprise dancing for Imaginary... Also he's under the weather - was in hospital this time last week. Still, fingers crossed for all!

minimits · 18/02/2017 21:46

My DS had fun-was a bit miffed he'd learnt Oogie's part by heart and developed his bearded old man stance and was asked to read for Milo! I gather no one in his group got to read for Oogie in the end-so I guess they had a very clear idea of what they wanted! I got to see the David Hockney exhibition and he had a great time so everything else will be a bonus! Good luck all!

EvilTwins · 18/02/2017 21:56

mini did your DS have to do any tap?

minimits · 18/02/2017 22:05

EvilTwins yes he did-he was in the morning session-luckily he does tap but he did say some of the kids could do triple time steps so he was happy he could manage it at all! Must have been horrendous if they don't do tap-sounds like there were a few surprises!

EvilTwins · 18/02/2017 22:08

Yes, my student doesn't tap and never has, so was totally thrown by that!

minimits · 18/02/2017 22:18

What a mare! Mine was a bit surprised his only acting bit was having to sight read the script-but seemed pretty happy anyway! He wasn't quite expecting to read as Milo as he's 13-guessing that they want an older child for Oogie. And now for the wait! Argh! He'd so live to get in but the standard is obviously amazing!

EvilTwins · 18/02/2017 22:24

To get this far is a real achievement though!

minimits · 18/02/2017 22:28

That's what I've him-although he's so used to getting through to recalls and never being cast he's lost confidence instead of realising how well he's done in a hugely talented and competitive field.

Biscuitsneeded · 19/02/2017 06:56

I'm inclined to think not knowing how to tap won't matter. Most of them won't have known any tap, I suspect. I think it may have been a bit of fun to see who could move and have a go. Imaginary sounds really fun. DS says they're going to write some of the parts around whoever they cast. Fingers crossed for everybody, anyway .

EvilTwins · 19/02/2017 09:05

I hope so biscuits! I do think if it was a pre-requisite, then they would have just gone with people who could (and would have found out beforehand) Imaginary does sound fun - a bit like The Demon Headmaster Smile

Biscuitsneeded · 19/02/2017 09:28

Yes I think so too, about finding out in advance if the tap was completely crucial. It's amazing what can be taught, anyway. Time for a term and a half of tap lessons for anyone who gets cast this week and really needs it!

Biscuitsneeded · 19/02/2017 09:29

Think it sounds like the Demon Headmaster but also very moving and a rather biting indictment of current educational priorities!

Dancingdaughters · 19/02/2017 09:33

My DD seemed fairly happy with how it went yesterday. Doesn't sound like they were giving anything away. She does tap and said that went ok. She said her singing was ok. She is a very little nearly 15 year old and I think will struggle to look old enough for Jess or young enough for Alice. I hope we don't have to wait too long to hear either way as we have loads already happening on 1st April weekend.

Dancingdaughters · 19/02/2017 09:41

I think my DD was in the same session, Group E in the morning??

EvilTwins · 19/02/2017 09:46

My student was Group G.

EvilTwins · 19/02/2017 09:47

Apparently they saw over 1000 for first round auditions this year so getting to this stage is a pretty impressive achievement.

Dancingdaughters · 19/02/2017 09:58

Sounds like if they got to G yesterday and there's more today then they still recalled quite a lot?

EvilTwins · 19/02/2017 10:18

How many per group?

They're casting 5 shows, so I guess that's a fair few.

Dancingdaughters · 19/02/2017 10:27

DD said there was 29 in her group all for Imaginary but the same group went on to a honk recall in the afternoon. She was meant to be in that one but we couldn't stay. Apparently another girl we know who did honk in the morning, they had to do tap too.

EvilTwins · 19/02/2017 10:28

My student did Sunday in the morning I think. No tap for that one!

Dancingdaughters · 19/02/2017 10:36

Ahhh so not many groups doing imaginary?? I wonder how many they are looking for? My DD really wants that one now! But all good experience whether it's a yes or a no.

Dancingdaughters · 19/02/2017 10:39

Just out of interest anyone who has done it before, when the kids do a residential in Kent that then moves on to a week of shows somewhere else do we have to go down to move them or does NYMT move them?
