Hi, have just joined here so hope I am posting in the correct place. Just wondering if anyone here has a child auditioning for NYMT or similar groups this year.
My DD (age 11 ) is auditioning next sunday

Evil - the 4/4 to 6/4 and then back to 4/4 time signatures in "Move On" are pretty damned horrendous too. We are frantically counting beats in some kind of Sondheimesque nightmare. The youtube recordings are not true to the sheet music, which is deadly!

EvilTwins · 16/02/2017 08:57

The CD I have (Daniel Evans & Jenna Russell) is accurate. Just wish I could actually play the accompaniment. 6 sharps and my fingers won't move fast enough!

EvilTwins · 16/02/2017 09:04

There's only the one 4/4 6/4 4/4 change... I wouldn't stress about it too much - Sondheim is all about the acting...As long as she can count 1234 12345move after George has started "do" it'll be fine - they're not looking for perfection.

janinlondon · 16/02/2017 09:09

Evil - yes, I think she can do it intuitively............but she doesn't think so! Also in panic as teachers are all on half term, so only her hopeless mother to help. Its chaos I tell you! Will look for that Evans/Russell recording. Thanks!

Dancingdaughters · 16/02/2017 09:23

Lol. We aren't on half term here so my daughter won't have a lot of time to look at her bits. Cramming on the train tomorrow night I reckon!

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2017 10:25

DS2, not the theatrical one, has just told me he feels ill. Felt his forehead and he's really hot. It's probably too late to impose any effective quarantine, isn't it? They've been lying in top of each other in brotherly horseplay all week... am trying not to c atastrophise...

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2017 10:25

Where's Aplo gone?

EvilTwins · 16/02/2017 10:41

We're on half term too. Will none of your DD's teachers help anyway? I'm helping my student!

janinlondon · 16/02/2017 13:47

Evil - actually yes! We just had an email from the music master saying he can come into school to help her on Saturday. Which is above and beyond and I love him. Main problem was contacting them over half term.....

EvilTwins · 16/02/2017 14:08

Great! I did a few hours with my student yesterday and will see him again tomorrow. It's a lovely thing for the school so they ought to take an interest!

aplo · 16/02/2017 15:17

Wow I missed loads of chat here, ended up leaving my phone in a friends house last weekend and used it as an excuse to mostly stay offline this week.
Dd is a ball of stress at the moment as she is mid school show and playing one of the leads - it finishes tonight thankfully but it has been very full on. We are flying to London tomorrow so I'll use the travel time to go through stuff with her and I've managed to record tracks for Honk for her to rehearse with (and was so thankful that it's not Sondheim!)
My student is coming here in a while to go through her pieces too and as a surprise for Dd she is also going to see her show tonight so hopefully that will help with the stress levels!
Best of luck to all ds's and ds's and students!! This time next week we may even know the outcome!

Biscuits, what kind of ill is it looking to be? If its ENT related you could try prophylactic First Defence.....? Just a thought.....!

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2017 16:47

Thank you Jan. Son number 2 seems to have rallied. Am going to cross my fingers he fought off whatever it was without sharing. ..

minimits · 16/02/2017 22:34

Hi,
Hoping someone can help! DS has imaginary audition but now think I've told him the wrong options! Am so confused as he is 13-thought he could audition for Dr Google but in the audition breakdown it says optional for 15+. I emailed Jeremy but I think he misunderstood and just told me it was an adult role! (Meaning he's a grown up teacher...). Now worried he should have stuck with goole as Milo's song is far too high for him so he's doing it an octave lower which is prob all wrong. I feel like an awful inexperienced mother and ditto no teachers!

minimits · 16/02/2017 22:34

Goole not google!Grin

EvilTwins · 16/02/2017 22:50

For a 13 year old boy, the options looks like it's Oogie or Big Nelly (says female character but could be played by a male) Dr Goole is described as "male henchperson" so I guess it depends on how big your DS is.

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2017 22:58

Hmmmm. It does say Dr Goole is for 15+. I wouldn't go for Milo if he's 13 though, especially if he's having to sing it all down an octave. Milo is in the 11-12 list. Is it too late to go for Oogie or Big Nelly?

If it's too late to change, don't worry. They are such nice people. Your DS should just explain that he misunderstood and do Dr Goole anyway. It will still give an idea of his singing and they can always get him to read the scenes for another character anyway - they probably just need to hear them sing something.

minimits · 17/02/2017 07:50

That's all very reassuring-We've gone for Oogie and Big Nelly-the song for Oogie so Milo's song-hence it's so high! Nightmare for my DS! As you say I am sure they will be understanding-and hopefully realise that the older ones going for Oogie will have to drop an octave to make it through the song! Seems a bit odd they have to sing Milo's song but there you go!Tricky parts to audition for, DS is not keen on dame parts bless him, he had to be one at their end of panto run where they do a show for the adult cast and take their parts-he hid behind the wig for most of it. Good luck everyone! Guess it'll be coffe at Tate Britain!

Biscuitsneeded · 17/02/2017 09:54

Is he there tomorrow Minimits, or Sunday?

Just wanted to say BREAK A LEG to all the nervous DC. They're all very talented to have come this far, and if it doesn't happen for them this time they need to remember that! Aplo, wasn't it your daughter who met Emma Hatton who said she'd tried several times to get into NYMT?!!

aplo · 17/02/2017 10:08

Yes it was, last year (the night before the recall) we went to see wicked and went to the stage door afterwards and the girls told her why they were here and she told them that she had auditioned and never been successful - it obviously didn't hold her back!
Just at the airport waiting to board now, break legs to all over the weekend!!

minimits · 17/02/2017 10:25

We r tomorrow biscuitsneeded-how about everyone else? Am still so concerned he has to sing the song an octave lower but surely the 14/15 year olds will have to do the same if it's a song for 10-12 year olds? Argh!

Biscuitsneeded · 17/02/2017 10:42

I know another 13 year old boy who is struggling with the high notes. I wouldn't worry. At least he knows it!

EvilTwins · 17/02/2017 14:42

They've put that song in twice in two different keys which suggests they are expecting the older boys to sing it differently - I wouldn't worry!

I've just had another session with my student in preparation for tomorrow - Upgrade Time is now stuck in my head...

Break a leg everyone!

AlexanderHamilton · 17/02/2017 14:45

Dh came home last night & announced he was giving an emergency singing lesson to a student who has a recall for NYMT. Don't know exactly what for. They seemed to be practising a particular song.

minimits · 17/02/2017 16:50

Evil Twins where did u find the other version of all the fun? I can only find it in one key?
